Didn't we already have an argument over that checkpoint on the first few pages?

Okay, S-Ranked everything except Time Eater now. Uploaded a time for everything on Time Attack, too.

Does anyone know if there's a proper way to unlock missions that doesn't involve Streetpass or Play coins? I'm trying to avoid spending my play coins if possible, but I've done almost everything else and have only unlocked 14 missions. Slightly annoying if they force the Streetpass/ Play Coin stuff on you really. Not that it's too much of an issue, but not everyone brings their 3DS out with them (or lives in an area where they can get Streetpass hits). It'd feel fairer if there was a proper in-game means of unlocking them all. The ones I've unlocked so far feel like they turned up pretty much at random, to be honest.

Also, if the console version didn't confirm it for me enough... oh god, sorry, but I totally prefer the Modern gameplay now, personally. It feels like the difference between a rollercoaster and a merry-go-round, even moreso in the console version, but still. Not to say the Classic stages are bad by any means, but to go back to them after the Modern stages just makes them feel so pedestrian in comparison. The classic games were, and still are, brilliant, and the classic stages in Generations are generally great too, but the Modern gameplay feels much more intense and fun to me, when done right.

Put it this way, up until Generations, I'll admit that I sort of missed the Adventure gameplay a bit. Unleashed and Colours didn't quite cut it, but it really feels like they've nailed Modern Sonic gameplay in a way that 'works', now.

I will say that the 3DS stage design feels a little cheap in places though, especially in regard to shortcuts and faster, higher routes. Whereas in the HD version it's generally possible to reach these routes (just about) with quick reactions alone on a first try, with the 3DS stages you pretty much have to know a shortcut is there in advance in order to take it. Although I suppose that's a weakness of a purely side-on view, in that you can't see ahead very well. I think it'd have been nice if they used that 'panning slightly behind' diagonal camera view a bit more, personally. Would have certainly made it feel fairer.

Also, I do find it quite amusing how the 3DS version manages to have more 'accurate' Classic physics than the HD version, considering Dimps are behind this.

I'm disappointed that there aren't already checkpoint joke banners in people's signatures now. C'mon, people, this is hardly a step above the purple rock argument.

In any case, the surprisingly positive feedback on this game from people whose names I recognise has convinced me to give it a go. So good job, thread.

I will say though, that the stage design can feel like Jekyll and Hyde at times.

As most people know, the Classic Act 1 stages are pretty much direct carbon-copies of the Mega Drive originals, which is a little lazy (although at least it means the quality is the same as well and we don't get any nasty surprises). I actually find the Dreamcast-era stages to be some of the weaker ones, arguably because they're the only stages in the 3DS version that were originally 3D (seeing as Tropical Resort is much more heavily based on the DS stage rather than the Wii one).

Emerald Coast would actually be pretty enjoyable were it not for a couple of poorly-placed and generally outright lousy stage gimmicks that smash the level to a halt when you get to them (namely the weird cross-shaped platforms that alternate between horizontal and vertical, and the gusts of wind). Radical Highway on the other hand is probably the worst stage in the game by quite a bit, especially Classic. It's full of painfully slow stop-start platforming (which, let's face it, should be outright unforgivable in the Modern stages) and shortcuts made of disappearing Gold Beetles that you'll fail unless you homing spam. It also feels like it has a far greater number of bottomless pits compared to most stages. Then you get to things like Water Palace and Tropical Resort, which are generally quite good throughout.

I did find Casino Night Act 2 bordering on horrid, but it's a weird stage. Stay on the high route for the whole stage and it's pretty neat. Drop down to anything below that though, and you fall into a slow, bouncy hell of frustration that's a complete ragefest to try and speedrun/ time attack/ etc.

One thing that did bug me (notably in Radical Highway Act 1 and Water Palace Act 1) is that the stages sometimes have specific 'gimmicks'... the problem being that they're usually some kind of environmental structure that you have to stop and wait for. No matter how fast you're going, you have to stop and wait for a few seconds for the blimp to fly into place so you can bounce off of it, or wait for the giant robot to break the wall down so you can proceed. Maybe there are higher, faster ways past these bits, I don't know, but they're pretty frustrating, especially when you're going for a fast run.

But yeah, Time Eater is generally a better boss than on the HD version (although that's not very hard), with my only real frustration with it being how outright long-winded his attack pattern is. You spend more time waiting for an opening than anything else, but at least there's a lot more structure and logic to the fight than the mindless, vague boost-fest of the HD version.

I'd also border on saying I prefer the Metal Sonic fight in the 3DS version too, if only because it feels more true to the nature of the original. I think if it had actually been set in Stardust Speedway rather than Casino Night, I'd probably have preferred it.

Nobody's complaining about the stupid checkpoint. People are complaining about Dimps being lazy shits that don't deserve any money. The checkpoint does nothing but serve as a perfect example of this.

Putting something in = lazier than not putting something in?

I have this vision now of Dimps' designers sitting around a table and saying "The fans are always complaining about how our games aren't exactly the same as the classics - let's implement a policy for Generations 3DS of sticking as closely to the classics as possible!" The result on release day: Endless whining. And we accuse them of trolling...

In this case, yes. They got the original map from S&K and just copied it pieces for piece without making any relevant updates/adjustments.

Moving on from the best argument ever though, the true testament to the laziness of this game is the Classic levels fro EC through to TR. They completely lack the scale and style in layout presented in the first three stages, even though they have three classic layouts there for direct reference.

... Okay, that was actually somewhat humorous. Well done, I guess.

Anyway, do anyone else have any impressions to offer on the game? I mean, even with all the recent positive impressions, I'm still kinda on the fence as to whether or not I should purchase it..

Got the game on Friday - I've beaten the story and done a few missions, I'll post my full thoughts sometime later.

For now though, I have one question (probably a noobish one but I've not really been keeping track) - how do you unlock other designs for your profile card? I'm assuming it has something to do with the online multiplayer?

Nope, you only have the Sonic 1 design to start with no matter what game you choose.

There's an option for it but the only one unlocked at the beginning is Sonic 1. All the other designs need to be unlocked, I just haven't worked out how.

I just know that you unlock them by playing against other players in multiplayer, but I have no idea how it exactly works. But yeah, the multiplayer is the key.

Also I have a question. Is Multi-Player online or only if you're playing with someone near you?

Just went against somebody called "NiggerFaggot" is that even allowed?

So far I've got backgrounds of Sonic 1, Sonic adventure, adventure 2, Heroes, Rush, Riders, unleashed, sonic 4, and sonic colors. I guess they just come at random.
