Yep, it is happening. A Phantasy Star Online 2 event for Sonic in Japan. The event starts June 12th, and Shadow will also appear in this event, among other things that are going to happen.

So, what do you all think?

Ugh...

Rather than turn this into a rant thread, I'll just say that SEGA's treatment of this game is appalling. If you know what's good for you, avoid this game, regardless of a Sonic collab or not.

A game that I have promised myself to never bother trying again, but this is cute! I dig it.

I was just about to get into it for the first time because it looks and seems like it plays amazing to my tastes...

Is it really that bad? Cuz I'm a sucker for sci-fi settings and free movement like this, and I don't want to go in and be disappointed for not heeding you.

At its best, it's... fine.

PSO2 New Genesis (that I'll call NGS) is a completely new game built on top of the classic PSO2 from 2012. Its main gimmick is being the first open world PSO game, and clearly ripping off Zelda BotW in the process while getting none of its charm. When you strip away the gloss of the open world, NGS is shockingly dull and missing vital gameplay features that its predecessors had, and contemporary rivals have. And where prior games allowed you to completely switch up your class, build, and play style, NGS only plays one way for everything, and tries to cover up its flat combat by burying it in a thousand particles and effects equivalent to a flashbang.

Among other things, NGS is home to an utterly abysmal story that the dev team desperately want you to care about, an overbearing focus on fashion gacha to dress your character up as a cute girl, and that the NGS team have clearly lost all focus and direction for the game; These days, even the open world aspect of the game is being neglected and forgotten.

Like I said, I REALLY don't want to turn this into a rant thread. I have not even scratched the surface of issues. So let me sum it up as such: It is extremely obvious that SEGA treats this game as nothing more than passive income.

I was not around to play PSO2 in its prime. But still being accessible through NGS, I prefer the "old" PSO2 far more.

So basically, I should treat this as a very cheap thrill for a very short time and move on to something better once the fun wears off?

Cuz I’m only gonna try it for the open world and mechanics to see how it’s like. I ain’t investing in the extra stuff.

Yeah, cheap thrills are all it has. At least it's free.

Is it bad that I was not even aware that this gam3 even exists? Lol
