What boggles my mind is that he hasn't jumped on the Red Star Rings for this.

Yeah, that was not really whining, just a personal ovservation. Stay calm:). Funny how one minor nitpick from me can make you all go mad.))) I'm clearly in the minority here with my views on this game, but come on! No need to go mad like that.

..the timer looking just like in Mario games still buggs me though. Not only because it looks exactly like that one but because there is no need for a timer in modern Sonic games, especially those counting time baclwards so you have to constantly look at it so you woun't die because it ran out.

God damn the amount of variety in this games levels so far is insane.  I don't think there's been any other Sonic game that's even come close to having this much variety.  So far we've had the Windy Hill stuff with day and night variants, a candy level, a honeycomb level, jungle levels, desert levels, snowy forest level, Amazonian ruin like levels and a casino level and we've barely scratched the surface of the levels so far.

Also, drawing attention to these two shots:

I wonder what the deal is with those white tokens.  Are they like unique sort of rings specifically for the casino levels?

Hmm, you seem to obtain some from hitting that Egg Pawn. Maybe they're something to do with whatever it is Eggman does to help Sonic? Like, you need to collect these and he can build things. Or something. This game is so different that it's hard to predict all the new stuff.

*edit after seeing a post on this page* Or they're based on poker chips and they're unique to this level, hadn't thought of that! haha

Oh, and I still think that the timer is a reference to the time limit in, you know, the Classic Sonic games. Now, if they made it ten minutes the reference would be complete, but still.

Sonic Lost World is actually a halucination after Sonic took some drugs following his 20th birthday party! We never did find out what was in those chilli dogs!

You know what else is suspicious?? During the whole of Sonic Generations the chili dog was in the sky, being cooled down by the time-frozen atmosphere!!! And when it comes back down and Sonic catches it? "still warm! time travel!!"

is it really time travel...? or is that warm tingling sensation your brain is telling you about actually the side effect of magic drugs?

Didn't the timer look like that in many Generations challenges anyway

I still don't see much of a reason to complain about that. Mario games didn't invent coins with stars in the centre, you'd be looking a long while to find who did, so they didn't cop Mario, more used a design choice for the coins here, which happen to look like ones used in Mario games, which happen to look like a lot of coins used elsewhere. It's no big deal, as it's nothing to complain about.

As for the timer, same goes. Mario games didn't invent the countdown. It's used everyday. It's a countdown. While sure I'd like to have infinite time to explore the location I'm given, this adds a sense of speed and rushing that some people felt the game lacked. And you've still got plenty of time, so I think it's fine. Also, the Classic Sonic games may not have had a countdown, but each level had a time limit of 10 minutes, I believe. It's a lot longer, sure, but it's a timer nonetheless.

I'm fairly certain Sonic Team as a whole is on something during the development of this game.

Whatever it is, I want them to take more. Unless it's super dangerous to their health. Stay safe, kids.

Is it what they were on during Sonic CD development too because that was great

especially the effect it had on the music

(quietly dreams for some Sonic CD remixes)

More than anything it's the way you expressed this so called "nitpick".  The whole "Oh my god, first X now Y" makes you come off as whiny.

The timer is very fair enough, plenty of people have the same complaint.  Heck I do as well.  But more because conceptually it's dumb rather than "it's like Mario".  What's the point in allowing "full control to the player" and making additional areas to explore if you're going to have a time limit on the stage anyway?

Have we seen the timer in any other gameplay videos as of yet?

It MIGHT have been there so people couldn't take advantage of the Demo and is changed In the final version, at least I hope anyway, not a big fan of having a timer like this on the game. But if it does it could increase replay ability, as I doubt you could explore the whole level on just one timer.

I'm seriously beginning to think the Casino will be my favorite level in the game.

Soooo......Holy Mother of GOD!! Well now that came out of nowhere! Like seriously the variety in this game is outstanding!

People on the internet: Dang Generations is so good. Wish we had a desert and a normal casino zone, not mini game, Maybe an Ice level as well.

Sonic Team: I heard people saying they want variety Iizuka-san!

Iizuka-san: Okay lets make a Casino level and  desert level. That will blow them away.....while you are at it make a honeycomb level, an ice level, a lava level, a Candy level, a forest level...oh mix some night levels as well.

Sonic Team: Got it!

Indeed, this game is turning into a masterpiece. No amount of "Oh look, Super Mario Galaxy rip-off" comments is gonna derail my hype for this game.

I'm so damn happy with the new levels.

Also, we're not getting basic shapes as geometry yaaaaaaaaaaaay.

Really digging all the level themes, hope game plays amazingly and hope they get rid of the totally unnecessary boost pads. It's the only bad comment I have about this game lawl.

Maybe Water level? <3 <3 <3

I just realised, we could possibly. get. a. 3D. Underwater. stage. omgggggg, I hope it happens.

They were leaked by a random guy on the TSS Network Facebook group.

First he leaked the 4 casino screenshots:

http://www.sonicstadium.org/2013/07/casino-night-inspired-zone-for-lost-world/

A couple of hours later, he said there are more screenshots.

A few hours later, he finally released the other screenshots:

http://www.sonicstadium.org/2013/07/sonic-lost-world-19-new-screenshots/

A few of us here asked him where he got them, but he just ignores the question and says something else. It's very suspicious, so we think he may have been naughty in obtaining them.

I see.....yeah that is suspicious...a lot actually.

In anycase thanks for answering Shadzter. Well now to wait and see if there are other images that will surface from SEGA.

And every night I lay awake and dream...

of higher resolutions!

The Egg Pawns here been redesigned to look more "chibi"/cute this time around. They look smaller in terms of size, have less limbs, have a more orange-based paint job, and more egg-shaped than older models.

For comparison's sake, here's a snapshot of this Heroes-era Egg Pawn from Generations:

Good lord, the Egg Pawns are even cuter than usual here. I'm gonna feel terrible about destroying them.

And while I haven't 100% loved every detail of the new art style, I adore the way Desert Ruins' actual, uh, desert ruins look. Something about that simple shading on the yellow and blue stone really comes together nicely.
