Game #3: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (16-Bit) for Sega Genesis, 100% Complete.

I remember receiving a birthday card from my parents with $5 in it to rent Sonic 3 from the Blockbuster Video store :) Simpler times. I think it was 1996.20240120_151727.thumb.jpg.78a5cafe68935f489278bf8e80e48048.jpg20240120_154819.thumb.jpg.ea4a01ed2b7d628d9f5f2f522cd53329.jpg20240120_162352.thumb.jpg.1f4947ecf41c29d206bea8405852203e.jpg20240120_162635.thumb.jpg.173649f20c329c0d4ff03a6a849b75ae.jpg20240120_162644.thumb.jpg.a88925c13503559ad04c4bf780f0e876.jpg

Sonic CD is one I've completed numerous times over the years but never really choose to go back to. It's been in my library since the humble bundle but I've had a fun time going through it again.

Hemmed and hawed over this for the better part of a week, since I wasn't sure if I'd end up having time this year to play/complete 52 separate games... but I figured, what the hell, I have a big backlog, sign me up.

(I apologise in advance for like 40% of what I play likely being Mega Man related.)

For week 2, I'm sticking with my rebooted 3ds. This time Sonic Rush Adventure. I really like this game...the levels are quick, boss fights fun...but the island exploration is a bit hit and miss.  Either way, a nice game to revisit and complete.

Game 1 of 52: NiGHTS into Dreams

Post 3

Elliot's level 3: Stick Canyon

I regret to inform you that I've lot interest in playing this so far, NiGHTS into Dreams is a game I've played a lot and it seems like time to pick up something else. Pizza Tower is up for consideration.

Stick Canyon is hard, it has long paths that can be tricky to navigate in time.

Check in for the week with games I started in 2023/2024 and where I am with them, if I can remember XD

Xbox

  • Dead Space (Remake) - Playing on Twitch on Tuesday evenings, currently Chapter 2
  • Fable Anniversary - Playing on Twitch Fridays
  • Turnip Boy Robs a Bank - One boss defeated
  • Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin
  • Like a Dragon: Ishin! - On Chapter 2
  • Hi-Fi Rush

PlayStation

  • Final Fantasy II
  • Final Fantasy XVI
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion - On Chapter 7
  • Judgment - On Chapter 2
  • Star Ocean: First Departure T
  • Ratchet & Clank: QForce
  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Nintendo Switch

  • Super Mario RPG

Nintendo DS/3DS

  • Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light - Started last night

From next week onwards, I'll only update on the games I've made progress on/new games started, so that I don't have to keep writing this list out every week - it'll take me ages!

EDIT: I'm also not entirely sure that this is a full list of games I'm playing - there's games that I started last year as part of one-off Twitch streams that I'm not sure whether I'll get back to or not so I've left them off - my backlog is horrendous!

Sonic CD 1993 (NTSC-J running in PAL mode, played using a MiSTer FPGA)

This time I decided to play the original Mega CD version for a change. I went the entire game without knowing that for some reason I was on the wrong region setting. Next week I would like to play something that does not involve Sonic, compact discs, or Metallic Madness. I do apologise about the varying size of the screenshots as the MiSTer has two different screenshot settings (one scaled and one not) and I used them interchangeably without realising.

I got the good ending by destroying all the teleporters, but I haven't done the Time Attack and did not find all of the Holograms. I also didn't get every Time Stone.

Game start

Game 2 of 52: Pizza Tower

First impression: I was finding this not that much fun to begin with, but I think I've come to the conclusion that, like NiGHTS, this is a game best played when you're racking up combos and aiming for the high score, the game won't really "make sense" if you're just trying to get through the levels. I get the feeling that moving through the levels and racking up combos is going to feel satisfying when I get in the flow of it.

This game's 90s artstyle and Peppino's anxious personality lend to the game's charm.

