Pretty sure that layout is not present in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, so it's either a new stage for Mania (but not a special stage proper), or something from Blue Spheres.

That looks like the yellow super emerald stage. It even has 37 Blue Spheres to collect. The coloring is also different on this one.

So it does. The coloring is the main thing that threw me off, since the dark brown/yellow stage definitely doesn't start like that.

While Special Stages have definitely been confirmed to appear in Mania, Bonus Stages as of yet haven't. Maybe the Blue Spheres screenshot is a hint that Bonus Stages will be added to the game. (Worth noting that the casino Bonus Stage from Sonic 3&K is a re-purposed Sonic 1 Special Stage, after all.)

That or maybe it is a tease that Sonic 3&K Remastered may be happening after all, though that seems way less likely IMO.

...nah. Feels like a red-herring. Maybe Taxman was just playing with his & Stealth's 2014 3&K proof of concept.

The special stages in Mania should be a completely new concept. The bonus stages on the other hand..........I'd be down with blue spheres. Perhaps all 134,217,728 blue sphere stages will appear in Mania :V 

The starting position of the special stage in the tweet closest resembles the second special stage in S&K, but the floor color is different. The floor color is from the first special stage in Sonic 3.

Thinking about it again, the Blue Spheres could just be a separate game mode in main menu. Might have dozens of stages like S1+S&K. Might also have the improvements Taxman had fit S3K remastered. 

This imho would ROCK.

The special stage from S3&K eh...?

I imagine the music covered by Crush40 and each time you touch a blue sphere it makes an explosion, with Sonic letting out poor quality overlapping zingers from old audio files for that nostalgic touch.

Personally, I find them pretty redundant. The standard Chaos Emeralds are fine as is.

Thanks. I didn't know there would be a series of "new items" either. Interesting. Possibly there could be Super Sonic and some new form or mechanic like CD's time travel. I love the Super Emeralds, added more replay value to Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

No, the Sonic 3 remake isn't happening.

My guess is it's just a reminder about Sonic 3 being in the game and that info regarding the content from Sonic 3 is going to be a focus along with what we get from P17.

I actually prefer the S3&K designs over Mania so that would be a downgrade to me. It already sucks they went back to the Sonic 1 sprite design for the cute factor kicks.

Sonic 3 remastered please. Would love to have a really good modern version of the best Sonic game. I think the public could use a reminder of how good it was too.

JAPANESE Sonic, big thing right there. The west put their spin on him for a reason and Japan made the total Western switch in Sonic 3 because it worked so well compared to their "cute" Sonic.

I'm not saying it's completely bad to see Mania go back to the Sonic 1 design, but it DOES look weird for Mania to be a sequel to Sonic 3 and have Sonic looking like an even younger version of himself compared to Sonic 3, you don't age backwards. It's too much nostalgia pandering to the point you forget about continuity/consistence and its importance.

Not sure why they're so obsessed with having Japan's preference for a lighter colored Sonic either, it's overkill.

How is their choice in sprite style "pandering"? People love Sonic 3 too (at least in the fandom, I know Sonic 2 is apparently more popular in general). I also don't see how the Sonic 3 sprite looks older per se--I guess it's subjective, but it really does just seem like a different style altogether rather than an indication of the character aging. Kinda like the Adventure redesigns' original purpose pre-Generations.

Also I don't see how 3's sprite is any less cute than 1/2's, if anything he actually looks cuter, uhhhh

I agree with Celestia. I don't even think Sonic's sprites in Sonic 1 and 2 look "cuter" than Sonic 3, or that Sonic 3 Sonic looks "older". It's just a different style.

There's no visible aging going on here. Just style changes. Talks of continuity are irrelevant.
