Ryan Drummond Almost Returned

I usually try not to ever get involved with situations with voice acting in video gaming but I do wonder if his Sonic voice even is good after around eight years? Maybe that's why he did not get to be the voice again? Perhaps his voice for Sonic is not good anymore to others and SEGA and that's why someone else got the voice. I would think someone would lose that edge to a voice after years later.

Except Sega was apparently impressed and wowed by his performance when he tried out for colors.

I'm pretty sure that he does care about the series and his role as Eggman but had said several times that he's not a gamer. I don't see why that's a bad thing cause he don't play videogames.

Well... I've been trying to find out what Union Ryan is a member of since that would probably shed some light onto matters. Now, the thing with Unions, especially acting ones is that they can be very strange.

For instance. last time I looked, if you wanted to film a movie in America and you needed extras. Your first line of enquiory would be one of the various 'extras unions/guilds/agencies' etc

However... if you film in New York, you would go to the 'new york actors agency' (not sure if thats still the name of it). Whats the difference?

Well, it's a combination of money, time, availability and contracts.

For exmple. When I last looked into this, if you were with the 'extras guild/unions' you were treated as an extra. You could only work between certain hours, on certain days of the week, and you had to be paid a specific rate... typically, you got a lesser quality performer.

The Actors agency in New York however is different, it doesn't call it's extras 'extras' it calls them actors. Because of this, they can work any hours, be paid a reasonable rate, and be treated and have the same expectations as the star of the movie, typically a better performer... But they're doing roles which would still be classified as being extras. The only differnence is that one calls them actors, the other, extras.

Now with this, it sounds like Ryan is proably with a union that isn't willing to play ball with the people who want to hire him. Now I Couldn't find his 'union' but according to his website he's associated with several people. If we got the name of the union it might make confirming my theory a bit easier... but I suspect it's something like this.

Ryan is apart of a union which demands more than what the work is on offer. For instance, remember when we were calling Sonic's new voice actor 'Mr Alton' after the Alton Towers door sounds? And how stunned we all where at the difference when the game came out? Well... I think that for stuff like those few lines, Ryans Union would have wanted a lot more money and restricted hours than what another would have asked for. Don't forget, unions for performers want the best deal for themselves as well as performers.

So I think, Sega asked Ryan to leave his union, because it would mean that for future projects, be it games or appearances they would have asked for a rate/conditions which were not reasonable.

Another thing which I suspect factored into it... time... performers, depending on who they're signed up with, have very odd conditions on 'when' and how long they can work for.

Let me ask you... how many have stayed behind at work for say... oh 5-10 min just to finish something before the next day? Ever get paid for that? So why did you do it? With performers, it becomes ridiculous, due to the signed contracts and the union watching everything, charges would soon mount up stupidly. Heck, a recording could have over run by a few min and the union might have demanded nearly an extra days work.

So it really depends on how flexible the union could be.

Now... considering Sega asked for him to come back, it doesn't paint them out to be the bad guys which the interview suggests. Fact is they could have just sent out a job listing to agencies and gone through the applicants... but they didn't they asked him to audition along with Jason.

Yes. When they screw over passionate voice actors who worked there for years, we will respond like that. We also do spend hundreds on the series when you consider they dish out 3-4 games per year. We have a right to voice our opinion.

Whoa dude, I've never heard Mike say that about the franchise. In fact Eggman has become one of his favorite roles. The man has done more fan interviews than any other actor ever involved with the franchise.

Mike even attended Summer of Sonic a few years ago, and he wasn't even invited as a guest. That's sounds like someone who cares about the character to me.

I'll give my thoughts on the actual subject later.

Just a side note, but I hear the VA industry in Japan is even more brutal. All of those drama CDs, music CDs, live-action and stage gigs from them exist for a more blatant reason than just expanding their artistic horizons. Dig even deeper and you'll find VAs sometimes having completely different careers just to get to a livable income (I hear Junichi's actually done a stint as an English teacher), and who knows of those who have dropped out altogether because they couldn't even get their foot in the door, even after actual schooling for it. Unless you're Takehito Koyasu or someone like that who's ridiculously popular and can get a role just by showing up, I would think the market is more favorable elsewhere. xP

You can't not care about a franchise in any capacity and simultaneously fly to a different country to attend a fan convention of said franchise with no compensation involved. Cognitive dissonance of the highest order.
