Bonus Challenge

Hello Knuckles. This is a screenshot from Sonic 3D in 2D. My first playthrough was with Knuckles so I can take part in the bonus challenge. I was hopeful that I'd be able to complete the game too, but it has been most troublesome for me to do so. The game does well in recreating aspects of 3D Blast and adds some new stuff too. As tough as it was to unlock the super form, once you get it, still doesn't mean an easy win.

New Additions

21. Pikmin 3 Deluxe - Complete

Spoiler

202404230424230012s.thumb.jpg.9479ac277ab0dfec0e2f172195cb28ac.jpg

I'm not hip with the kids, but I'm gonna say this so bear with me. I've been on a Pikmin binge as of late and having completed 4 last year, which was my first Pikmin game ever, I've decided to go backwards, rather then jump to 1. I took two screenshots of the Piklopedia, the most important part of those screenshots are the maxed out numbers.

Completing the story wasn't a guarantee to also find all fruit and register all enemies. While writing this, I've already experienced most of Pikmin 2 and can comfortably say the series has evolved in such a way that makes it easier to prevent Pikmin death. I don't know if they slowed down the enemy attacks, speed up the Pikmin or maybe it's the additional mechanics like Flying Pikmin in 3 and Oatchi in 4. My point is, I wanted to keep the Pikmin demise to a minimum. I was doing pretty well in 4, but some enemies were an issue, especially the secret final boss. Pikmin 3 Deluxe was slightly worse if I recall correctly and I already know Pikmin 2 is in the hundreds. All signs point to Pikmin genocide in Pikmin 1.

Something Pikmin 3 Deluxe does that Pikmin 4 didn't was allow you to switch between three characters. 4 goes back to switching between two, which Pikmin 2 originally did with Olimar and Louie. Does...that make sense?

That is pretty much it for what I can say in regards to Pikmin 3 Deluxe. It was rather uneventful, I managed to complete Olimar's Prologue and Epilogue, getting a bronze medal at most for every mission. I well say that the chase to rescue Olimar was rather hellish and took several attempts. More things have been going wrong in my Pikmin 2 run. I imagine I'll have more to say when that is complete, but for this week, that is all.

Knock Knock!

Wait… that’s not how I usually start these update posts? Anyways, hello again - I’m back with another update. I have been able to add another new game to the list of finished/completed titles this week, and would have added in another one in enough time had it not been for trying to finish Tails’ campaign in Sonic Adventure DX, and then making a start on a run through of a couple of LEGO titles on my XBOX, which means I didn’t have time to do a run through of that classic point-and-click adventure that I mentioned in my previous post. Save that for next week. In the meantime, I will talk about the game that I managed to finish shortly, but first…

BONUS KNUCKLES WEEK BONUS: Sonic Adventure DX (XBOX One) (again)

IMG_8050.thumb.jpeg.333d1de8a1ffa7e6505a345ce5c8c609.jpeg

IMG_8057.thumb.jpeg.a60ad0a721481bc9fc5c6d8c209ec7f3.jpeg

Knock knock, it’s Knuckles!

Yes, that’s right, I managed to make a start on Knuckles’ story in Sonic Adventure DX just in time to honour the new TV series… or rather, just to honour “The Big Red Machine” himself (no, not the wrestler, who are you talking about?!). As before with the Big The Cat challenge, I won’t be counting SA1 as part of the finished/completed list as I still have some way to go with completing the full game, but I have to say that I have actually been enjoying playing through Knuckles’ levels, even if they are rather minimal in terms of goals and therefore contribute to a rather short story in comparison with other characters.

Having said that though, I have been able to make a couple of screenshots from his story, with our favourite echidna standing in front of the steps of the Master Emerald Altar (despite the emerald still being in pieces, no thanks to Chaos), as well as the score I got from my first run of the Casinopolis action stage, which I admit I could have done better in, but I felt like it was OK for a first attempt. I’ll post another update on my progress in SA1 when I can, but I might leave it until I get further into the story. After Knuckles, I will only have to complete Amy and Gamma’s stages before getting to the last story.