Game 2.- Hello, here again, we start the week with the check-in starting with my other favorite game from the classic saga, Sonic the hedgehog 2, I'm just going to start, wish me luck and I hope you have luck too, byeeee gamers ☺️

CHECK IN: WEEK 2

Gotta love having a long bus commutes. Gets these small titles out of the way. Now, let's open up the ol' All Stars pack, shall we?

GAME 7: SUPER MARIO BROS (SNES) 100% COMPLETE:

20240121_131954.jpg?ex=65bfd599&is=65ad6099&hm=0b713b1edd82921a76a5786d50593ce1025f81d7b62662bfa5daed298cdd1ff5&

I finished the original run a while back, but I never made it through this so-called "hard mode" route. I've never seen so many black shells in my life, and I don't wanna see any more. But now I can say with the utmost confidence, I have finally experienced all of the original Super Mario Bros. after all these years... Sure, it's the All-Stars version, but y'know what I mean.

So, what do I think? Is it worth all the hype?

It's Super friggin' Mario Bros. It's a simple, but super effective platformer that is just a joy. And with Warp Zones, it is just that more of a digestible experience that kills a few minutes of your time and thus won't overstay its welcome. I love it.

GAME 8: SUPER MARIO BROS. 2 (SNES) 100% COMPLETE:

20240121_132031.jpg?ex=65bfd59e&is=65ad609e&hm=568313abab50fea30bb5000c629e3fba36b924d58bbc783082d5c921d3493841&

(Excuse the vertical cam)

THIS game on the other hand? Hoo, boy. I don't like it. At all. The vegetable throwing is unreliable, the enemies are confusing to understand how the hitboxes work, some of the stages have absolutely awful puzzle design, and I have no idea how some levels would have been cleared with anyone other than Peach's almighty ability to fly long distances. She was the one thing keeping me sane through this ordeal of Birdo egg tossing and weed pulling.

I play this again, and I'll legitimately have a Doki Doki Panic Attack. So thank god a single playthrough is all you need to complete it.

GAME 9: SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 (SNES) 100% COMPLETE:

20240121_132020.jpg?ex=65bfd59b&is=65ad609b&hm=6686f6184210bbc3b0b59578aead8f76e1d97a786f3a6eae8ea54615aa80506a&

Now that's a palette cleanser. Maybe I'm a bit nostalgia blind cause the GBA port of this version was my first main series Mario platformer, but I adore this game. And I still do. Everything still holds up. So much polish, so many maps and each of them fun to play, Toad Houses were an amazing addition, and just the overall fantastic atmosphere, music and aesthetic, it's just my favorite.

GAME 10: SONIC ADVENTURE (PC)

20240115_200454.jpg?ex=65bfd5b1&is=65ad60b1&hm=5f4daef5c43955f9599ce5510b7e2df34306a6e0e2c8725886f49edbb80d09fc&

Now, my only exposure to Sonic Adventure was the Xbox 360 port of DX, which as you all know, is HARDLY the ideal Sonic Adventure experience. But with the advent of me owning a Steam Deck, it gave me the opportunity to experience the game in all of its original glory... and then some. So with a lot of modding, frustration, and cursing the fine fellows at Linux tutorials whose best advice can easily be summed up as "figure it out yourself, asshole", I got SA modded to what would make ol' TrackerTD proud.

And yeah, this is so much better. More responsive, more polished, it almost makes you forget about Big's fishing segments.

But other than him, I honestly still enjoy every other playstyle in this game. Even the other controversial ones like Amy and Gamma, I find a solid time with.

Will I go back for the full emblems? Maybe. Depends. But as of right now? I'm glad I got to Open My Heart to just this.

IN PROGRESS: Persona 5 Tactica is currently underway in terms of what I am playing on XBOX. On PlayStation, I am nearing completion of the current Fortnite Battle Pass, and Spider-Man 2, which is at the endgame. On PC, I am playing through Truxton which requires 5 playthroughs to consider completion. On Wii U, I am planning to play Skylanders Giants and getting the secret ending to Nightmare mode to qualify for completion.

GAMES FINISHED: 10

GAMES COMPLETED: 6

I've doled out the last week's Profile Gifts - just a little FAQ on this as it's not an immediate award and there is some level of work involved on your side to save the things into your account.

You should get a Notification informing you that you've been awarded a gift. Click the link to go to your Member's Shop Gifts section, and you should see the Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 profile gifts waiting for your action. You have three options:

  • Redeem: This saves the card to your account. This is what you will mostly want to do.
  • Send To: You can pass this card along to another member in the community.
  • Sell: You can get a Ring value back for trading off the card.

In order to actually get the card assigned to your account, you must click 'Redeem' for each item. Otherwise, you might accidentally sell the things for Rings instead and you're gonna have a Bad Time.

------

Status Update for me (things have been a bit slow, but I'm hoping to pick up the pace this week):

  • Murder By Numbers (Nintendo Switch): Final Case, should be done with it in the next day or so. Will likely 100% by the time I'm done with it.
  • Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (Xbox Series X): Started, halfway through campaign
  • Sonic Adventure DX (Xbox 360): Old save file, but never 100%'d - earned all 130 Emblems and am going to run through all Sonic stages (Challenges C, B and A) as Metal Sonic in order to earn every achievement in the game.
  • Club Nintendo Picross Plus (Nintendo 3DS): Started this mid-Dec, ploughing through all the puzzles on a nightly basis (Picross is a good wind-down game for me).
  • Judgment (PS4): For some bizarre reason it's taken me forever to actually complete this game! I'm going to make sure I do it this year for sure! Maybe then I can actually play the sequel.

Check in time!

So what am I playing?

Super Mario 64

another classic, I finished it about 25 years ago so it was about time to do it again.

I'm currently sitting at 70 stars and finished the final boss - I'm still not submitting yet since I want 120 Stars, this would be a first time for me.

Advance Wars 2

another game I never managed to  finish.

I tried the switch remakes but the originals look way better imho.

I'm currently about halfway done. Fun little game.

I would have to say no since it's a demo, and there's a full version available.

Death Squared Platinum https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/5876-death-squared/Rabid-Coot

Gets tricky in the later levels, feels like a rewind would help eliminate the tedium of repeating minutes of precise movements.

Progress made: Two Point Campus - Beat a few levels, like its predecessor this will be dipped in to over many monts/years.

Started: I Am Setsuna - Think I'm close to the end now hopefully should be done either tomorrow or wednesday.

Finished 4 Completed 4

Hey, looks like I finally have a game to submit for my own challenge, and it's a...unexpected one to say the least.

GAME 1 OF 52: FORTNITE: CHAPTER 5, SEASON 1 - 100% Completed.

20240122_231344.thumb.jpg.0374c4cb783a70019659fae713a07c56.jpg20240122_231348.thumb.jpg.d6cf9ca3ce6573aff8f750147e318800.jpg

As the full list of bonus rewards aren't out yet, I can't show it as completed, but Level 200 is enough to unlock the whole thing, so it counts as completion.

But yeah, I did not like Fortnite for many years. Frankly thought it was a mainstream overrated joke of a game. But with Season 1 of Chapter 5 coming with a theme that really spoke to me, and characters I really liked, and my friends had started playing it, I finally gave it a shot.

And I was very pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. There's a lot of reasons why its so well liked, and why its the king of its genre. Its grind is unbelievably reasonable, the cosmetics and battle pass is well valued compared to other games, and it's just plain fun when playing with friends. I can admit when I was wrong and I was wrong here.

You can read more about my detailed thoughts in my blog post here:

Other than that, I'm currently working on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi. The former took a bit to get going and really grab me, but I'm getting really into it now, and the latter honestly did not age particularly gracefully.

For the record, this counts as 100% completion, as getting the good ending is considered the completion reward, it's just the time stones and the generators/holograms are alternative means to achieve the same purpose.
