Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing

Oh, I'll mention one thing that has bothered me since the demo which I have to say is really poor design no matter what way I look at it.

The decision to have the lap number and position have the exact same font, layout, appearence and location. I really like how clean the UI is but I couldn't help but feel (and apologies for the comparison), that it was being different from Mario Kart for the sake of being different from Mario Kart.

After a while I will learn which one is which, but right now I have to look up and concentrate for half a second to work out which number is which. This is half a second too many to be considered a well-designed HUD.

Still having tons of fun with this game though. I'm glad I got PS3 and DS, they have different missions so twice the replayability. 8D

I usually like Eurogamer but that review was just pathetic.

Exactly, I usually find their reviews fair but that review was the worst review I've ever had the displeasure of reading so I'm really glad S0L went over there and kicked them square in the nuts :D

EDIT: Feb Ninty News from the UK Wii's Nintendo Channel in which ASR is featured.

I lol'd at the gameplay footage with the IGN watermark, surely Nintendo could get some gameplay footage from SEGA and some Wii footage at that

Just finished every cup on Beginner difficulty.

I must say that sadly, I'm finding franchise, stage and music variety to be a pretty big issue here. With characters from so many different franchises, it is a bit of a downer to have only six franchises represented as stages, and then within that, many of the stages being variations of the same original level. I'll understand perfectly if this is due to licensing issues, but otherwise I must say it's a bit baffling.

I mean, fair enough, all the Sonic stages are based on Sonic Heroes. Sonic Heroes isn't the only Sonic game in existance. >.> But! Even it were, Seaside Hill, Casino Park and Final Fortress weren't the only three stages in the game, either. >.>

Don't get me wrong, it's certainly not game-breaking by any means, but it does make the Sonic stages in particular lack variety in a visual sense, if nothing else.

In terms of music... well, I might be proven wrong by unlockables later on, but aside from the Sonic stages, there only seems to be a default 'franchise' theme that plays for the other themed stages. I only noticed one tune played in all of the Billy Hatcher stages, and in no case was it the actual level BGM of the stage being represented. D: Also, a slightly bigger irk, but the pre-race announcer mentioned Blizzard Castle... when I was playing Dino Mountain.

Again, I don't mean to sound harsh. None of these are game-breakers by far, but it does make the game seem a a little samey and lacking in variety when it could have had so much more.

Oh, I will say that I've had absolute hell getting my head around the Monkey Ball stages, though. X.x The JSR stages also seem a bit difficult to navigate at times due to crowded scenery, but again I think both these issues could be sorted with a proper map (hence I haven't had this problem on the DS version).

Had to post it. I've got no real beef with Eurogamer, or Dan, they're one of my favourite sites, I just felt a little shortchanged. After all, the comments section if for any comments :P

Weird how some chap who works in the Steel works wants to pop over for us to sign his copy of OutRun too!

Played a few games online, and I need to raise my game, had some really good races! Saw some familiar names too...

Well, I'm glad to say that I finally unlocked everything from the shop. It's a pretty impressive collection of stuff to mess with. I can finally practice on Monkey Target. Especially on that last stretch! :P

I should also try out the other characters besides Knuckles, Amigo and Bonanza Bros.(Although I'll stick to them as my mains.) I'm curious about the bikes and hovercraft characters, but never used them.

Oh yeah. Those were awesome. All were hectic and fast paced. :) Awesome job with AiAi btw.

On a side note: Can someone recommend me a good brand of X360 headsets? I'm using the original one and it's not really much to talk about. I couldn't understand everyone clearly.

After some pondering (and discovering to the dismay of my wallet that high street prices were not worth the wait) I sprung £34 on the X360 version (as first impressions and the demo were good enough that I thought "what the heck I'll give it a whirl"). I also rented the DS version out of curiosity.

DS version is very smooth in control scheme and a lot of fun even on your own, I appreciate the effort to cram in as many tracks as possible, the achievements and the Sega Store stuff + Unique challenges The only niggles I have about the DS version is that the tracks suffer a little from the toning down they had to take (but understand it had to happen). and the fact the tracks are generally midi instrumentals (but I guess thats due to space). I know the issues are mostly console limitations so its down to that but its pretty darn good. I notice the game is very good about preventing snaking,

The 360/HD version is absolutely STUNNING, the game looks gorgeous on my TV and I love all the little touches in the tracks. Theres lots going on but its just enough that you can take it all in without getting utterly lost. The all-stars are a laugh, I notice players and AI get them if they are stuck at the back. Which is nice as its certainly a good way to get the player back into the game but not quite so destructive that they destroy others chances completely (Mario Karts big problem with Blue Shells and Bullet Bills is that while losing players get them the effect they have throws the victim sky high with VERY low chance of dodging). Certainly the closest I've seen anyone get to Mario Karts crown in a while

Only thing is I glitched out the loops in the casino levels a few times as Big. but falls dont really hurt the gameplay much

In any case I'm VERY pleased with both. It's good to see a Sonic game with more good than bad again! (even if its more a sega racer)

The Jet Set Radio tracks are probably my favorite tracks in this game. They're absolutely stunning and groovy.

And I've also come to not minding the announcer. Holy hell.

Ran into a trophy problem.

