Sonic Generations Plummets in This Week’s UK Sales Chart

It seems Sonic’s 20th Anniversary game Sonic Generations just can’t compete with the many other big name titles released this month. In the top 40 All Formats chart this week, Sonic Generations plummeted from No.21 to No.37, down 16 spots from last week, while in the top 40 Individual Formats chart, the game is nowhere to be found. New Sonic Generations Japanese Trailer & 150 3DS Screenshots

SEGA Japan has released a new trailer which gives a look at some gameplay footage from the console and 3DS versions of Sonic Generations to promote the game’s release over there in a couple of weeks. SEGA Japan and SEGA Europe have also together released one hundred and fifty new screenshots of the 3DS version, which showcase all seven stages in the game, as well as the game’s multiplayer mode. You can view all of the images in our gallery below.

New Sonic Generations Planet Wisp Screenshots

The console and PC download version of Sonic Generations may have already been out for a few weeks now, but SEGA’s not done showing it off just yet. The publisher has released forty new screenshots of the game’s Planet Wisp stage in both Classic and Modern flavours, and in them we can see Classic Sonic using the Pink ‘Spike’ Wisp and Modern Sonic using the Orange ‘Rocket’ Wisp. You can view all of the images in our gallery below.

Sonic Generations Drops in the UK Chart

Despite a full week of sales last week, Sonic Generations has dropped in the UK charts. In the top 40 All Formats chart, the game dropped eleven places from No.10 to No.21. In the Individual Units chart, the Xbox 360 version has plummeted from No.14 to No.32 and the PS3 version dropped from No.21 to No.37. In the top 40 Xbox 360 chart, Sonic Generations fell six places from No.6 to No.12, while in the top 30 PS3 chart, the game dropped just three places from No.6 to No.9.

With big titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception released last week and more heavy hitters to come, Sonic Generations may find itself struggle to grab sales. We’ll update you next Monday with this week’s sales chart results for Sonic Generations and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, which is released this Friday on Wii in Europe.

TSS Review: Sonic Generations

The following review had the potential to be the most pointless thing I’ve ever written. Normally, a review is to help you decide whether or not to buy the game, but let’s be real here; if you’re at The Sonic Stadium, you’ve bought the game. You more than likely love the game. That being the case, I’m going to be more thorough than your typical TSS review, like how I review on Sonic Retro.

SEGA Releases Artwork for Sonic Generations’ Bosses

It seems SEGA’s not done dishing out assets for the console and PC version of Sonic Generations, despite the game already being out on those platforms. The publisher has today released artwork for three of the game’s bosses, namely the Death Egg Robot, Perfect Chaos and Egg Dragoon. You can view them all in our gallery below.

UK Chart: Sonic Generations Just Barely Makes the Top 10

Last week’s UK chart results are in and Sonic’s big 20th Anniversary title Sonic Generations has just barely managed to make it into the top 10 All Formats chart at the number 10 spot, which isn’t bad for just two days of sales. SEGA Re-opens Sonic Generations Website

In a very odd move, SEGA has re-opened its Sonic Generations website today, which, as you know, is the day of the console version’s release in the US, making that half of the website at least, redundant. Even weirder is the fact that nothing has been added to it since we last saw it about a month ago, apart from the recent trailers. Stages for both the console/PC and 3DS versions are still locked out, despite the console version’s release and almost all of the 3DS version’s levels already being revealed.

You can find the site at this link.

GAME Group “Put Off” By Sonic Generations Collector’s Edition’s RRP

UK Sonic fans interested in the Sonic Generations Collector’s Edition may wonder why this set of items hasn’t been made available with retailers in the GAME Group (GAME, GameStation and Gameplay) who usually always stock these kinds of things across a variety of game genres. Well, The Sonic Stadium can reveal that the problem is the Collector’s Edition’s £99.99 RRP.

A GameStation staff member spoke to this reporter in a local store this afternoon and stated that, like myself, he was puzzled as to why they weren’t stocking this edition of the game. He then told me he had previously contacted head office to enquire about this and was informed that the GAME Group isn’t stocking the Collector’s Edition because they were “put off” by its £99.99 RRP (Recommended Retail Price).

We then talked about the rival retailers who have stocked it, such as Amazon and ShopTo. I told the GameStation staff member how even the more obscure of online retailers like 365games.co.uk and PropelGamer.co.uk have sold out of pre-orders for it (the latter at an inflated £149.99), to which he disappointedly replied “I guess we missed a trick there.” Indeed.

