Sonic the Hedgehog's first game is now 32 years old, but due to an earlier debut in another game, the speedy character himself is even older.

Sonic the Hedgehog has been a gaming icon for decades, with the Blue Blur making an automatic impact on the video game industry when his first game was released. This initial entry in the Sega series cemented many notable elements of the franchise going forward, and it's considered one of the greatest games ever made to this day. Despite the Sega Genesis title being the first true Sonic it wasn't the hero's debut.

Sonic's first appearance was actually in a now long-forgotten arcade racing game. It might seem like a fitting place for the king of speed, but Sonic's role in this other Sega title was minute at best. It also creates the conundrum in which the recent anniversary of 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog is preceded by Sonic's actual debut.

Really Interesting article to read about Sonics history.

Yep, fascinating origins. My favorite part of his origin is actually that of the famous winged logo. It was a fighter plane logo created for the original back story which involved a WWII pilot and a children's story. Sonic was intended to be a story within a story.
