  1. Team Dark may have been a consistent team for years in both the games and Archie comics, but they no longer exist as anything but an out-of-unverse brand, according to IDW Sonic and Sonic Frontiers writer Ian Flynn. When a fan asked Flynn on his podcast what kind of base Team Dark would have, Flynn answered they wouldn’t have a base, because SEGA does not consider them a team. “Team Dark isn’t a thing. It’s an out-of-universe brand, apparently. They are not a unit, they are not even friends,” Flynn said, “They don’t do mission things together unless the story has them doing it.” He want on to state his belief that Team Dark makes the most sense out of all of the teams (aside from the Chaotix), and that he doesn’t like this. Sonic Prime Timeline Placement

So we all know that this show is said to be canon by the people running the show, right. So, where would this fit best? My guess is just before or straight after Colours, just because of Cubot existing. Or it could be after Forces as Sonic said to Shadow, "I know what you're capable of." This makes me think of the Infinite Squad massacre lol. Insane idea, but it could also take place after Sonic X Metarex saga since there are no humans, although you would have to explain the difference with the Rings. Plus, you could say we didn't see the part where Shadow returned from Molly's grave. Yes, Sonic's character seems a tad off, but it's been a bit off in the games since Colours and it's only just in Frontiers that it seems to be getting back to "normal" again. So this show is still considered to be in the timeline, in my eyes, unless Sega says otherwise. So what does everyone think? Some people might find this pointless but eh, it's a bit of fun.

  4. Yeah, so this backstory was apparently written by Sega of Japan back during development of the first game and subsequently translated by the Sega Technical Institute, and it easily beats the Sonic Bible as the weirdest ex-canon origin for Sonic. Though, to be honest, I don't hate the idea of It's weird and a lot is left unexplained, but it doesn't technically contradict the game canon, So until Sega makes an official game origin, this is the closest we'll get to a true origin for Sonic.
  5. So it seems the old photography thread got lost in the wipe. At least, my original post did. This is kind of a good opportunity though, I suppose, as it's a chance to make my original intent clear with the older thread. So, we have the Post Your Pictures thread already. It never really saw much use, but the purpose behind it was to take pictures of random stuff and just show SSMB your snapshots. That's totally cool, but not exactly what this thread's intention is. I want to focus more on art photography in particular. High quality gear is not required, but very heavily encouraged. It's not quite as expensive as you think! Entry level cameras fall around the range of video game consoles, and go down in price quite steeply during big sales like Black Friday. Personally, I'm using this - Sony a6000 $698 on Amazon 80% on DPReview DPReview is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn about cameras. Best there is, imo. If you're in the market for a camera, consult that site first and foremost. The best entry level cameras of 2014 - Fujifilm X-M1 $599 on Amazon 77% on DPReview Nikon D5200 $646 on Amazon 79% on DPReview $699 on Amazon 76% on DPReview Now I know what you're all thinking - should I go mirrorless or dslr DSLRs have a wider variety of natively compatible lenses, slightly better night performance, and better battery life. Mirrorless cameras are substantially smaller and lighter, perform faster, and are better for video. It's up to you what you value most, but personally, I think mirrorless cameras are the future and the much smarter investment right now. If you have any questions regarding equipment or technique, ask away here. I'm more than happy to help and discuss. On to photos! 6. I've been thinking a good while about where exactly Sonic CD takes place in the entire Classic Sonic era of games. It's been officially declared (and fairly obvious) that Sonic CD never had an intended place in the entire scope of things, fitting that vague place between Sonic 1 and Sonic Adventure, which is now being detailed to take place somewhere between Sonic 1 and Sonic 4. But that's not really enough detail for me, you see! The way I've looked at it, there are generally 3 theories that can be adhered to, but only 2 of them are actually plausible. I want to address the non-plausible one before I start detailing the other 2 and give my thoughts on them. The Chronological Argument This argument states that Sonic CD takes place between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, in accordance to the date in which it was released. It seems simple enough, and is the