Sonic 2 = Overrated

Two other things:

One, it's three acts. Why you would need a third Act when the others had two? Kind of unnecessary.

Umm, are you for real? If anything id call Sonic 3 and Knuckles "overrated" if I didnt know how over used such a term has become.

Based on what ive seen it's treated as the black sheep of he classics, yet I have no idea why. Its my personal favorite Sonic game, so I guess thats just me seeing this.

Sonic 2 isn't my favorite of the "fabulous five," but I'd be lying if I didn't boot it up a lot just to power from Emerald Hill to Casino Night over and over again.

Hill Top is where I kind of stop getting interested, but at any rate, the game isn't overrated. It's a fantastic entry into the series and is one of the best.

Wait really? This is the 1st time I've ever heard of anyone saying S2 was overrated. If anything colours is beyond overrated.

And black sheep? What is this? I don't know where YOU usually see this as the case, but everywhere I've seen INCLUDING HERE has stated Sonic 2 as being the best classic Sonic of them all. I never hear people talk about Sonic 3 as much as they do Sonic 2.

What is it that S3&K has that S2 doesn't that is so important that buttloads of Sonic games that doesn't play anything at all like S3&K rank between the two?

Sonic 2 is like, a huge step into my venture into the Sonic craze, in my toddler years, my cousin had Sega Smash Pack, and I'd play Sonic 2 as good as I could. (I was playing that over his apartment from 3-5!) I remember him watching me play Chemical Plant and always die because of those stupid rotating platforms and the rising water. The music has been etched in my head for years, and it still is one of my favorite Sonic tracks. Every time I play it, I get a nostalgia rush.

...Except when I got to Casino Night. Then the game gets really boring, the levels just don't feel like I can just pick up and play 'em like the earlier parts of the game did. The level design also didn't feel as fun. This is also where the enemy placement pisses me off.

Basically, I have strong nostalgia for the first half of the game, and while I'm older now, I still love the first half, the second half puts me off.

Sonic 2's first half is my favorite Sonic moment to just have fun with, though. S3&K just holds up better later on in the game.

Again, what? Are you site we're on the same site? Because everywhere I go, I see people placing S3&K as their favorite Sonic game and Sonic 2 is mostly on the backburnner when it comes to favoritism (as this thread conviently shows)

You know what, this is what really makes threads like this fall apart. Everyone has different experiences so unless the game in question has a wide spread reputation, you're rarely gonna find people agreeing on the same sentiment. Like reading baston's description that people who consider S3&K the best also place S2 far below it and wondering 'where the hell is he finding THIS kind of reaction?'

Speaking of baston:

What is it that S3&K has that S2 doesn't that is so important that buttloads of Sonic games that doesn't play anything at all like S3&K rank between the two?

Elemental shields, flying Tails, Knuckles, Super Emeralds, Elemental shields, Hydrocity, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuGiQZG0meI, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55rtX4wCJPM, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5PzRWEeKiU, and everything from Lava Reef onward.... oh and elemental shields.

Anyone else feel it's severely overrated? I can understand it because of Nostalgia and all that, but really, it wasn't that brilliant. Sonic 3 + K is better in almost every way, and the Adventure titles were better too in my opinion. I did love Chemical Plant and Casino Night, but then I loved Lava Reef, Sky Sanctuary, Ice Cap (Sonic 3 one), practically all the action stages of the Adventure titles, some of Heroes' (dare I say it...) and Unleashed's day time stages. Sonic 2 just can't compare. Also, what really annoys me is when 'Sonic fans' said/say 'the last good Sonic game was Sonic 2'. What the hell? That means you only like two games in the series. It's not really fair to call these people fans, and Sonic Team should not bother trying to please THEM.

