  • Sonic 3 Movie May Release in 2024, Hollywood Actor Tipped to Play Latest Sonic Rival

Sonic Movie writers weigh in during a community college panel.

The third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is likely to be released in theaters in 2024, and Paramount is already in talks with a Hollywood actor to play the role of Sonic's newly-announced rival in the upcoming sequel.

[ WARNING: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Ending Credits Scene Spoilers Contained Below ]

This is according to recent comments from Sonic movie writing duo Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, who spoke at a panel during an event held by Klamath Community College.

During the hour-long session, the creatives behind the first two Sonic movies were careful not to reveal too many details about the next Sonic the Hedgehog film, but what they did discuss left some room for interpretation as to which characters will feature and how the movie universe story arcs will evolve.

For instance, there is an acknowledgement of the Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog video game stories, and Miller said it was "not revealing" to suggest that there are plans to incorporate elements of those particular games' plots into the Sonic 3 movie.

Similarly, when asked about the appearance of Amy Rose, the duo could not comment too much due to a non-disclosure agreement, but said that things were "in the works."

On the subject of Shadow - who was revealed during Sonic 2's mid-credits sequence - Casey confirmed that they had a big name voice actor in mind for the angsty anti-hero. The situation right now appears to be that the studio is waiting for this particular actor to actually confirm that they want to accept the role. According to those at the Q&A, there was no indication that a previous video game voice actor would reprise the role of Shadow.

Other notes of interest, from the 'Movie Robotnik Positivity' Tumblr account:

    • Crush 40 has a mildly decent chance in appearing in the third film, though it’s not confirmed as of yet. Both Pat Casey and Josh Miller hope and lean towards the possibility of it being “Live and Learn.” The song choice is popular amongst the fans and the producers are very aware of this being a strong want (30:40 to 30:50).

    • Though not confirmed, it is heavily implied that there will be a new addition to Sonic’s growing team in each film, or at least one new character to the movies if the fans are interested in them/the film’s stories (31:55 to 32:25).

    • If Jim Carey were to retire from acting, the third movie’s direction will focus on other characters due to Sonic’s franchise being so vast. He would be missed, they would welcome him back if he wanted to take a break from the third and work on the fourth, but they are confident that he could return (33:40 to 35:00).

    • As of now, the script is in the “Blue Sky” Phase. This means that they’re still planning and every possible idea that could happen between characters and actors coming/leaving (35: 30 to 36:02).

    • They once again confirm that they were not sponsored by Olive Garden. The Zillow product placement also was added to the scene pretty late, the writers didn’t find out about it until the premiere. (6:46 to 7:41)

    • They just started playing Sonic Adventure 2 on X-Box (9:07 to 9:16)

    • The last concept Pat and Josh saw of what Movie Sonic’s before the first trailer looked like something in-between the old and final designs. They weren’t too sure about that first trailer either, but as writers it wasn’t their place to say anything.  (10:36 to 11:28)

    • Pat and Josh began working on the Sonic 2 script before the first movie came out. Seeing the fanbase’s reaction to Agent Stone actually led to them giving the character a bigger role than what they originally planned. (15:33 to 16:02)

    • Their take on Knuckles was inspired by Worf from Star Trek: The Next Generation. (21:32 to 21:43)

    • While writers aren’t usually involved in a movie after it goes into production, for the first Sonic movie Pat and Josh were brought on set to change things while they were shooting, and even got to help in the editing room after the movie got delayed. They did not get to visit the set during the filming of Sonic 2 due to the pandemic though (38:38 to 39:54)

Maybe you should actually check your sources before posting a link to a completely different article with no mention of SA2 whatsoever.

Not that it matters, since every search I've just made indicates that the "article" that screenshot is from, doesn't exist. The only results that pop up are some Reddit posts of the same exact image (with no links to any real source btw) and none of the actual interviews with Robert on GQ make any reference to Sonic in the slightest.

Yeah, as cool a detail as that might be, I’m not seeing it in the article linked. The linked article is a different news outlet, and GQ..i can’t find an interview like that. That’s starting to feel edited to me.