only real reason that someone would pick this one. People will generally assume this as the most reasonable argument, but it quickly falls apart to these major points: Problems: 1. Sonic 2 directly leads into Sonic 3 If Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 weren't connected to each other in any way, this wouldn't be an issue. However even when you don't have the instruction manuals to lead you along, it's pretty obvious that right after the Death Egg falls from outer space in Sonic 2, it immediately crashes onto Angel Island, leading into the rest of the Death Egg Saga. If Little Planet shows up and Sonic CD happens inbetween, that means that Eggman is abandoning the whole Death Egg Project along with the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds to take this jarring detour for who knows how long. 2. Sonic still has the Chaos Emeralds At the end of Sonic 2, if you get the good (read: true) ending, Sonic will transform into Super Sonic to strike a pose, and Sonic and Tails fly off-screen supposedly to relax. When Sonic 3 starts up, after the duo are made aware of Angel Island's existence, Sonic turns into Super Sonic again to show off, only to have Knuckles knock him out of his Super form. As we can see, Sonic obviously still has the emeralds he collected from Sonic 2. If Sonic CD takes place between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, this creates a massive plothole: why wouldn't Sonic just use the Chaos Emeralds to get it all over and done with if he already had them in his possession? 3. Tails is absent With the exception of "SEE YOU NEXT GAME!" and the DA Garden, which will play a part in the other arguments, and his role as an unlockable bonus for the Taxman port, Tails is absolutely nowhere to be seen. This opens the same kind of plothole as the Chaos Emeralds: Tails usually follows Sonic everywhere he goes, so if Sonic CD comes after Sonic 2, where did he go? It's arguable that his absence is akin to that of Sonic 4: Episode 1's, where he was just in the background building a rocket for Sonic to reach the EGG Station, however I personally feel that this refutation alone isn't enough to undermine the other major points. If those aren't enough to deter one from latching onto the "Chronological Argument," then I'm not sure what else I can say. For those who didn't think that Sonic CD could take place between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, then I have 2 other plausible arguments to follow, and the main question to ask is this: Does Sonic CD take place... BEFORE OR AFTER THE DEATH EGG SAGA If Sonic CD can't take place after Sonic 2 and before Sonic 3, then it certainly can't take place between Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Those titles directly lead into each other. They lock-on, for goodness sake! With this point made apparent, let's take a look at these two possible scenarios, which I have dubbed The Hardware/Tails Argument, and The Metal Sonic/Sonic 4 Argument. And without further ado... Hardware/Tails Argument Basically, this argument dictates that because Sonic 2 and Sonic CD were developed simultaneously, that it's most logical that the Little Planet event takes place before the Death Egg Saga begins, which is also before Sonic ever met Tails, explaining his absence. Supporting Points: 1. Development History Even though Sonic 2 was released before Sonic CD, a whole year before it actually, the simple fact is that these games were being developed at the same time. Yuji Naka was working on Sonic 2 in America while Naoto Oshima was working on Sonic CD in Japan. The focus behind this point is that because these 2 games were so close together in development, that it's plausible for Sonic CD to have it's placement earlier in the timeline, especially since it's a self-contained adventure, and since Sonic 2 would have direct sequels that would make Sonic CD's inclusion after that game implausible. Think of it like this: Sonic 2 was released earlier, but Sonic CD gets the birthright. 2. See You Next Game! Now see, this is where Tails' absence would make perfect sense. Tails is not around because Sonic has not met him yet, simple as that. Add to that the Easter Egg teasing Tails' inclusion in the next game, which we can assume is Sonic 2 if we take this theory as legitimate, it's very possible that Sonic CD was meant to take place before Sonic 2 after all. Potential Problems: Metal Sonic's Design Metal Sonic as we see him nowadays is apparently the same model as Sonic CD's. This implies that Metal Sonic is the best one that Eggman has created, therefore making the implication that Eggman wouldn't have to go through other designs. But this isn't the case, as after Sonic CD, Mecha Sonic mk.I, aka Silver Sonic, is introduced. He's a bulky and clunky robotic Sonic that doesn't