No, this is not an April Fool’s joke.

In a March 31 interview with Access Hollywood, Jim Carrey revealed that he was likely retiring from acting after Sonic 2. When asked what his plans were after Sonic 2, Carrey said “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends, if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

So while Carrey does not rule out an eventual return to acting, it appears he’s ready to step away unless a really good script comes his way. He went on to elaborate on his decision, “I really like my quiet life, and I really like putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like - and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists - I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

You can find his answer starting at 4:20 in the interview:

Among other things, this does put his future in the Sonic movie franchise up in the air. Does this mean he won’t be back for Sonic 3? Will he be recast? Or will this end up meaning nothing and he’ll be back for further Sonic movie entries? Will Robotnik as a whole be written out?

It should be noted that, historically, Carrey rarely did sequels, making Sonic 2 something of an anomaly in his career. Whatever the case, Sonic 3 is coming in two years, so we’ll know the answer soon enough.

Now, call me naive, but I have to imagine, HAVE TO, that this is not the first place he has brought this up. I just can’t see Paramount announcing a third movie and TV series without at least making sure the core characters would be in, and if not, start working on a plan to work around that.

Then again, I don’t know Carrey, maybe this all new. He’s a hard man to really pin down.

You can always call in another Batman villain, I hear Danny DeVito can play a mean Eggman.

But seriously, great to see he stuck around for the sequel, it just wouldn’t be the same otherwise.

If a recast happens get Kelsey Grammar he would make a great Eggman!

I have a beautiful little movie for you. Go look up a fairly recent film called “Money Plane.” It’s utter trash. He’s great in it.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the first Sonic movie the first time in 4 years or so Carrey went back to acting? Weird that he is considering retiring again.

Time for a possible recast I guess.

Agent Stone could take over the villain roll, or perhaps they start going down the villain of the week list.

I think Carrey will stay with Eggman, he said he likes how he's characterised

Villain-of-the-week has been my thought at the moment. I’m still under the impression that the next movie is going to be Adventure 2, because sure, why not, it’s not what I want, but it makes sense on paper.

And I’m trying to pick apart if you can tell a version of that story, but without Robotnik directly… and I think you probably could. The core of Shadow’s story is, I hate what the world did to me, and I will take vengeance by destroying everything. And you don’t entirely need a Robotnik to facilitate that.

Anything beyond that, you might have to get more creative, but I think they could realistically have that third movie without if they had to.

I’m 100% on board with Agent Stone taking on the mantle of Eggman. Lee is a fantastic actor and I’m sure can rock a moustache.

Having just watched the film, and without spoiling anything, I can see them working on a way to do Sonic 3 without Eggman. And I can also see them doing it with him, apparently he was a little ambiguous about it at the blue carpet event.

After that...either Agent Stone takes over for him, or they recast him, if they wanna keep doing a cinematic universe with Sonic. It'd be exceedingly hard to do it without Eggman.

He seems to be leaving the door open to continue acting in some things. He seemed to really enjoy the process of working on these movies, and it's apparently given him and his grandson something to bond over. It wouldn't surprise me if that's enough to get him to reprise his role again at least one more time, but who knows.

Regardless, this would be a hell of a film to end a career as iconic as his on. I can see the temptation to go out on a high.

What if the plot twist is Carrey's Robotnik is actually Gerald? I can't remember if they have him a first name in the movies, but since they're not following chronologically, it could work.
