  • Jun Senoue to Release Phantasy Star Rock Remix for Series 35th Anniversary

All part of the "Phantasy Star Remix" event taking place on PSO2.

The Phantasy Star RPG franchise will be celebrating its 35th anniversary later this year, and to mark the occasion SEGA will launch a "Phantasy Star Remix" special event for Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. As part of the festivities, a brand new remix made by Sonic series sound director Jun Senoue will be released on 11th October.

You can listen to a teaser below, from the game's social media account:

The "Phantasy Star Remix" event will see a number of other popular musicians remix songs from the game, along with new illustrations and gifts for players including free Music Discs and Creative Space posters designed by members of the PSO2:NGS community.

The Phantasy Star series has long been associated with the Sonic Team development studio - from Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka helping to program the first game on SEGA Master System to Dreamcast-era Sonic Team re-imagining the franchise with the groundbreaking 'Phantasy Star Online'. So, it makes sense that Senoue would be on board for some of the content celebrating this landmark anniversary.

If you've never played PSO2 and are just a little bit curious about the SEGA MMO, you can download the game in English on Xbox consoles and PC, as well as PlayStation 4. It's free-to-play, with a bunch of microtransactions that offer customisations and other features (such as Sonic series costumes and animations for your character).

The Phantasy Star Remix event will take place between 11th October - 21st November 2023.

Sadly I stopped playing after NGS came out, just couldn't quite get into it and starting all over again with a new loadout and currency and everything - gave it a good few hours but the open world stuff and new characters just weren't singing to me.  So just for my perspective it's a shame Jun is doing a song from the NGS half of PSO2 that doesn't mean too much to me!

Be great if any other familiar Sonic musicians are contributing (and if so, cover PSO2 Classic tracks for my sake lol).

I played NGS when it launched and dropped it a few months later... I do need to pick it back up again because I was interested in what the world was offering but there just wasn't a lot to do back then. Figured I'd wait until things got a bit more populated, maybe now it's time.

I did jump into classic PSO2 but only when the English version launched on Xbox, which meant that, although I enjoyed it, I was totally overwhelmed with a million different currencies and things to do... I do go back to it every now and then but I'm so confused by it all most days haha!

imma be real with you sega, this doesn't fix how bad ngs is
I've spent 2000 hours and 2 years in NGS, it's ass and it's not getting better.

As for the music itself, this is not Jun Senoue's first time on Phantasy Star, believe it or not. He's been a recording director for several PSO2 tracks, as well as providing guitars for a few other tracks in PSO2. And Gwiz who is collaborating with him used to be the NGS English social media manager, and... well, I'll just stop there.
