Over the years, Sega has made three anniversary retrospective videos (the latest is from last year), each highlighting major games in the franchise. If we take these to be statements on what makes up the franchise's "main series", then the following list emerges...
-Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) [GEN]
-Sonic the Hedgehog 2 [GEN]
-Sonic the Hedgehog CD [GEN]
-Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles [GEN]
-Sonic 3D Blast [SAT/PC]
-Sonic R [SAT]
-Sonic Adventure [DC]
-Sonic Adventure 2 [DC]
-Sonic Heroes [PS2/GC/XB]
-Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) [X360]
-Sonic and the Secret Rings [Wii]
-Sonic Unleashed [X360/PS3]
-Sonic Colors [Wii]
-Sonic Generations [PC/X360/PS3]
-Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric [WU]*
-Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal [3DS]*
-Sonic Mania [PC/X1/PS4]**
-"Project Sonic 2017" [PC/X1/PS4]**
To my knowledge, this is the only time that there's been official word on what the core titles of the franchise have been. That said, it's a bit odd in places. Sonic R stands out like a sore thumb, and the inclusion of Secret Rings yet exclusion of Black Knight seems odd. Has anyone here seen any other lists like these from Sega?
*Actually, the most recent video only makes reference to "Sonic Boom" in 2014. Since these two games came out on the same day, I included both of them.
**The most recent video ends with a teasing comment about what comes next. Days later we got the reveal of Mania and Project 2017, so it was obviously hinting toward that.

what is considered to be part of the main series or not is kinda on & off, Because Amazon's little anniversary video, also contained Chaotix and the Advance trilogy which are not shown in Sega's videos, (Yes i know it's amazon, but Sega still approved.) plus you got the Rivals duology & Sonic 4 which Sega does consider part of the main series, and Black Knight gets shown off as well sometimes, so to me, this is the main games based on both current and past info from Sega & Sonic Team
These games to Me are the main games, the games that get the most references and nods in other games, with everything else being unimportant or straight up non canonical
