It's Official, Sonic X Shadow Generations Releases October 25th!

For the past few years, Summer Game Fest has been a favorite place for SEGA to release some Sonic game trailers. This has been no different, though things were somewhat spoiled the previous night, due in large part to some leaks. Nevertheless, SEGA has debuted a new trailer for Sonic X Shadow Generations that has revealed some more gameplay and finally announced the release date.

So, what's in the trailer? Well, we got to see Shadow the Hedgehog with wings. But we do get to see Shadow speeding through new zones such as Kingdom Valley and Rail Canyon. As for Sonic, we got to see him in remastered versions of levels from zones such as Seaside Hill, Speed Highway and Crisis City.

Of course, a new Sonic console release from SEGA means that there are special editions of the game and pre-order bonuses, and this is no different. If you pre-order the game, you'll get a Sonic Adventure skin for Sonic and Gerald Robotnik's journal, which details Shadow's creation. There will also be DLC this holiday with a Terios skin for Shadow, a new level, a digital art book and official soundtrack, and more!

As for the release date, prior to today, it was slated for this fall. However, thanks to the new trailer, we now know that Sonic X Shadow Generations will be releasing on October 25th, 2024. SEGA loves late October and November for Sonic console releases, so this isn't necessarily a surprising thing. Still, we have official confirmation of when it will be launching, so if you've been financially planning for this game's release, obviously that's going to be a big help.

That all said, this month is only just beginning! Summer Game Fest Play Days is now getting underway, and it will last for the rest of the weekend. Not only that, but Takashi Iizuka is available for interviews there, so he may have some interesting stuff to say! And don't forget that a Nintendo Direct is supposed to happen this month, so we might see Sonic X Shadow Generations there. So, you'll want to stay tuned to Sonic Stadium throughout the month, because today's Sonic X Shadow Generations trailer might just be the start of a busy month for Sonic fans! In the meantime, check out the trailer:

Some quick thoughts

  • Wait, there are Chao even in the thumbnail of the Trailer Video...I'm guessing we're going to have to find them at some point, huh?
  • So cool to see Rail Canyon and Kingdom Valley again. Train Zones FTW!
  • The Chaos Control ability to move while time is stopped seems like a cool upgrade of the Slow ability from Superstars
  • Seems like Black Doom is trying to turn Shadow into himself...

I like how the Terios skin (Terios, if that is how you spell it, was what Shadow was supposed to be in Sonic Adventure 2 during development) is going to be available. First, a Feels the Rabbit skin for Sonic in Sonic Superstars, and now this? Wow.

I can't wait to play the Kingdom Valley level in this game!

I mean... as surprising as this is, it shouldn't be. We already got a rabbit skin for Sonic in Superstars that was based on a deleted character's concept art; why wouldn't they do the same thing with Shadow?

(Shiny Gems then proceeds to beat me to posting this while I watch the trailer)

...too slow, I guess?

What little gameplay they showed didn't really enthrall me. It looks as janky as Forces and Cyberspace.

I'm intrigued by the story elements, and I can't deny that the level choices are right up my street. Rail Canyon/Bullet Station and Kingdom Valley should have been the choices from their respective games.

Terios skin is a neat idea. The design looks bloody awful, but that's nothing new.

What's not neat however is locking a skin behind the digital deluxe edition. That shit was uncool with Colours Ultimate and Superstars and it's still bad here. But worst of all is the "early access" bullshit. No, you're not getting the game three days early. The game is out on October 22nd and everyone not getting the Digital Deluxe edition is arbitrarily made to wait three extra days. Fuck this shit.

I'm shocked by the Terios thing. That's such a strange, deep-cut reference and I love it.

Also, skill points? I'm interested to see how Shadow will work in this game. I guess you can upgrade him throughout the game and unlock more of his Black Arms abilities?

ALSO, GERALD'S JOURNAL!

ALSO ALSO, MORE CUTSCENES AND LEVELS!!

ALSO ALSO ALSO, OPEN HUB WORLD!!!

That was not me who posted that myself, but a staff member. But...

Here are my actual thoughts and what I said about Terios.

That was what I was referencing, actually. Although the way I worded it was probably confusing. (This is nothing new on my end; there's a reason I heavily empathize with Antoine.)

Love the way this topic title cuts off so perfectly on the front page.

Just wanted to let you know what the case was.

But yeah, first, Feels, and now Terios. I wonder what is next? Venice the Mink?

In a way, yes. That was the character Silver was going to be before he actually became Silver for Sonic 06.

Sonic and Shadow speed onto PlayStation consoles this October, offering players high-speed action and platforming challenges only possible in the Sonic universe.

Today, we unveiled the release date and pre-order information for Sonic x Shadow Generations, the Sonic the Hedgehog platformer remastering the beloved Sonic Generations with modernized visuals and extra bonus content, while adding a brand-new journey featuring never-before-seen abilities for the Ultimate Life Form – Shadow the Hedgehog.

The trailer released today shows a glimpse of Sonic and Shadow’s respective adventures and intense challenges, including a first look at exciting new levels and Shadow’s newfound powers. Sonic x Shadow Generations is sure to be a high-speed, heroic experience.