My brother and I used every characters All Star moves to attack the opponents, yet we still didn't receive the "Fighters Megamix" trophy. I went to the Trophy List on the game itself, and it says that I've used 20/20 of the All Star moves and should have the trophy. But I don't.

Not really a trophy whore, actually I've only Plat'd 2 games (so far). but nothing's worse than having earned a trophy and still not getting it. Hope this gets addressed.

EDIT: Nevermind. It updated when I got my next trophy. B)

Man I love this game :D

but has anybody gotten full AAA on all the Missions yet? The Bonanza Bros one where you have to collect point circles Is giving me a hard time. Same with Sonic Saves the day, I can only score AA T_T

I've got them all!

For the Bonanza Bros one you don't need to collect ALL of them, but the ones in midair are essential as they are worth more points. The ones to the sides of the side ramps are the ones you don't need. If you take a sort of figure 8 route you should be able to get the ones you need. It's difficult to describe but you should be able to figure it out.

On the Sonic one, you may notice that the weapon pickups aren't random and they also don't respawn. What you need is the triple boxing glove ones. They are located in the middle of the arena and the far corners. With all of these you should be able to take down the robot in time. And also, don't hold the fire button with them, just press it 3 times quickly. And remember, to get AAA you must not lose any of your lives.

I raced a couple with you and some other people from here (I suspect, I know Yoshi was there and SonikkuCreed.) I'm extremely happy that I can now say I beat the executive producer... as Big the Cat! :P I'd like to say Big was my favourite character to race as (simply because he's the most ridiculous) but seriously, I've not had a problem with any of them. XD The first come first serve character selection hasn't been a problem for me at all either, it works kinda well actually. Everyone's switching about characters a lot too, which is great!

Also S0L, I accidentally joined your party while attempting to join your game. =X I thought they were the same thing... apparently not.

Yes, good point.

A level based on a stage from Sonic and the Secret Rings (Evil Foundry comes to mind!) would've been really good (not sure what the restrictions were, though). And I'm sure many would've jumped for joy had there been a Sonic R-inspired course.

But continuing with your Heroes line of thought: A stage based on Frog Forest, Grand Metropolis (one of my favourites), or even Hang Castle might have been nice. Actually even with Final Fortress, an Egg Fleet-esque stage during the day would've been cool. Personally, I think there's one too many tech/mech-based Sonic stages and even in that respect, the game would've benefited from more variety. In fact, three levels of HotD seems a bit much to me (Sewers and the rooftop one would've sufficed).

Again, depends on what the restrictions were that Sumo had to work with. Don't get me wrong though, just minor suggestions. I'm dying to get the game. :)

Go take a look on Sonic Retro, where on one hand they're complaining the PC doesn't have online, and a few posts later they're linking to Wii ISO's and DS Roms. That's why you don't have online on the PC.

Hey, asshole--before you try and use our site as some sort of justification for your arrogant developmental choices, how about you consider the fact that somebody posted that shit when the admins weren't online? We removed the links, and we absolutely don't endorse the spread of pirated games like that. Try being a bit considerate before you try and make an example out of us.

Yeah I noticed that with Sonic, though only the middle one is triple boxing gloves the others are one, So I just stay there? I also found that boosting towards him does damage.

The Bonanza Bros one do you mean the jumps at the side? left and Right ones with the 50 and 10?

If only someone made a YT vid on them :(

For what it's worth, as soon as the staff saw those links we tore them down. I pre-ordered ASR on PS3, and don't approve of the pirating of it by those too lazy/cheap to go out and buy it or use an online shop - don't tarnish all of us because of one or two idiot's actions, please. :)

Not having online makes people pirate a game more. There's no reason to care if it has no online as you get the full experience by just pirating it. With online on the other hand, you need to buy it if you want to actually play it. Good job fucking yourself out of thousands of dollars.

No, I meant in the very far corners of the level (not in the middle area).

Yeah I meant the jumps at the side. Go for the 50 and ignore the 10.

So just one cup away from finishing the advanced grand prix. Here I come Monkey Cup.

Anyone have 360/PS3 footage of Ocean Ruin? Love being in that underwater tunnel and wonder how it looks on the HD twins. I appreciate it. :D

S0L's been standing up for himself and the guys at Sumo Digital in the comments section of the 6/10 Eurogamer review -

Had to point this out:

Nearly two decades on, I could probably still draw a map of Koopa Beach or Choco Island's sublime simplicity from memory, yet mere minutes after putting down the joypad on Sonic's effort and I can barely distinguish one overly busy course from another.

No shit? I don't understand his logic in comparing his ability to distinguish a simple track from a game he's played for 20 years to a complex track from a game he's played just recently.

And by this time, can we just bury the hatchet and just make the kart racer it's own sub genre already? Cause at this point saying a cartoon mascot racer is a ripoff of Mario Kart holds as much wait as saying it comes in a box.

And I find it odd how he says multiple times that the game is taken straight from Mario Kart with all the things inspired by it, yet for the drifting mechanics, aka, something DIFFERENT from Mario Kart, he says that they don't "necessarily fit into the specific niche of kart racing".

So when it's similar it's a ripoff, yet when it's different it doesn't fit into the genre?

:o

Sumo, S0L, as much as I love ya, I will NEVER forgive you for not having custom soundtracks in the PS3 version. TT_TT
