I find it odd that the two characters in the comics who should be most familiar with his speed - constantly sell Sonic very short.

 

its one thing when Eggman underestimates his fortitude or resolve - but another thing entirely to be surprised at how fast Sonic can move, or what it will take to overcome that speed. Tails seems to fall into that trap too. In issue 42 Tails knew Sonic was in WinterBurg when the Zeti attacked Restoration HQ and not only figured he himself would be the first Hero to make it back in time, but actually told Sonic that he would wait for him when he got there. 

Sonic made it back to HQ and spent more than half of the next issue fighting Zeti before Tails could even make it there. That's an immense miscalculation.

 

I get that Sonic's speed is usually measured as "as fast as he needs to be" but its odd seeing Tails and Eggman repeatedly have such low expectations.

Im still on the collected edition vol 3, so the end of the metal virus ark. 

Has the series jumped the shark since this point?

Not really, but the narrative became looser (especially post 50). Lower stakes, smaller arcs, with much more breathing room.

Is it still worth reading beyond this point in your view?

It has its ups and downs. Personally, I would prefer going back to higher stakes, but it's still worth my time. (Although now Evan is co-main writer. Again, she has her strengths over Flynn, but overall I think he's better).

I say at the very least reach issue 50 (don't skip "Imposter Syndrome" or "Bad Guys" mini series) and afterward Scrapnik Island mini. If those stories don't convince you to stick around, nothing latter will.