If I was like the more whiny, obnoxious Sonic fans, I would be posting a thirty page essay about why I can't possibly agree with the notion of Sonic Adventure 2 or (especially) Sonic Heroes being better then Sonic 2. After all, Sonic 2 has brilliant level design, brilliant music, and brilliant gameplay. Only 1/3rd of Adventure 2 could even be considered to be brilliant, and Sonic Heroes...no. Just no. It's like comparing a dry, crusty, stale piece of fruit cake made by the senile old cat-lady down the street to a freshly baked chocolate cake from your all-time favorite bakery. Heroes the fruit cake has absolutely no business competing.

  • More expansive and longer levels, without being too long
  • Multiple characters with special moves
  • Multi-tiered level design which takes advantage of each character's unique abilities and quirks
  • Sky Sanctuary Zone
  • More bonus levels
  • A tangible plot and animated cutscenes that made the game flow seamlessly from one level to another
  • Hydrocity Zone
  • Mini-bosses that give the game a unique pacing over the previous installments
  • Ice Cap Zone
  • Michael Freaking Jackson worked on the music
  • Lock-on technology to plug Sonic 3 & Knuckles together, play as Knuckles in Sonic 2, and unlock hundreds of levels of the addicting Special Stages
  • Death Egg Zone
  • More power ups (in the form of elemental shields that affect platforming and the environment)
  • Launch Base Zone

It improves on Sonic 2 in many ways.

Sonic 2 is a great game. It's an improvement over the original in almost every respect, despite some wonky enemy placement and terrible special stages, and it also holds a sort of special place in my heart as possibly the first video game I ever played (the multiplayer as Tails for about five minutes, and I got my ass kicked. Still blew my mind). It isn't my favourite of the classics, though; S3&K is an even bigger improvement over S2 than it was over S1 for more reasons than I can list, and CD... well, CD just oozes so much atmosphere that I'm willing to forgive most of its shortcomings because I'm shallow.

As for the "overrated" question, I really don't think so. Sonic 2's hardly been brought up at all recently, at least as far as I can remember. I can think of more instances of people mentioning the Game Gear version than the Genesis version over the past couple of months, even. It's weird.

I don't think Sonic 2 is overrated.

I don't think Sonic 3&K is overrated either though, and some of you know how much bile I have towards that, Sonic 3 in particular.

Sonic 2 is an amazing game. Yeah some of the enemies in Metropolis can be annoying, but they're meant to be. You really feel like Robotnik isn't kidding when he throws all his shit at you unexpectedly. Then when you memorize all the positions of the Slicers and Shellcrackers (Asteron is really easy to dodge) you can dodge them and look really badass. It's possible to dodge every one with enough practice.

Sonic CD has a cool atmosphere but the level design isn't as enjoyable to me as it was in Sonic 2.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles IMO has the best atmosphere, level design, everything. Fuck I love that game.

EDIT: I've been listening to the demo versions of the Sonic 1 & 2 tracks recently and it's made me love 1 & 2 even more. Masato Nakamura, you legend.

Why should I care what the meta "reasoning" is for poor level design?

Maybe I need to check my eyes but everytime someone talks about their favorite Classic Sonic game, it's Sonic 2. Everytime someone talks about their favorite Dreamcast-Gamecube era game, it's Sonic Adventure 2. Everytime someone talks about their favorite modern game, it's Unleashed (besides Generation of course). I don't think Colors as a game is overrated but the story is a REALLY overrated. Everytime someone says they don't like it, they are called haters of lighthearted stories. I see a lot more people saying Colors brought the series back, then I see people saying, I don't really like the game.

Sonic is all about memorizing the level layouts and improving your time. There's some exploration too but there's a reason why you get the largest amount of score based on your time. Remembering where the enemies are and bopping them strategically is also part of the fun. I've seen many playthroughs where people don't utilize the Spin Dash Jump, which helps you avoid a lot of the enemies that people complain about.

I think Sonic 2 is the most critically acclaimed of the 2D Sonic games, but in terms of how often it is talked? It is sorely missing from a lot of conversations. A good many people go on about Sonic 3 or Sonic 1, thinking about how they were some of the greatest Sonic games, but Sonic 2 is always missing. Don't get me started on how often SEGA uses the music. I've heard Green Hill more times than I've ever Emerald or Angel Island.
