Playlists Chill Out With These Nostalgic VHS-Style Sonic Music Videos

It goes without saying that one of the significant, most impactful elements of a Sonic the Hedgehog game (or just a SEGA game in general) is its music. For over 30 years, masterful tunes from Masato Nakamura, Jun Senoue, Richard Jacques, Tee Lopes et al have all helped burn our experiences of these games into our memories - and now a fan on YouTube is celebrating this by crafting a unique playlist that couples classic tracks with VHS-style visuals to offer an intensely nostalgic audio trip.

The following videos were created by a channel called 'Low Poly', and offers a series of "relaxing" and "cozy" songs from the Dreamcast and SEGA Saturn era to nod along to while working, browsing, or napping! The music is accompanied by scenes of Sonic Adventure (for the Dreamcast video) and Sonic R (for the Saturn one) using a program called "ntscQT" to digitally alter the picture so that it looks super-retro.

It's simple, but it's incredibly novel and effective - I've certainly enjoyed watching the calming scenes of Station Square while At Dawn plays out in the background. As a 1990s kid who remembers playing the original Sonic Adventure on his (not tiny at the time!) 14" CRT VHS/TV combo in his bedroom, this is hitting all the right notes for me.

Give it a listen when you have a spare moment - grab a cup of tea, get comfy in a chair and let the classic Sonic music chill you out for an hour or so. Here's the Dreamcast Era music video:
