  • SEGA Launches New 'Fast Friends Forever' Events Series [U]

    Update: A season of activities and content focusing on fans!

    SEGA has announced a series of special events as a “thank you” to the Sonic Community (hey, that’s you! That’s US!), launching with a brand video with the tagline ‘Fast Friends Forever’.

    UPDATE: A press release we just received from SEGA outlines this as a series of events that ”celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s amazing fans.” It will include a 15-part four-panel digital comic series created by fan artists starting August 9, TailsTube Season 2 and a special website. The Sonic Symphony World Tour is also being included as part of the “Fast Friends Forever” season.

    Some artwork of the event is included below. Original story continues underneath.

    The video, which you can see above, features the new Quartet of Sonic heroes - Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy - speeding around as a group of humans in the real world go about wearing their fandom in many different ways. Be that skateboarding with a Sonic deck, playing a round of Sonic 2 on Genesis or watching cartoons with friends and family.

    These kinds of ‘lifestyle’ videos are pretty common for big brands (even gaming ones), but it’s nice to see one that specifically tailored for Sonic the Hedgehog nerds like us. We particularly like the idea of a bunch of twenty-somethings having a Sonic Mania Adventures watch party - something that will absolutely never happen in real life, but we like to think happens in our imaginations.

    It’s also quite nice to see the video illustrate the broad audience that the Sonic brand now attracts - from kids to adults, sporty types to bookworms, and everyone in-between. It’s a nice piece of marketing, for sure, but we certainly feel the sentiment from SEGA with the accompanying social media message;

    Quote

    Sonic's brought us together with decades of adventures, speed, and friendship. From everyone at SEGA to everyone in the community, here's to being Fast Friends Forever!

    Thank you too, SEGA and Sonic Team!

    I know it's been repeated to death at this stage, but it's really interesting just how hard Sega is pushing Amy as being a top billing character on the level of Tails and Knuckles. She's always had her prevalence in spin offs and side projects, but between Origins Plus, Superstars, Frontiers, and being featured prominently in the Friends Forever logo, Sega seems quite committed to the bit. That's pretty much nothing but good news in my book, and I bet it does wonders for the series' broader appeal for young girls. Gone are the days of her being playable in like two sections of 06.

    Pretty nice, I must say. So cool.

    EDIT: For those who can’t use Twitter…

    Love that video where everyone comes together like family and friends playing the Sonic games and the friendship and relationship as well. When I watched that video to me It's about getting together with your friends and family.

    It's not really all that different to Boom, and it's earlier days as Sonic Synergy that featured the all of the quartet in its logo. For whatever reason, SEGA seem to be very keen to move beyond the idea of focusing squarely on Sonic. And I'm 100% on board with the concept of developing a core cast of main characters instead of just Sonic, Tutorial Tails and a band of cheerleaders. Let's hope they can do justice to the concept. Between Frontiers, Origins and Superstars, it seems like a pretty strong start.

    I concur! While she had a presence in old Classic art and ever since Adventure she fully became a supporting cast member, I always felt that she was perfect for the main cast and that she should replace Knuckles as the power member of Team Sonic, since she fits the role so well (despite being a speed character) and taking Knuckles away from being a guardian left his character in a state of decay and being directionless. While I do worry we may lose the qualities that made her unique, I'm happy for Amy.

    I remember from my childhood watching Sonic, playing his games, the first one I tried was Sonic 2, and until today I continue with Sonic, thanks Sega for your games and thanks Sonic for always teaching me Not to give up 😁