As for the game that I managed to complete this time around, well, it’s another Mario titles to add to the list, but it’s not Mario 64 (yet)…

Game 10: Super Mario Bros. 2 (Super Mario All-Stars Version) (SNES (Switch Online)) - Finished 28/04/24 - 100% Completed

IMG_8051.thumb.jpeg.905720d78d01ec318e571cc0c4669e95.jpeg

Ah yes, the Mario game that technically isn’t a Mario game at all! Essentially a re-skinned version of Doki Doki Panic, (yes, I know that’s not the real title, but I can’t be bothered to type out the full name as it will take me forever) for Western audiences, it was released as the official version of Mario 2 because apparently Japan’s version was too tough for us (really?!), even though it did lead to the introduction of some iconic enemies to the Mario franchise, including Shy Guys, Bob-Omb’s, Birdo, and… Sonic?!

IMG_8052.thumb.jpeg.e2c98b3051b501975e4eefe017cdc8c7.jpeg

Even before the Mario Bros.’ rivalry with Sonic began, Mario and Luigi were still being dicks to hedgehogs…

Anyhow… The second adventure for the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom involves Mario and co. taking a trip into the strange worlds of Subcon, as they try to stop the evil toad known as Wart and his tyranny over the lands. Whilst there are some elements carried over from the other Mario titles, it doesn’t have the usual set of power-ups that you would expect, and some of the gameplay mechanics are unique to this game in that you can’t kill enemies by jumping on them, but instead you pull vegetables out of the ground and throw them at your foes to knock them out. Yes, vegetables. You can, however, also pick up some enemies and then throw them at others instead.

IMG_8053.thumb.jpeg.6733b5c96e8f484ddda3fe64e42e9091.jpeg

What’s that, Wart? You haven’t seen the ads on TV about vegetables? You need to eat them to defeat them, you know! (Don’t know if anyone will get that reference…)

In all honesty, whilst I did enjoy the fact that you can play as multiple characters in this game, and the music is as great as any other Mario game would have, I found this particular game to be quite frustrating at times, especially in the later levels, where you can easily get hit by electrical shock enemies, and the throwing mechanic can take getting used to, with misses being incredibly annoying, since you aren’t always given enough time to throw an item to hit your foe before you get hit yourself. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for a different take on the usual 2D Mario platforming action, this might be worth checking out in case you’re curious.

IMG_8055.thumb.jpeg.8ff6d8291519a5bfe2222825b330eb98.jpeg

This ending sucks, by the way. Should have mentioned that.

Anyways, as for what I have planned next week, I will continue to play through the LEGO titles, finish 100% completion of another Mario game and the aforementioned point-and-click game, and I may also try to get some other titles in the bag too if I have enough time. See you again soon! Now, where did I put those emerald shards?

I was able to get one game finished this week, thanks to some help from some friends!

Game #4: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (Finished)

image.thumb.png.32035d2d446480090a8f64a084f516fd.png

This is a game I wasn't planning on picking up for a while, but when the opportunity arose to play with some friends, I said "why not" and got to play with them for the duration of the main campaign. All I really knew about this game was the mass amounts of negative comments it was getting and that it was a continuation of the Arkham series. So going in, I didn't have many expectations.

I can say with full confidence that this game wasn't nearly as bad as people on the internet were prepping me for it to be. As a fan of the Arkham series, while Suicide Squad did deviate from the usual combat style and overall tone from the previous games, I think that worked in its favor. It is refreshing to have the same style and polish of writing we got in Arkham Knight carry over into a wider world. It's also really cool to see a portrayal of an evil Batman done by Kevin Conroy. The gameplay is chaotic a lot of the time, making it hard to know where to go and what to do, but it still lends itself to some fun combos. I do think I enjoyed it much more by playing with others. If I had been playing it alone, I probably would've gotten bored or tired of it (especially during the Batman portion with the fear toxin because good lord I wouldn't want to sit and watch three AI go through that whole thing).

Overall, it's been a good time. I'm looking forward to continuing it to get the trophies and play through the Battle Pass!

As for my other games, I'm making some really solid progress on Virtue's Last Reward. I finally got to the last ending after many, many, many hours of just listening to characters over explain things. I was hoping to complete it this week, but there's only so many puzzles I can do and dialogue I can listen to / read before my brain melts. I should have it done this week as long as I have some free time.

I've also been progressing through the current Fortnite BP. Almost to level 100, so it should be finished soon.

Per usual, Midnight Suns, Baldur's Gate 3, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will get done at some point.

Finished: 4

Completed: 2

Weekly Check-in

Figured I'd get this in before the transition to Sonic Advance 2. For once, not only did I make progress on something, but I 100% completed a game as well.

Doom 64 (Remastered, PS4) Game 4 of 52 Beat, 2 of 52 100% Completed

I would've uploaded screenshots from the PS4 itself, but since I'm not currently by it, these screenshots from the PlayStation App will have to simply do for now:

Screenshot_20240428-185821.thumb.png.b0cd69b99aac47ca66f89a38eb179418.pngScreenshot_20240428-190104.thumb.png.8e0ab406c18030fad5197e716256af19.png

I completed the main campaign, the additional Lost Levels made for the remaster/port, and obtained all trophies. A bit of a different take on classic Doom, but still essentially the same. It's a shame that up until this rerelease, it was often overlooked as simply an N64 port of Doom, rather than the completely new game that it is. The new Lost Levels were a neat addition too, acting as a formal bridge/transition between the classic Doom games (1, 2, and Final) and the more recent releases (2016 and Eternal), story wise.

So this week spurred me to dust off Sonic Mania for the first time in years, and to actually beat Knuckles' campaign for once. Too bad I remembered how garbage the game's special stages are, and how worse finding the things in the first place is, and combined with the whole Everything Else(TM) going on with me right now, I'm not going to be able to finish it in what little time remains in the week. But I'm going to 100% it eventually. Maybe.

Anyway, knock knock.

WEEK 16: FAILIN'S POST GAME

This check in will tie into Knuckles week as I strived to get Series Knuckles in Sonic Dash. But this FOMO rush has gotten me so sick and tired of the current event system that I just had to turn what would have been a normal blog / vent piece... into a full Sonic Stadium article.

Yes, this article is also my check in. Enjoy the rant.

WEEKLY CHECK-IN: SONIC MANIA, KNUCKLES (& Knuckles) Campaign: Finished

image.thumb.png.c681b919140f92440e29e68197d49d95.png

How long has it been since I've played this game? Sonic Mania, a very fun throwback to the Sonic of old. To celebrate Knuckles week, I decided that his game would be fun to do a quick playthrough. Something simple, something fun, a very casual playthrough as Knuckles. But upon starting the game up, I had realized that I hadn't switched off "& Knuckles" mode, so I was greeted with two Knuckles on my screen.

I ended up decided to keep this mode on just to keep with the spirit of this week lol.

It's kind of interesting playing as Knuckles, as his jump isn't as high as Sonic's making some of the boss battles slightly more tense (Particularly the act 1 boss of Flying Battery Zone), but it's fun to climb walls and take paths that Sonic would otherwise not reach. Knuckles' gliding ability and climbing is often the reason why I enjoy playing as him as it makes level exploration fun. As a neat bonus, it was cool playing an alternate version of Mirage Saloon zone.

It was a lot of fun revisiting this game, a very easy game to pick up and play whether it be portable or on television. And that ending screen of Knuckles was the perfect photo for this event!

