Hey, I'm grump!

*Finishes painting*

I'm not so grump!

I just finished fan art of the Game Grumps!

Now... I could explain why the Grumps are flying through the skies on their grump heads. I could explain why Mochi and Mimi are in their true forms. (lol) I could even explain what crazy turn of events inspired me to make this!

But I'm not going to! =D I thought it would be a cool and bizarre idea and went for it... Well, shit. Guess I sort of explain everything there. Also, I obviously like the Game Grumps.

Well now... This topic has been collecting dust hasn't it? Well then, Art academy... it's time to make like Altered Beast and RIIIIIIISE FRAHM YO GRAVB! Because to complete Art Academy experience is finally coming out on the Wii U with Art Academy: Atelier! June 26th! ... And only for the UK so far.

With an extensive range of art materials and tools to choose from, anyone can become an artist with easy-to-follow lessons that teach you how to draw and paint

21st May 2015 - From 26th June, with Art Academy: Atelier the Wii U GamePad transforms into an artist's canvas full of possibilities. The latest instalment in the popular educational software series offers 30 comprehensive lessons under the tutelage of a friendly master named Vince who takes you by the hand and offers information on concepts, theory and techniques. Artworks can be created from a wide variety of materials and tools, including charcoal for the first time in the series. The user can import and export images using an SD card, share their works via Miiverse, display them in a virtual in-game gallery and, in another first for the Art Academy series, upload time-lapse videos of their works being created to YouTube.

The Art Academy titles teach people drawing and painting skills on a touch screen that transfer to the real world - just follow the easy steps and create stunning masterpieces you might never have believed possible. Following the release of Wii U Download Software Art Academy: SketchPad - which offered budding artists a taster of the full experience - this new instalment offers a fully comprehensive drawing and painting package, with the stylus once again acting as your art material or tool and the Wii U GamePad touch screen as your canvas. By utilising the touch screen's large surface as well as the ability to zoom in on specific areas of the touch screen, you can create highly detailed works. Gain inspiration from some of the artworks already created and shared by some Wii U users in the Art Academy: SketchPad Community on Miiverse.

Art Academy: Atelier offers a fun and interactive course of study called Lessons Mode where you follow step-by-step tutorials to learn drawing and painting techniques. The techniques handed down from your master Vince are categorised into groups called Beginner, Advanced and - a new category for Art Academy: Atelier - Tools, with the Lessons in each category increasing in complexity as you progress. By completing Lessons, you will become familiar with the reasoning behind the techniques and learn more about the masters of the craft. Of course the software can also be used to draw or paint freely thanks to the wide variety of available materials and tools.

Whether you have created fun doodles, work-in-progress artworks or finished masterpieces, you can show off your creative process by uploading a time-lapse video of the creation of your artworks to YouTube. Whether you set it to one, two or five minutes in length, the time-lapse video shows the process of creation from the first brush stroke to the last. You can also save your creations to an SD card to view on a computer, as well as view your work in a virtual Gallery. The Gallery also includes the Family Wall, where all household members linked to the same Wii U console can contribute their artistic touch to the same canvas.

You can share your creations via Miiverse, Nintendo's network service that brings together like-minded communities from all over the world. Artwork created by others is sorted using predefined tags for easy searches and can be viewed without leaving the software. It can also be saved to the software or to an SD card for future use as a reference for your own work. What's more it's just a single button press away to access the Art Academy: Atelier Community online.

Art Academy: Atelier launches exclusively for Wii U on 26th June, offering a fun yet thorough course of study, a wide variety of materials from which to create, as well as multiple options for budding artists to share their works. Wii U owners who already purchased Art Academy: SketchPad from Nintendo eShop can upgrade to Art Academy: Atelier for a reduced price if they purchase it from Nintendo eShop.*

So with this expansion, not only will you be able to get the full Art academy package with lessons from Vince, much more art supplies to work with and an interactive gallery to hang your paintings in, but you can now post progress videos of your artwork on Youtube directly from your system.

And if you purchased Sketchpad, you WILL received a discount. Glad to see this finally underway... at least for the UK. Would really like to hear a NA launch date so I can get my hands on it.

Art Academy: Home Studio coming to NA  on June 25th!

Same game, different name! I've already took advantage of the pre-purchase and can't wait to get into it. No brainer that the Wii U is very comfortable for drawing as I had a ball with Sketchpad, but this update is what I need to get back into it and use it more often. Youtube videos, SD Card transfer, Vince's Lessons and more tools to work with really have me excited.

I imagine some people are irritated about this being eShop-only in NA, but this is the exact kind of game that benefits far more from being a digital release than it would a physical copy. Literally no advantage to having a disc

Well Art Academy: Home Studio is officially out! I've had a small amount of time to explore what it has to offer and there's definitely a lot of good here... and one gripe that bothers me.