seem anywhere near as powerful or effective as Metal Sonic. The same goes for Mecha Sonic mk.II, otherwise known simply as Mecha Sonic, making his debut in Sonic & Knuckles. While he can use the Master Emerald's energy to power up, he still is never seen again, and Metal Sonic's model is once again used in favor of these succeeding models. It seems kind of odd for Eggman to make these different and less powerful robotic Sonic doppelgangers only to go back to the more first Metal Sonic design. How It Can Be Addressed: Eggman is Flustered This seems like an arbitrary cop-out, but it may be the best solution if you want Sonic CD to take place before Sonic 2. Sonic 4: Episode 2's story implies that Metal Sonic was left damaged and inoperable on Little Planet when it disappeared, meaning that Eggman didn't have the ability to repair or work on Metal Sonic. After he starts making the Death Egg, Sonic is soon approaching and Eggman has to put together a powerful robot to keep Sonic occupied while he readies the Death Egg Robot. This would explain the bulky and inefficient appearance of Silver Sonic, and why he's so easy for Sonic to destroy. When Sonic defeats him, it's all over for Silver Sonic, there are no scraps left. Eggman is simply too occupied with the Death Egg Project to put serious effort into designing a better designed robot Sonic, so we get weird and clunky results such as what we see in Silver Sonic. Enter Sonic & Knuckles, where the famous Mecha Sonic makes his one and only debut. He seems to have more resilience, as Sonic alone isn't able to finish him off, and it's Knuckles who is the one to deal the final blow. But even so, Mecha Sonic still isn't able to handle all the damage and is eventually destroyed, despite absorbing some of the Master Emerald's power. To summarize, We see chunky robot Sonics instead of the sleek and deadly Metal Sonic after Sonic CD because Metal disappears after CD, Eggman has to focus on the Death Egg and isn't putting his all into the Sonic doppelgangers. I think that's a plausible reconciliation. But say that this isn't enough, and you find the change in Metal Sonic's design to be too jarring. That's why we have... The Metal Sonic/Sonic 4 Argument This argument puts forth the idea that because of Metal Sonic's sleek design and Sonic CD's role in the entirety of Sonic 4, that Sonic CD takes place after the Death Egg Saga and before the Sonic 4 Saga. This theory has just as many pros and cons as the Hardware/Tails Argument, so it's equally plausible. Here are the main points: Supporting Points: 1. Metal Sonic's Design The progression of Silver Sonic to Mecha Sonic and finally to Metal Sonic seems logical. Defeat after defeat, Eggman keeps refining the abilities of his line of robotic Sonics until he finally comes up with Metal Sonic. This eliminates the convoluted reasoning of Eggman being too focused on the Death Egg Project to worry about improving his robot Sonics. Besides, this would imply that he lost all of his collected data. A good robotic engineer wouldn't forget to save his blueprints! That is unless they were destroyed by Sonic along with the Death Egg, but I digress... 2. Sonic CD Is A Direct Prologue SEGA has kept no secrets of their intention to make Sonic CD the prologue to the Sonic 4 Saga, and it makes sense to place it directly before said Saga. This isn't exactly the strongest argument, but if we accept Sonic CD as taking place after the Death Egg Saga and as a direct lead into the whole Sonic 4 Saga, then things seem more streamlined and understandable. Potential Problems: Tails is MIA One of the supporting points for the Hardware/Tails Argument is Tails' absence, making the claim that Sonic hadn't met Tails yet, due to his tendency to follow Sonic everywhere, especially at this point in his character development. Now after the Death Egg Saga, it can only be assumed that Sonic and Tails' bond is even stronger. If this is the case, then where is he? His inclusion as an unlockable character in the Taxman port is a thought, but since it wasn't included in the original game, it can't be used as an excuse, nor can "SEE YOU NEXT GAME," as Tails is totally absent from the first episode of Sonic 4, not that an Easter Egg should dictate canon, but it's worth noting. How It Can Be Addressed: Tails is Skypatrolin' While Tails Skypatrol isn't considered to be canon, the idea of Tails going on his own adventure or going on vacation could be a possible fix. The idea of making Tails Skypatrol canon just for the sake of explaining his absence in Sonic CD and Sonic 4: Episode 1, only to work "behind the shadows" to build Sonic a rocket seems like a stretch. But to be fair, it's not that much more of a stretch than Eggman misplacing his original Metal Sonic blueprints. Because of both argument's potential problems and potential