SEGA France has unveiled all of their Paris Games Week offerings via The Blue Room (their blog). The creator of the Yakuza and Super Monkey Ball franchises Toshihiro Nagoshi will also be there to give the first public presentation outside of Japan for his latest game Binary Domain and Sonic fans will get their first public demonstration of a new stage from Sonic Generations by Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka. As we’ve seen all of the game’s stages in trailers, this stage won’t be completely “new”, but there are still four stages we’ve not seen very much of, like Speed Highway, Crisis City, Rooftop Run and Planet Wisp, so it will likely be one of those stages.

Here’s the full schedule for the presentations and autograph sessions below:

Saturday 10:15: Presentation of a new level of Sonic Generations
Saturday 10:45: Autograph session of Iizuka san to Space Dedications

Saturday 16h30: Presentation of Binary Domain Conference Room

SEGA Confirms Second Sonic Generations Demo For October 18th

UPDATE: It appears SEGA made a mistake with the earlier date for Xbox Live and EU PSN users. In an update at the SEGA blog and the SEGA Twitter feed, community manager Clumsyorchid says the demo will release tomorrow, not Wednesday.

SEGA of America has revealed via the SEGA Blog that US PS3 fans will get the demo October 25th. The publisher has also re-affirmed a late November release for the Nintendo 3DS version and the retail version of the PC version.

Check out the press release below.

Sonic Generations Preview Round-up, More Info & Gameplay Footage

It appears SEGA’s embargo that IGN mentioned before has now lifted, as gaming websites SPOnG, CVG, Videogamer.com and GamesRadar have all just unleashed new previews of a near-final build of Sonic Generations, which give us some new nuggets of information. CVG has also provided new gameplay footage of Classic Sonic’s Sky Sanctuary Zone stage.

SPOnG’s preview is written by this website’s very own Svend Joscelyne/Dreadknux and tells us more about the game’s missions. Two new Speed Highway screenshots are also included.

Inbetween these stages, you’ll get the opportunity to play optional missions. There are five missions for both Classic and Modern Sonic in each zone, and will mix up the core stage in some form. Other characters will take an active role in helping you out, but for now we only know of Tails’ involvement in these levels. A mission called ‘Way Past Fast’ sees you race against the Tornado plane, piloted by the two-tailed fox

Other missions include Doppelganger races, against another Sonic, and a mission called ‘Look Out Below’ which challenges you to complete a remixed Green Hill Zone stage with breakable platforms. In each of these, the main elements of the core stage remains the same, but enemy placements will change and you may even explore completely different looking areas than you would in the main level

In Videogamer.com’s preview, there is an example of what part Sonic’s friends play in gameplay:

You don’t actually play as, say, Knuckles, but in one mission you can take advantage of the red echidna’s fists, where a tap of the button sends him burrowing into the ground for rings. As well as this there are time attacks, high speed challenges and doppelgänger races, which has you racing against the ‘other’ Sonic. Considering modern Sonic has homing attacks and the such, the odds are always stacked against his older, squatter counterpart – which is half the fun.

GamesRadar gives a bit more information about the opening of the game’s story:

The game’s plot is told through deliciously self-referential cut-scenes. Sonic eats chilli dogs while holding Amy at arms length literally with his whole hand over her face as she runs on the spot trying to get to him. But just as it’s getting all cosy, a vortex opens up in the space/time continuum and all of Sonic’s buddies (which include some Chaotix members) get sucked into it. Some cynics would likely be happy to leave the game there, having solved the most irksome problem of the past 19 years, but they’d be missing out on some gorgeous gameplay, so let’s carry on.

GamesRadar also previews the 3DS version and praises the 3D effect:

The 3DS version of Sonic Generations is very different compared to the ‘big’ game, but at the same time very similar in that the more platform-centric Classic Sonic levels are countered by faster, more dazzling Modern Sonic levels. But they all look great in 3D. I played for a long while with the 3D slider up full and it didn’t feel strained on my eyes, which was good. It can look a little simplistic in the over-the-shoulder Modern sections, but that’s to keep the speed and fluidity up, which is obviously vitally important.

All four previews are extremely positive, which is very good to see this close to release when reviews will soon be due. Will Sonic Generations be critically acclaimed? We’ll have to wait and see…