It's definitely the most deluxe version of Art Academy yet, offering the lessons, free paint and gallery feature that became a franchise staple. It also utilizes the system like previous entries so you don't have to worry about the extreme restriction Sketchpad had. Plus the gallery is beautiful, is organized like a gorgeous living room, and you can walk in it FPS style.

A lot of love went into this thing and I haven't even painted anything yet or testing the Youtube or SD setup yet!

However, the only thing that bothers me with it so far is that Home Studio is treated more like it's own thing than an extra for Sketchpad. It has it's own app button in the menu and doesn't seem to be compatible with Sketchpad. So unless I'm missing something here... All of my paintings I made in Sketchpad are stuck in there. Which is a bummer. Hopefully Nintendo will look into this and actually do something about it. I'm at least glad I got my Sketchpad discount.

Anyway, I don't have the time to go deep in it now since I'm busy with other art stuff, but once time opens up, I'm going deep in this bad mamma jamma! And yes, I just typed "bad mamma jamma!". :U

So I, as some people already know, finally had some more time to use Art Academy: Home Studio. I've already created four pictures on it, uploaded them, posted on Miiverse and etc. Well let me just say this... If you have a Wii U and love to work on art... If you ever felt like you can improve your skills... If you were ever curious on how other tools work other than the ones you're familiar with, then for only 30 bucks (25 if you've already purchased Sketchpad like I did.) Home Studio -- or Atelier in the UK -- should be on your radar or already installed on your system.

If you think that Sketchpad had all Art Academy had to offer, than let me confirmed that you are indefinitely wrong. Art Academy, even at it's introduction as DSiware was way more than that. For starters, the lessons have returned and are in even more supply than ever. Not only are you given beginner and advanced lessons, but now you've have the option to learn how to properly used whatever artistic tools you desire, as well learn how famous artist used them and what exactly made their fine work so alluring. It really gives you a stronger idea of how to approach your work and how to tackle certain situations where certain techniques are more effective than others. And the best thing about the lessons is that you never feel pressured to do them all in one sitting. The game lets you learn at your own pace, but it's still up to you to commit if you want to see results. Also, the game's art tutor, Vince, is a really swell character. Just saying.

More mediums and tools are available. In Sketchpad, you had pencil, color pencils and pastels. Home Studio gives you those along with two more: charcoal and paint. They work exactly like you would expect them to; charcoal gives great detail but is messy, paint requires more forwarding thinking for diluting and blending. While I definitely have my preferences, every medium feels different from the other, and will required you to put time into them and master them to get the results you desire. And it's this that makes Art Academy great. It's a digital program that doesn't challenge you simply by having a ton of tools, but by testing you with how well you can utilize small amount of tools you have in a multitude of different ways. It tries it best to mimic working in traditional art than digital, and besides a few digital options, it comes pretty damn close to what it's going for. For example, Home Studio has an undo function, but it's limited to only undoing your last action. Otherwise, you better get familiar with using your eraser.

One thing that drove me crazy on Sketchpad was the limited space you had when it came to how many pictures you could make. It filled up very quickly and didn't have any option to make more room, so you had to delete them. This problem is gone in Home Studio, as it gives you the option to save not only on the system, but also in the SD Card until to ran out of space. And if you ever want to export your work so can put it on the internet...

HNI_0004.jpg

You can, indeed! No more pulling pictures from Miiverse! You can now display them in the resolution they were meant to be in! And hey, if you just want to present your work in a fancy presentation, you can mount your work in the Gallery and frame them for your and your family's eyes. The gallery in this game is best one yet simply from all the room you have, that you can walk in it FPS style, and how beautiful the scenery is. It's literally a home studio in a house and I wish it was my actual studio!

And hey, If you ever wanted to show a progress video on Youtube to show to others...

You can! And like Mario Kart 8, you can upload your videos straight from the game! You can set the length of the video, music, (Which is absolutely sublime!) the title of you're picture and etc. It will take a while to upload, but it's worth it to see for yourself how your picture came to be.

Home Studio has a lot going for it... but still does have a few omissions that makes me scratch my head. I still don't like it that's it's completely separate from Sketchpad with seems like no options to transfer paintings over. So those coming soon signs will stay there forever, I guess. Also, You can choose to display your pictures in portrait format in the gallery and in the Miiverse (in game) menu, but not anywhere else. So if a picture doesn't work as a landscape, you'll have to do some rotating on your computer outside of the game.

Still, for 30 bucks. you get a complete package that delivers in a lot of what it has to offer. It's extremely affordable for an art program and provides you with plenty of lessons and freedom to better your skills and show off what you can do. But of course, if you want results, it will ultimately be up to you to achieve it. And if you put in the time to take advantage of what it has to offer, you may just surprise yourself in how artistically gifted you truly are.