fixes, they are both equally viable as candidate for official canon. In my honest opinion, I feel that Sonic CD takes place before Sonic 2. My reasoning is because in the time it takes for the Little Planet to return to Sonic's world, the entire Death Egg Saga would have happened. However, it's just as fair to assume that the time between Sonic CD and Sonic 4: Episode 2 in the opposing theory is just as long as it would take the Death Egg Saga to run it's course. Chalk this one up to personal preference. But what do you all think? Do you think there's another potential place for Sonic CD, or are these 3 2 good enough to pick from? Have I made any mistakes here, and is there anything that needs fixing? Please discuss! Hopefully we can get a step closer to molding the Classic Timeline a little more clearly. EDIT: I am just removing the broken Tinypic embeds since they contained text that is no longer readable. -Indy, 05/19/2020
  7. I SPENT A LONG TIME RESEARCHING THIS REALLY HARD. THIS IS COPYRIGHT ME. SegaSonic and his friends Mighty and Ray defeated Eggman for the first time (SegaSonic the Hedgehog). At the end of this, Robotnik created Tails out of SegaSonic's Sega energy (thus removing the "Sega" part of SegaSonic's name) and tied him to Sonic to slow him down (Sonic Crackers). Sonic and Tails, after breaking the ring bond, get their revenge on Robotnik (Sonic 2). After the end of that game, Tails sees a strange disturbance in the distance and flies away to investigate (Tails Sky Patrol). Then he comes back to Sonic, who's still with the Tornado, and they fly to Angel Island (Sonic 3/K). Afterwards, Eggman realizes how much Tails has been helping Sonic, so he captures Tails, and Sonic tries to save him (Sonic 2 8-bit). After Sonic has beat Eggman, he captures Tails AGAIN immediately after, storing him away in a secret holding facility. Sonic becomes depressed at his repeated failure and spends most of his time reading books (Sonic and the Secret Rings). Then he meets Amy, and for a while she becomes his friend, before getting kidnapped by Metal Sonic (Sonic CD). Afterwards, they decide to go to lunch, and Sonic gets distracted while bringing her chili dogs (Sonic and the Black Knight). Sonic does eventually try to look for Tails, but is unsuccessful (Sonic the Hedgehog 4). Meanwhile, Tails escapes from his prison and finds himself on a strange island, where he lives alone and becomes self-sufficient. Then, when exploring, he finds another strange island populated by bird robots (Tails Adventure). Years pass, and civilization eventually builds a bridge to the island, naming the area where Tails settled the Mystic Ruins. [Events of Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog go here.] After Knuckles got to know the Chaotix better, he decides to join the Chaotix. Additionally, Mighty, who had been looking for new pals after Ray died, also joined the Chaotix. Eggman senses that there could be an uprising with such a large new team of heroes, so he tries to revive his failed ring bond tech from when he created Tails to stop them (Knuckles' Chaotix). (In addition, Charmy is allergic to the Combi Rings and aged 10 years because of it. This is logical.) So, meanwhile, Sonic and Tails get into an argument, and everyone sees them kicking the crap out of each other, and so they all decide to do so (Sonic the Fighters), and it escalates even more when Sonic finds a futuristic battle android from the past washed up on the beach, and teaches it to fight (Sonic Battle). Afterwards, to relieve some tension, they decide to throw a party and play some pinball (Sonic Pinball Party). However, Dr. Robotnik becomes jealous, and says "I'LL THROW A PINBALL PARTY YOU'LL NEVER FORGET!" and builds a terrible mountain fortress, and Sonic goes to stop Eggman once and for all (Sonic Spinball). Afterwards, Sonic decides the party shouldn't be over yet, so they move on to arcade games. They discover Sonic is now a celebrity and play a game that was made based off him (Sonic 1 8-bit). However, the gameplay was very off and Sonic and Tails got really angry, so they make their own game that they think will be far more popular. The game is a bomb and is completely forgotten (Sonic Eraser). Afterward, Sonic needs to let off more steam, and decides to extend the party even further (Sonic Shuffle). Sonic then realizes this need to expend energy is from not going fast enough, so he decide to start a kart racing league (Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2), and the league then becomes incredibly popular and gets many participants from other worlds (Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing). However, Sonic realizes that he'd be better off running, and decides that the league should no longer use cars. Everyone else is so disappointed at this that that they leave. Sonic then formed a new, mostly-on-foot racing league with the few remaining participants (and also he lets Amy still drive because he's pussy-whipped) (Sonic R). The league does gradually grow though (Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rivals 2). Then, once again, Sonic decides that it's too boring, and secretly makes a deal with Eggman so he can work the race into his evil schemes. However, this backfires for Sonic when Eggman forces the characters to use hoverboards (Sonic Riders). Afterwards, Eggman organizes two more of the same tournaments (Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Sonic Free Riders). Sonic decides that he just needs ONE MORE thrill, and competes in the Olympic Games (Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games). However, this weird group of people led by this weird plumber guy beat Sonic, and so he again tries to beat them at the Winter Olympics (Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games). Still, he is bested again, and goes into denial, imagining an Olympics without Mario's crew (Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games). He tries just one more time, yet still to no luck (Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games) His condition deteriorates, starting with strange alternate relivings of past adventures (Sonic Pocket Adventure), and eventually causing hallucinations of surreal, isometric landscapes, and an erasure of his abilities (Sonic Labyrinth). He eventually decides this strange, isometric world is a very bad thing, and goes on a journey of the mind, defeating his inner demons (metaphorically Eggman) and freeing his lost memories (metaphorically Flickies) (Sonic 3D Flickies' Island/Blast). To celebrate Sonic's return to sanity, Tails throws a party in the Hidden Palace, but accidentally eats the Master Emerald instead of the cake (which was green). This throws the chaos emeralds out of whack, and they scatter. Robotnik manages to retrieve the red one, which throws the whole world into chaos (Sonic Chaos). Tails is still recovering from the Master Emerald incident when Eggman starts a new scheme, so Knuckles fills in for Tails (Sonic Blast). Sonic destroys the facility, scattering the emeralds once more. However, while that's happening, Eggman convinces Knuckles that Sonic is going to steal the emeralds for himself, and enlists him to help. Tails recovers, and Sonic and Tails, once again, go after Robotnik (Sonic Triple Trouble). Eggman's next few schemes all are nearly identical and all end pretty much the exact same way (Sonic Advance 1 through 3). His repeated failures drive him mad and unleash the darker, eviller parts of Eggman's soul. He spends years studying the details of the universe, and tries again to take over the world, but this time in a much more dark, evil fashion (Sonic the Hedgehog 2006). The events of Sonic 06, correcting the future, create a SPLIT TIMELINE. The Sonic of the destroyed world explores the disfigured, distorted remnants of the decaying world (Sonic X-Treme). When things begin to be rebuilt once more, Sonic has a run-in with an alternate dimension, turning out to be the world Blaze sealed herself in at the end of Sonic 06 (Sonic Rush). Later this happens again (Sonic Rush Adventure). In the "safe" timeline, Eggman, who didn't go insane because the plot was retconned, nonetheless splits apart the world. This permanently changes the location of the world's continents (Sonic Unleashed for PS3/360). After this massive adventure, Sonic has a really long nap in which he relives the adventure he just had, though with the idiosyncracies dreams tend to have (Sonic Unleashed for Wii/PS2). Years pass (and Sonic's voice gets deeper), and Eggman builds a theme park in space to brainwash the citizens of the planet (Sonic Colorsfor Wii). The dream thing happens again (Sonic Colors for DS). After this, Sonic celebrates with his pals his 20th birthday, which is ruined by the arrival of Time Eater, an entity that was spawned from the timeline split. It scatters each and everyone of them, including younger versions of Sonic, through areas from his past. They (most likely, cause the game aint out yet silly bastards) defeat it and fix the timeline once more. (Sonic Generations PS3/360) The dream thing happens once again, this time Sonic imagines other areas from different events. (Sonic Generations 3DS) Eggman puts his next scheme into action, culminating in the events of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, and Sonic and friends about to face the new Eggman Empire is the latest point in the chronology. The original "Sonic the Hedgehog" for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is non-canon. yay/nay? Either way, this is definitive, unarguable chronology of the Sonic series. I am right.