So, according to Josh, they will make the Sonic movie franchise as the next Fast and Furious if more people show up to watch more Sonic movies.:

I do hope that Sonic the Hedgehog can get over 5 movies at least.  There are so many characters from the franchise that they could use for the big screen.

Some comments I've read made me feel a little off as a fan of Sonic... because if Jim Carrey doesn't return, what's the point of Doctor Robotnik (or rather Doctor Eggman)? What will happen to his character? He was so good at it, I don't want him to retire - I really want him to come back for the third film. I cross my fingers and I hope so very much, because Jim Carrey was great at doing this character... no one else will be as good at it.

JIM CARREY PLEASE RETURN AS YOUR CHARACTER FOR THE THIRD MOVIE! Please, please, I really want you to come back. I believe in you. I don't want you to disappoint Sonic fans.

As long as Shadow isn’t Chris Pratt, I’m all good.

Also I’d actually prefer Crush 40’s Sonic Boom cover to be in a movie? That would make a really epic final boss battle.

    Yes I believe so too

Since, they are planning to include elements from Sonic Adventure 2, I can see Sonic go back to San Francisco. I think how I think Amy could be in the next one. Maybe, she was the property owner of a apartment in San Francisco and pretend to be human? We could see a backstory of how she got to Earth.:

I’m curious how this is all gonna play out tbh. They’re gonna have to stumble across other game cast members at some point (because plot) anyway, I think it would feel more natural if they stumbled across them them while portal-jumping worlds (maybe to find at least one of the chaos emeralds, or tracking/evading a non-Jimbotnik villain) rather than have everyone independently gravitate towards Earth or be already here.

If they want to make Sonic the next Fast & Furious-type franchise, then they'll be blowing their wad pretty early with [arguably] the most beloved 3D Sonic game.

Unless they go in reverse and do SA1 afterward, no other modern-era stories could really follow up on it movie-wise, besides maybe Heroes or Unleashed.

Yeah, was expecting SA1 to be up next myself. Very surprised that they're going straight to Shadow, though he is pretty popular.

    Spoiler

Unless they combine the two, but... I hope they don't. Wachowski needs to defeat a legit god by himself first, ya know?

I think they should do at least seven films so that the collectors box set can be styled after the chaos emeralds. Also if they run out of games to adapt they can always take inspiration from non game media. I’ve been saying that the Metal virus arc would be the Infinity War of the Sonic movies.

Ooh, I'd love that! And then they can top it by introducing Solaris...

Phew. I'm sure I'll nope out at a point once they start getting to the abstract stuff.

But it will be nice seeing how the film franchise takes a life of its own.

Black Doom must be their back up villian if they can’t get jim Carrey back

Or Agent Stone could get promoted from a sidekick to a villain, maybe taking up the moniker of “Eggman,” not “Robotnik.” He was disguised as a GUN Agent.

    Yeah, thanks.

Also, do you think Randall will return for the next movie? I could imagine a scene of Randall and his squad trying to take down Shadow.:

I realized that Neal H. Moritz was one of the executive producers for the TV show, SWAT which the Randall actor stars in. I think he was probably as close to an government agent that they could get for the movie. I think that may be the reason why he got casted when he was officially announced months ago.:

That would be interesting if Randall had a bigger role in the third movie in capturing Shadow or something like that.

If Rouge appear in the movie. They could use a design similar to this one. This was drawn by ThePinkGalaxy55 from Twitter.:

So, it's look like we got an little update on The Knuckles TV show and it will connected to the third movie. The TV show will take place before the third movie. So, I guess we got the TV show to hold us over. It's going to be a while, since the movie will not be out until 2024.:

Interesting.  I do wonder if they will have some flashbacks to Knuckles' past in the series.  And I wonder what characters will be introduced into the series besides Sonic and Tails?  Maybe Rouge might make an appearance and maybe Amy Rose as well.

Yeah, so, the TV show will be a miniseries. That is pretty much what some of the TV shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye that Marvel did for the past few years. All of these TV shows were setting up future MCU movies and TV shows. So, the show probably not intended to last that long.

Also, all of that is possible. Introducing new characters like Rouge and Amy in the TV show might save a lot of screen time for the third movie. So, there could be enough screen time for what the third movie need to show.