I have plenty of games that I want to finish up for this challenge, most notably Fallout 4 now that it got its next-gen update. But for now, I have my first final exam tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Hoo boy. I didn't expect this game to be so much of a project. Honestly I could've submitted this thing weeks ago because the big achievements I had left were from the DLCs, but I didn't feel like trying to explain that and there's no percentage completion anywhere. Speaking of those DLCs, I got them for free along with the game itself thanks to Google Play Pass, which is apparently a thing, and used a Backbone to at least simulate playing on a PS4 close enough. As far as I'm aware I'm one of the few on this whole site who likes rogue-likes (Hades seems to be an exception, a lot more people like it) and I've heard of Dead Cells a few times so when it was presented to me on a silver platter, I couldn't say no. And what a game it was, genuinely challenging even after I altered the settings slightly to give myself a bit of leeway. Managing to no-hit the secret final boss (Technically DLC too but I decided to do it anyways or aforementioned reasons) might be one of the best things I've done in a while lol. Can't recommend the game enough.

Also worth noting that the play store achievements don't list any from the Return to Castlevania DLC but I made sure to do those too. This is technically the first Castlevania game in like 10+ years. Oof.

Game Number 28/52: Knuckles Chaotix (100% Complete)

A very strange Sonic game for sure, having the two characters running while holding rings tethered to each other, having a similar art style to Sonic CD, and sporting a relatively easy difficulty. I talk more about it in this thread, but in short, a fun and stand out experience.

Game Rating: 4 Out Of 5:

Time for my late status update!

To celebrate Wade Week, I played through the entirety of Sonic 3 AIR. I'd say this counts as completion since I got all the Super Emeralds for the best ending, and Knuckles also appears in the game as well.

Now if you don't mind, I want to get back to Persona 5.

Its fitting that the game that got lost in the post shows up late.

Nothing to add to this list this time, I completed the Undead Nightmare portion of Red Dead Redemption Remastered to bring that up to platimum #400 and have been chipping away at Assassins Creed Odyssey.

Alright, without further ado, on to the game.

51. Mega Man 10 (if not 100%, then as close as Proto Man could get, since I didn't see anything for bonuses)

First off, why the photos? I did this on my Xbox One, since I felt like playing on that for some reason, and I couldn't figure out a good way to get the screenshots that didn't require an app I'd rather not download, which made me glad I took the photos as a backup plan. But that's not an issue with the game itself, just with Xbox's dumb screenshot system.

But on to the game itself. The story goes that Roll came down with a fever, despite being a robot. As it turned out, there is a Roboenza outbreak that's affecting robots. Dr. Wily claims to have been shot down by one of these robots, and claims to be seeking Mega Man for help. Not left with another choice, Mega Man goes to help Wily. But he's not alone; Proto Man joins in upon deciding he'll need help.

Take a wild guess who turns out to be behind the Roboenza outbreak. Go on. Guess.

I did this as Proto Man, not only so he gets to be the star for once, but also, he gets the charge and the slide, which was sorely missing in Mega Man 9. I also did this on easy mode, which adds platforms and items out the wazoo, however; if you play on this mode, you'd have to try to lose. But I didn't feel like challenging myself too much.

I did like the detail of Proto Man's shop having Auto being called ?????, and Auto just acting simply professional, which I suppose makes sense.

Other than that? Eight robot masters, a boss rush (I'm finding I am not a fan of boss rushes unless they at least give me something new to fight), and a Wily fight at the end. I really don't have much new to say here; most of what I had to say about this one was already said about Mega Man 1-9.

I'd still give this one a go, though, since it's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but I am glad I took a break before jumping into this one.

Game no 20 completed at 100%ed - Tails' skypatrol.

I'm still missing my Sonic Shuffle profile card from the 3 weeks'ago too if anyone can help?

A short sharp game this, and one which I've only recently revisited. Its, well...yeh. it exists??? Its better than Labrynth and moves about as quick as it too. The introduction of Wendy Witchcart and the other odd characters is just so out there its almost like the game is Tails' opium dream.

Check in for this week is Horizon. Still. Not done the final miission yet but finished off cauldorn kappa and the side qiest involving the dragon head in the casino and subseqent balloon flight and battle.  Had a bit of fun in the cauldron and loved the water level puzzle. The Tide Ripper was a well balanced boss too. So happy days.

Huh, I didn't get the profile gifts or achievements again...