    What is he?

I was wondering what is Shadow? An android? a genetic experiment? a clone? an alien from outer space? Since shadow t. h came out I'm a bit confused about that..

    Artificial Chaos

During SA2 I remember the Ark was full of these crafty bastards. Now I thought they were eliminated when the Ark came crashing down. Then you see them in Shadow the Hedgehog. Now I'm wondering, shouldn't something be done about these things? What if they formed together and made a Metal Chaos(which would be awesome BTW). And their origin is a bit shady as well. How did Prof. Gerald even know about Chaos?
  10. Inspired by my own topic about the connection (or lack thereof) between old and new Sonic games, i have decided to dedicate this tpic to what was once Eggman's biggest trademark (well, maybe apart from his mustache and enormous gut...). I am talking of course of his former modus operandi of turning animals into robots. As i mentioned in the other topic, that was pretty much the entire plot of the first game, and a very important part of the following 2D games (not to mention SatAM, Fleetway and Archie). Then as Sonic Adventure came along, Sonic and his pals for some reason just started acting like it wasn't a big deal that Eggman turned their animal friends into mindless mechanic drones. Which is really weird, considering that was the whole reason Sonic started his feud with Eggman in the first place. But neverthless, even though Sonic and his buds seemed to ignore the issue all together, at least the makers of the game obviously didn't, as they devoted an entire character story arch to expanding on the scenario, namely Gamma's. Thank you Sonic Team! But as the series, ahem, developed (note how i am using the term very loosely...), the whole scenario just started being ignored altogether, to the point where Eggman hardly ever even made use of the gimmick at all! How could this happen? How could Sega just completely let go of one of the series most important aspects (at least as far as story goes)? What makes me madder about this even more so than the fact that the series lost such an important story aspect is that Eggman lost such an important character aspect. Now, in terms of personality, i realize that Eggman has developed an incredible lot during the 3D era, and that "turning animals into robots" can hardly be called a personality trait at all. But i am not at all talking about personality here, i am talking about image. The land of pop culture is drowning in "mad scientists trying to take over the world", and in order for one of these characters to stand out, they need something iconic about them, be it in their looks, personality, modus operandi, ect. And Eggman's "turning animals into robots"-thing was a perfect such stand-out feature. During the early 90's, "Dr.Robotnik" was probably the name most closely associated with the standard sci-fi scenario of people being turned into robots. And the specific idea of turning animals into robots was pretty much unique to the character, and fitted perfectly with his image as a "anti-environmentalist" villain. But now without that famous gimmick, what makes Eggman stand out in the evil-scientist crowd? I mean, of course we fans can still find a lot in the characters personality and such that makes him special to us, but the average gamerprobably isn't even aware of the "moral ambiguity" the character can be said to express, or any of his more redeeming qualities. To the gaming world at large, Eggman is just another completely generic evil scientist without his trademark scheme by his side... In short; i want Eggman to turn critters into clunkers again!

    Through a shattered glass...

I've been thinking about the whole Blaze=alternate universe Sonic theory, given it's suprising(Well, suprising to me, anyway ) popularity on this forum. Off the top of my head, the evidence for this theory includes: -The obvious one, Blaze's arch enemy being a more cold and calculating version of Eggman. -Blaze having roughly the same role as Sonic, but with a somewhat darker, less freedom oriented bent to it. -Blaze being just as passionate as Sonic...but being very reserved about that passion, in contrast to the way Sonic casually lets his emotions run free. -Marine coming across as a more emotionally charged, less mature/competent version of Tails. Likewise, her friendship with Blaze being a somewhat more dysfunctional version of the sibling thing Sonic and Tails have. -The Sol Emeralds look just like the original Mega Drive Emeralds, before, post Sonic-Adventure, the Chaos Emeralds started to all look like the Super Emeralds from Sonic 3 and Knuckles. -Blaze runs the way Sonic used to, with her arms drawn into her body and her fists pointed forward, instead of that bird-run thing Sonic does now. At any rate, if we took this to the logical extreme, and Sonic and Blaze find out they really are...well, technically the same person...how do you think they would react? How about Tails and Marine if they found out the same thing about themselves?