The return of Shadow also brings the return of his nemesis, Black Doom, who threatens to take over the world once more. You must harness Shadow’s new powers and journey into the past in his own standalone campaign to battle enemies and complete blistering platforming challenges to thwart Black Doom’s evil plans. Players will witness Shadow’s dark origins and explore an all-new hub world inspired by the open-zone gameplay of Sonic Frontiers by gaining new powers and uncovering hidden secrets throughout the area.

Sonic Generations also receives a graphical upgrade and remains a greatest-hits collection for Sonic fans, old and new, combining nostalgic 3D and 2D versions of Sonic stages from throughout the generations with upgraded visuals and cinematics. You can also enjoy new collectibles, bonus content, and more, including a Chao rescue mission in every level and the return of high-energy pinball gameplay in the Casino Nights Zone.

Sonic x Shadow Generations will be released on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, coming in both a standard and a Digital Deluxe version. The Digital Deluxe edition gives fans the chance to play the game three days early. It also offers iconic extra music tracks from Sonic and Shadow’s earlier games, a Terios skin based on Shadow’s original concept, behind-the-scenes art, an additional Shadow level and skin, and more.

You can also pre-order Sonic x Shadow Generations ahead of launch to receive a legacy skin for Sonic based on his look from Sonic Adventure. In addition, players who pre-order the Physical Day One Edition will receive Gerald Robotnik’s Journal, a 28-page logbook recording Gerald’s innermost thoughts and drawings while creating Shadow and the Ark Space Station – a must-have for fans hoping to learn more about Shadow’s backstory! Exclusive to PlayStation, players who buy the game on PS4 or PS5 will also receive bonus extended prologue animations with never-before-seen deleted scenes.

This ultimate celebration of Sonic and Shadow gaming is on its way and brings unique challenges like never before. Pre-order Sonic x Shadow Generations today and stay tuned for more to come later this year.

Looks like I was right about that Chao finding Quest

It's nice to have a Sonic game with unambiguously nice graphics again.

My key worry is how much jank from Frontiers will carry over into Shadow Generations. The homing attack seems slow in 3D, but it's suddenly snappy in the 2D sections? Whatever, man. At the very least, I *really* dig the stage choices this go around. I hope there's pretty good story implications behind the selections. The story as a whole seems really intriguing.

I guess they're also saving the open zone gameplay for later? I can't help but feel like that's what they ought to have led with, though.

That does make sense to be next, considering Feels and Terios have already had their due.

This trailer made me more annoyed than excited to be completely honest, and the article on Playstation's blog is just giving me dread. https://blog.playstation.com/2024/06/07/sonic-x-shadow-generations-launches-october-25/

"Exclusive to PlayStation, players who buy the game on PS4 or PS5 will also receive bonus extended prologue animations with never-before-seen deleted scenes." Seriously?? Console-exclusive content?

AND a digital deluxe version??

AND Gerald's journal is ONLY included with physical pre orders?? They could have at least made a digital version for the digital purchases!

Yeah, I can see a Venice skin for Silver in a future Sonic game.

JESUS, a Terios skin? That's a deep cut! SEGA probably knows who they're marketing this game to, I suppose!

I really like the sound of the new features mentioned in this - a more open hub world, Chao rescue missions, more collectibles (it has been 13 years since Generations, even, it makes sense)... wonder if there'll be stages referencing more recent games too, like Forces?

Strangely nostalgic to see Kingdom Valley in there too....... I really don't like Sonic 06, but... there's something tingling. Maybe it's because I remember what this website was like when that game came out!

New stages referencing more recent games? Interesting...

Also, I wanted Kingdom Valley to be a playable stage in Sonic Generations. Though this is an upgraded version of the game, if I have the words down right, it is good to see that it is still coming, nonetheless to this version of the game.

...this is both really cool and utter garbage at the same time.

- Really want Gerald's journal - so definitely going for the physical edition for Switch!

- Terios skin, an additional skin, and A WHOLE LEVEL are digital exclusives??? I'd have to buy the game twice to get both??

- Extended prologue and deleted scenes are exclusive for Playstation????? I'm a casual gamer and keep up with nostalgic properties like Sonic, which is mostly Nintendo for me. I'd have to buy another system???

Just... there are no words for how cool all this stuff is, and how utterly stupid all these exclusives are distributed. I'm not buying the game twice - I'm missing out on Terios and the other level. I'm not buying a system I won't use just for cutscenes so I'm watching them on Youtube I guess.

What's here is cool, everything else is trash. GG Sega.

Terios skin? Man that’s an insane deep cut. Glad to see Rail Canyon is making a comeback, it’s always nice to see some Sonic Heroes representation.

And a hub world that’s open zone like Frontiers? I’m so excited for this game man, it’s insane.

So does anyone think that we’ll get only one level per game like in base generations or will we have more than one per game since Shadow wasn’t in as many games as Sonic?

Posted (edited)

Surprised there actually seems to be new content for the Sonic Generations half of the game. I wonder if we'll finally get more than one or two skins this time around.
