  • SEGA Wants Sonic to "Catch Up And Surpass Mario" - Out of Respect, Of Course

SEGA executive also wants Universal Studios Japan to make a Sonic themed area.

SEGA has been pretty vocal on its intentions to transform the Sonic the Hedgehog brand into a mega-franchise that's world-renowned (even more than it... kind of is already?), and despite some hit movies and a promising slate of video games, the company feels like there is more work yet to be done. More specifically, they've been unfavourably comparing themselves to Nintendo's legendary 'Super Mario' series and setting the moustachioed plumber as a benchmark.

In a corporate interview that just went live this week on the company's Japanese recruitment page (fed through Google Translate), Division Manager Osamu Ohashi expresses the lofty goal that SEGA still has for Sonic. That's to beat Mario at his own game.

"Simply put, I want [Sonic] to surpass Mario," Ohashi says. "Sonic is a game that was originally developed to compete with Mario, and it still hasn't achieved that goal. Our goal is to catch up and surpass Mario, because we respect Mario. I want people to play [Sonic] all over the world, including Japan - like Mario - and I want the movie to be a bigger hit than Mario."

Now, out of context (say, in a news story headline!) this might give off the kind of airs that suggest SEGA is looking to rumble with its former hardware rival like it's 1991 again. But if you take in everything Ohashi says, it's clear that this isn't specifically about beating Nintendo; it's about ensuring Sonic is as much of a beloved icon as his peers - and to be honest, given the blue blur's 30-year history, it's clear that the only competition the hedgehog has in the character franchise space is Mario and Pokemon. So we can kind of see his point.

Continuing with the Sonic-Mario comparison Ohashi also wishes that "[Universal Studios Japan creates] a "Sonic Area" as well" - a reference to the much-hyped 'Super Nintendo World Japan' that currently has residency at the theme park - that's our goal for those of us who love Sonic." What, SEGA Joypolis in Odaiba isn't enough?

However, it seems that the relatively positive responses that fans and critics have had to Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Superstars and the Sonic movies hasn't been quite enough for SEGA to start getting optimistic about things just yet. Hopefully they can have a good reason to be enthusiastic about the franchise in the near future.

For us though, you know what that means? We've all got to watch the Sonic 3 movie about ten times over to bump up the numbers!

To hell with that, I'm uterrly confident they'll never objectively surpass Mario.

Lol, it's nice to have dreams.

But seriously, Sonic Team has given us zero reason to believe they're currently capable of accomplishing that feat. We've heard this same thing about them wanting to improve the quality of the games countless times now, the only difference being the wording. Unless something truly drastic on a unprecedented scale happens at Sonic Team, we'll get another decent at best, half cooked game that has glimmers of brilliance under layers of jank. I want to be hopeful, but after decades of underwhelming products and fancy PR talk, I just can't take anything said at face value anymore.

Well I have no idea who GamerCage is, but I'd still say "never say never."

I once said they'd never make a Sonic 4. Hell, I once said they'll never go back to Classic Sonic. That was at least a decade ago on these forums--you'll be hard pressed to find it in my 17K posts, but I DID say those exact words when someone actually found an old post of mine years after they came about. You can imagine how shocked I was when that happened.

Far better to believe it when you see it than to say it'll never happen.

Yeah, this franchise has pulled out a lot of surprises over the years.  Like for example, nobody thought that the first Sonic movie would be successful. But now, here we are with a third Sonic movie coming our way!

Yeah, I think in order for this to happen, SEGA itself needs to improve as a company.

That whole statement just came off as something you'd say AFTER releasing a universally acclaimed game, or atleast after winning numerous game show awards. Not after you released two games that are just decent, and sometimes feel downright unfinished at points.

SEGA has published a new interview with Osamu Ohashi, Division Manager, and Sachiko Kawamura, General Manager of Design, in which they discuss the Sonic brand and its future. When asked how they want to grow the Sonic series in the future, he says that the character and games were created to compete with Mario, and they admit “they have yet to achieve that.” However, that goal has not gone away, and Mr. Ohashi says that the goal with the future of Sonic is to catch up to Mario and eventually surpass him. Here’s what was said, via DeepL.

How do you plan to grow Sonic in the future?

Ohashi.: To put it simply, I want to surpass Mario. Sonic was originally developed to compete with Mario, and we have yet to achieve that. Because we respect Mario, our goal is to catch up to and surpass him.

We want Sonic to be played all over the world, including Japan, just like Mario, and we want the movie to be a bigger hit than Mario. That is our goal as Sonic lovers.

I like competition like this It reminds me of Sega does what Nintendon't back In the 90's when you watch those commercials on TV back In the day.

even if they manage to pull that of, they'll probably fuck it up by not making it playable for everyone because of another shitty exclusivity deal or something, lol.

Nothing wrong with aiming high. Not the example I’d use but hey, whatever gives them that higher target to hit at some point in our lifetime… if the planets align.

As long as they don’t try and copy wholesale again

Sure, they could actually be able to pull off something like this...

    ...In their dreams!

It is honestly going to be hard with Sega being strict with their guidelines and all.

So, is Sega trying to restart the console wars between themselves and Nintendo without having a console of their own? I am kidding, of course!

But while Sonic has some good games, Mario still is miles ahead of Sonic, and speed alone won't be enough to catch up to the plumber boy.

Yeah, I guess as long as this encourages them to do better, then fine, although most of the gaming community has gotten over the whole Mario vs Sonic thing.

But, if I would to interview SEGA about this, I would ask:

"So, you want to beat Mario, right?  Well, then what were some mistakes that you made in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that caused the series to fall behind Mario?  Did you look into these mistakes and fix them and then made sure that you never made these mistakes ever again?  Because if you didn't fix any of the mistakes going on in the franchise, then you can't really beat Mario unless you fix these mistakes and never make these mistakes ever again."

Also, SEGA shouldn't be constantly comparing the Sonic franchise to Mario.  There's a reason why Sonic went toe to toe with Mario in the 90s because it was trying to be its own thing apart from Mario.  And there's a reason why the Mario franchise is well respected in the game community.  SEGA should just let the Sonic franchise be its own thing and allow the gaming community to like both Sonic and Mario at the same time for different reasons.

Well, when she stopped doing it, it accomplished something better. She's a lot closer to Sonic when she's not a rabid fangirl like she used to be casted as.

So there's a lesson in there.

...one of us isn't following the metaphor, I just don't know if you missed mine or I'm not getting yours.

I mentioned Amy because "look, X chasing after Y for 30 years apparently got tired and wasn't working. No wonder they stopped." Said Amy/Sonic, implied Sonic/Mario, I made fun of returning to loosing formula.

So your argument is... That X stopped the chase and grew from from that, becoming closer to Y by not trying to. Sooo, you agreeing with me?

IDK, am I too clever or to dumb?

Well, this won't be possible, unless you give the Sonic fans EXACTLY what they want: SA3(jk). BUT, what's true is that Sonic will not surpass Mario in  any way.

The responses to this are absolutely asinine. I am disappointed in this fandom.:absolutely:

Some of us have been here since ShTH-Sonic 06, and we’ve heard similar statements only for them to crash and burn (Sonic Boom). So it’s understandable that people are overly skeptical.

Not all of us are used to these statements after riding a small tide of actual good reception. We’re not in the dark ages anymore, but it’s not easy to overcome that skepticism when you’ve seen it before.

I still like to keep an open-mind with some healthy skepticism in the event I’m surprised or disappointed.
