Casino Streets Zone Trailer

This video shows something that somewhat bothers me about S4 design wise. There aren't really many feature shared between all the acts in one zone. Water only appears in LLZ1, the S-tunnels only appear in SHZ1 and the slot machines only appear in CSZ1. Act specific gimmicks are cool so there definitely no complaints there, but a few more zone specific ones (wheels and spinning tops in Marble Garden, pulleys in Mushroom Hill and fans in Starlight) would really make a difference. A few other gimmicks that are shared between acts would really aid level design.

Also Rush used the same sort of close-to-camera 3D effects. Sonic Rush 3 lolololololol (joking, by the way)

The more I look at that little clip the more I think that it was pre rendered as the exit for the trailer and that it's not actually part of the game. It just seems out of place.

Updates from RubyEclipse:

This is called an exclusive. Update Blog 2.0 will include the big Casino Street Act II change (this new level, by the way, makes me amazingly happy), and will also go into a bit more detail about how it works, among the other parts of the blog.

Soon, yes - it is exclusive to Joystiq for now so our updates will go live either tomorrow or very early next week, but probably tomorrow. :)

Damned exclusives

Really like the style this one's got. Looks like another platform heavy stage, always a nice bonus. As usual, it looks really fun to play.

It's these trailers that remind me that Sonic 4 will still end up being a very fun game, despite the amount of things it's being ripped apart for.

The cards gimmick looks cool. But I don't know why people complain about bottomless pits in Sonic games. It is the whole point of platforming -- Not falling off and dying.

Running on the twirling cards at the end looks really freakin' cool, but why does Sonic skip chunks of the level during that part?

Exactly, the reason why botomless pits were bad in the newer games like sonic rush and unleashed, is because they come out of nowhere while blazing at 3048209384 miles per hour or because whole stages were built around them.

I just read the preview and the guy was talking about how many times he died during a card flipping segment... did they really suspend them over bottomless pits?

Oh come on now. Bottomless pits are only crappy when you're running along at a speed area and you're thrown into one with no warning. This stupid idea that any and all bottomless pits in a Sonic game is bull. Platformers are made more exciting when there is danger and making it past a dangerous area feels very rewarding. The card jump segment is obviously meant to be a slower paced platforming area so if you fall it's because YOU messed up, not because you were running along and flew into one with no warning. Some pits are okay (Mario would be boring as fuck without them) and as long as they aren't cheaply located and everywhere then I'm okay with them.

Nuh-uh-uh. If it's you know here and there, there's no problem. That's what platformers are about. It's just that this game in general has more pits than it needs so I can only worry.

This game does not have an unusually high number of death pits and the ones it does have are easily avoided unless you suck.

Why do they insist on doing those crappy intros and outros? Seriously they terrible.

Indeed. It's gotten a little better though. Not as terrible a when the game was first revealed. Still needs to go though.

The game's looking quite good. I still have my gripes, but I can't see myself not buying it. I only wish they would have put up this kind of effort from the start, rather than having to get a huge backlash to wake them up.

It's got far more than there should be. It's like there aren't many places for you to fall onto a lower route, it usually just results in death. Can't prove it to you for obvious reasons.

I've seen the leaks and every pit I can remember was at an area where Sonic was supposed to take it slow and the player was supposed to be more careful. There were a few I remember near the end of a couple acts, I remember one when Sonic was rolling on the ball thing in LLZ, another near a gear wheel thing in MGZ, but I honestly don't remember any where Sonic was just running along and unfairly shot into one. We're allowed to talk about the leaks, why not tell me which pits you thought were unfair?

Everything in this post is true.

Also, does anybody know if Ruby hinted around about what else is going to be in the update tomorrow?

You know, I'm usually not a fan of "casino" levels, as they're usually generic and all seem the same to me. But I really like the look of Casino Street. And the cards are nice, too. It gives it a little originality, not to mention I'm a huge fan of playing-card-themed stuff.

And I REALLY hope this is the music for the zone. I know it probably isn't, but I really didn't like the original leaked music for any act of CSZ.

I'm wondering if things will ramp up after the full Casino Street update arrives. LLZ was a month ago, CSZ was today, however I can't see the MGZ update hitting in another month. Perhaps the MGZ announcement will hit in the first week of October via an exclusive at another gaming site, and with it will come a SEGA Blog entry announcing an October 20th release?

Listen, I'm not saying every bottomless pit is bad. It's just that a lot of them in this game come at unfair moments. Everything becomes touch and go for no real reason and I'm worried that it may (read: I'm not saying it will, cause we simply do not know yet) happen again on this level.

I really liked what I saw from the trailer, and the new card gimmick looks like a lot of fun.

As far as the music goes, I really hope this will be the music they use in the game. Though I've got a feeling that they'll use the music the was leaked to the public. My only concern with the music that was leaked was that it really didn't feel Casinoy to me.

Sonic Retro has put out a funny post about Ken Balough's statement in Joystiq's preview. I don't know what Ken was thinking when he said, because it just doesn't make any sense at all.

http://www.sonicretro.org/2010/09/breaking-ken-baloughs-p-r-license-revoked/#more-1131

I really like the guy, I just don't think that statement made any sense.

I keep my theory, Ken Balough is a robot, no human brain could make such statement.

Also, Ken Balough joined the SEGA forums, so if you want to troll him chat with him you know where to go.

Yeah, he handled things pretty well with the little Q&A there. Thanks to him joining the forums, we finally got 'wiiplayer' banned :D

I've posted some interesting posts Ken made there in two of my posts in Dusk the Wisp Keeper's topic -

Final-frickin'-ly! Wiiplayer was a royal pain in the ass in that forum. Now if only the other S4:E1-bashing trolls in the Sega Forums can be banned, that'd be better. :)

(I'd watch out for him, though. He's been banned twice previously under the handles sonic4321 and sonicadventurefan.)

I looked. Interesting to hear that news...

As for the trailer, LOVIN' it. The card-based platforming is definitely very interesting and creative. This zone looks to be a whole lotta fun. :D

That music is clearly not from the game. It's not 16-bit in the slightest, and would totally clash with the rest of the game's music.
