How long can the Paramount-verse last?

Just curious what others think, since there's all this talk of the movies becoming "Avengers-level events" and whatnot. It sounds like Paramount wants this universe to last a long time.

But with 3 being based around SA2; arguably the most popular/beloved game by modern fans, it feels like a be-all end-all premise. Sure they could adapt SA1 (even though it'd feel strange to do it AFTER SA2) But beyond that; and with the series being mostly grounded to earth, what else could they really do without making them entirely CGI films set in Sonic's world?

I'd honestly be surprised to see them go past 6 films; if that.

  • The title was changed to How long can the Paramount-verse last?

Films, Maybe 5......maybe. Amy being kidnapped by Metal and the location of Little planet with time stones could drive a 4th film.

A 5th film could tie it all together with SOMETHING like 06, Frontiers...or (gasp!) FORCES (!!!) In fact that would work well....bad future etc with time stones is eggman conquered earth like in forces. Cliffhanger at the end of movie 4 leading in to a concludi g 5th

Series. Maybe 2 more spin offs. One being Shadow based, over 2 / 3 series and inc Black Doom after sonic X shadow has brought him back. The Second could be an "adventures" anthology where games like Unleashed, Lost World, even  Colours could be adapted over 2/3 episodes with 12 eps per series. By which point it will be 2030 and momentum would have all but gone and the "franchise" will need a break

It'll go until it stops being profitable enough to keep doing.

And then comes the inevitable reboot. Get ready for Sonic the Hedgehog, coming out in 2030! Who's looking forward to Green Hill Zone?

Regarding my opinion though, I think really either the third film or anytime after is when the 'verse will fizzle out, since they'll almost definitely make another. Even disregarding it being Sonic, lots of film franchises start to decline in both quality and consumer/fan interest by or post the third film. Even film series that are still successful by that point (not counting reboots) are usually subject to more critical views by the critics and viewers alike, a good example being the Star Wars films. Focusing mainly on the prequel trilogy here, despite the three being successful, they were still looked at a bit harsher back when they released, and even in present times. This comes from both the inherent flaws of the films, the inevitable comparisons being made with what came before, etc. There's also the case that it can suffer from overexposure (seen recently with Star Wars and Marvel), that is if they pump out multiple spin offs at once and not just, like, one during the times between the films' releases.

Well, they have already copyrighted adaptions of some of those games, but again, that is if they make it that far.

Kinda hope it ends this year, so we're one step closer to animated reboot in 10 years.

But yeah,  I give it 6 movies tops, plus Shadow spin-off in one form or the other.

Probably one of the biggest problems working against the films. They've done their best with the CGI X live action idea, and it does admittedly look cool seeing things depicted in a somewhat realistic away. But eventually, they're going to reach a point where, if they want to keep adapting things, thy're going to have to break away more from the live action, in which case, it defeats the purpose of it being the basis to begin with, regardless of whether it's liked or not. With a franchise mostly submerged in spectacles and fantasy elements, you would think an animated adaption would've been the way to go for a movie. But then again, Sonic, being a franchise that, since 1998/1999 has included more realistic elements (including the use of humans other than Eggman/Robotnik), is probably one of the few such franchises that could be adapted into a live action style (regarding similar franchises like Mario, whom could only really work in an animated form).

As long as Jim Carrey continues to play Eggman IMO. He really completes the films - they wouldn't be the same without him. I'm guessing 3 is gonna be the last one he stars in; we're already extremely lucky that he decided to come back for this one, so him returning for a fourth movie is a fat chance.

If asking how long it can last, then yeah, it's pretty much decided by profit and the will of the people making them to continue making them. But that's the boring answer. :P I'll bet on...Let's say 4 films and 2 miniseries total before it all comes crashing down.

I don't think this is going to be much of a barrier because of how loosely based around the games the films are. Thus far, they've been coming up with mostly original story lines that will make references to the game lore but aren't beholden to it. I don't doubt the writers' ability to keep coming up with new stories as long as they need to.

That aside...Unleashed would make sense if they were going the route you're suggesting. I'd love to see that, actually.

The Chaotix would make a good detective series/crime comedy movie, but with a Penguins of Madagascar tone. Probably best to introduce them in a movie first though.

I wonder that too. I do say once they run out of games to adapt they could either try to extend the licensing to adapt later/lesser-known games, or start making more original content, though the original content may end up being more Bayformers-like in terms of execution. An “animated reboot”/“apology movie” isn’t a guaranteed success either; the Smurf “apology movie” bombed and there has been little activity from the Smurfs since.

True, true (regarding the Transformers comparison). I mean, isn't thst also headed by the same company (Paramount)?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a spin off Smurfs cartoon currently running on Nickelodeon? I think they even announced a movie for it.

Imagine a Sonic movie animated in the style of the CD intro

I don’t think the new cartoon series is directly connected to the apology movie.