Can you verify if this is still the case?

Also, as a general notice to everyone - please wait until a week has passed before claiming this being the case. @Dreadknuxdistributes prizes when he gets a chance to do so, but he's a very busy man and it can take some time for us to get everything out.

I'm still missing my Sonic Shuffle profile card from the 3 weeks'ago too if anyone can help?

This is my bad. I must've missed you when noting down everyone for check-in rewards. I've alerted Dread and he'll hopefully have it out to you soon.

All rewards should be handed out for everything now (Knuckles Week, Profile Gift, Knuckles Challenge and Chuckle Ring Bonus). I remember putting yours through so definitely worth checking - let me know if there's anything missing!

Ongoing: SaGa Emerald Beyond (Switch) - SaGa!  Somewhere in all the SaGa rereleases during the Switch's lifetime, I became a SaGa fan; and here we are with the first all-new SaGa game in quite a number of years.  It's essentially SaGa Scarlet Grace by way of SaGa Frontier - heavy emphasis on the battle timeline, but with many segmented worlds of wildly different themes.  And the game is dense.  People have reported totally different experiences depending on what character you play, what choices you make, how many times you've beaten the game or even beaten just an individual character!  For now, my goal is just to beat the game with all five/six protagonists - starting with the most vanilla, Tsunanori Mido, a straight-talking guy assisted by four magical puppets.  The final boss kind of comes out of nowhere and was surprisingly easy - but who knows what it'll be like for other characters on other playthroughs...?  Beneath the spoiler bar are screenshots proving that I've beaten Tsunanori's campaign - for however much that counts...

Ongoing: Picontier (Switch) - I am presently working on farming up stocks to max out the seed shrines for rice and broccoli - very meaningful statement to non-Picontier-players (a.k.a. everyone), I know - and whilst I do that, having maxed out affection for all but two characters, I've been going through filling in everyone's three likes and dislikes.  Some are reasonably obvious and clued, and I worked out quite a few just chatting to the islanders every day; but I don't know how you're supposed to figure out many of them except by looking at the Picontier wiki...

Checking in for this week. Didn’t really play any games due to uni kicking my ass. Was thinking of playing Street Fighter X Mega Man or Hellfire Saga, but I’ve been busy with finals and final papers. Will prolly be the case for next week as well but we’ll see what happens.

Weekly Check-in

I managed to get an excused day off of school today due to my bus not showing up, so you know what that means - game time!

Pac-Man Arrangement (Pac-Man Collection Port of Arcade Game, GBA) Game 5 of 52 Beat, 3 of 52 100% Completed

For a couple hours, I got roped into having to travel with my dad somewhere, so I made sure to bring my Nintendo DS Lite for some entertainment. One way or another, I ended up choosing to play this. A fun take on the classic Pac-Man formula that's often overlooked by people, which isn't helped by the fact that it hasn't gotten many ports since its original release in arcades (luckier than the other Namco Arrangement titles though, which either have one port or none at all). It has power ups, little boost things that propel you forward, an assortment of mazes with different themes, a new ghost, Kinky, that fuses with each of the classic foursome to create powered up forms with extra abilities (ex: Funky + Pinky = bunny/rabbit ghost thing that can hop to anywhere in the maze), and a final boss. I have fond memories of this game, as my dad and I would play it often on the PS2 version of Namco Museum (the 2001/2002 installment) whenever I got to stay up on the weekends when I was younger. We completed it several times over, (as well as me on my own having completed it on Pac-Man Museum+ a couple years back), so this was far from new territory for me, other than the fact it was on a smaller screen. Being a simple arcade game, there's nothing else to 100% completing it other than just beating the game. I would've gotten a picture of the ending screen, but it went by within seconds, so I didn't get the chance. In compensation though, I did get a screenshot of my high score (although your score resets whenever you die and continue, your score is immediately boosted up upon beating the final boss) before shutting it down, as the compilation has no way of saving scores:

I'll probably make some progress on something else this weekend, but in case I don't, for now, that's my check-in for the week.
