This topic was good and got turned into How Does Sonic's World Work? TailsTube's First Episode Finally Gives an Answer at some point.

They're probably bringing it up now because they plan to reintroduce non-Eggman humans to the series, and don't want to have to justify it every time they appear in a "Sonic's world"-styled location like Green Hill Zone or whatever. Eggman's a mad scientist and can hop between dimensions easily, and Sonic and pals can just use Chaos Control or special ring portals or whatever.

But the pink-haired woman from Frontiers(?) - and presumably any other humans in that game - are probably just normal people, and it's easier to say "they took a boat" than "they went through an interdimensional portal" for how they got to the game's setting on the Starfall Islands, which would likely have been categorized as a "Sonic's world"-type location under the two-worlds lens.

Ironically, going from the Lost World/Forces with animal people to Frontiers' realistic style and reintroducing humans would have fit Two Worlds. Starfall Islands is just on the human world. And at the same time there's a movie franchise where Sonic is an alien that can use rings to go between his world and Earth, introducing kids to the franchise through that idea.

Or both the animal and human worlds. An amalgamation of sorts. Actually, assuming humans appear in Frontiers alongside Islanders (How I want to refer anthropomorphic animals from this point on). This could be an ideal place for both to coexist in some capacity.

It may or may not. We still have zero information so far. Though personally I'd be fine with no human presence again.

In any case, character-acting-wise, JP Tails was acting very odd at times to me. The NA personality directly put on him (for some scenes they couldn't edit away) was not natural.

I'd say it looks much more like a human world setting actually. Realistic environments and modestly exaggerated ruins. Either way the number of worlds is only going to make a difference if both humans and animals (beyond the main cast) are significantly involved.

So what we’ve learned is that Sonic & friends aren’t weird superheroes or science experiments or aliens (except for Shadow who is all of those), they’re just segregated minorities. Yay?

I kid, but honestly I kind of preferred when I thought it was just inconsistent continuity as to whether humans or animal people lived on Sonic’s world. While this answers some questions it raises a lot more weird ones. If this is the new canon I hope in the next few games we see at least a smattering of both types of “people” actually intermingling even if it’s only a couple minor npcs of one type when the vast majority is the other type.

Sonic X first introduced the two-world concept back in the 2000s, and it didn't affect the games' lore. The movie franchise is a totally different continuity, and Sega isn't creatively involved with the movies.

Also, according to the leaks, we are going to have fantastic environments on Sonic Frontiers, too. This is not confirmed, but it's still possible.

I don't know, man.

SA2 had weird cartoony locations like Pumpkin Hill, which to me look like they'd be right at home in the "animal world." We also had a GUN base in Sonic Rush, not too far from Vanilla's house and surrounded by zones that wouldn't be out of place in a classic Sonic game.

I feel like there's always been a little overlap between the realistic and the fantastical environmental designs, as well as humans and animals living and operating near each other.

I'm hoping Frontiers does have NPCs of both types, since it is an open-world game. Towns to explore and people to talk to - both human and animal alike - would be a fun way to bring some variety to the world.

Yes! The classic trilogy also had "realistic" kind of environments, specially Sonic 3&K. Not all of them were colorful and fantastic. The Adventure era isn't so different from the original trilogy in this aspect.

Meh. I was hoping Sega just retconned humans besides Dr. Eggman. I never liked there being human characters (other than Dr. Eggman, of course). It is awkward and out of place. There has never been another human character in the series since Unleashed and I hope it stays that way (in all media - games, comics, and such). Human characters are boring. I want there to only be animals.

I was actually okay with two worlds, it worked out well for me once I did some thinking on it. Who knows? Maybe the humans of Adventure, Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 exist on Earth, while the humans we saw first and last in Unleashed are native to Sonic’s world? Though seeing footage of Adventure as part of Sonic’s world does make a major wrinkle to that idea…

I too enjoyed the video though, had a lot of nice nods, and the one about whether Amy is Sonic’s sister or girlfriend may have been a nod to Sonic Underground, given Sonia’s colors and all.

Now I eagerly await to see what they say on Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic’s differences. Hopefully they go with what Forces established, as that works the best, with Classic Sonic’s adventures having been experienced by Modern Sonic in his world with some differences up to a point. After all, if Mania happened in Modern Sonic’s history, how come no one remembers the Phantom Ruby and how Eggman got sucked into a portal in the encore portion? How the heck did the cast gain colored irises? Why does Modern Eggman differ so much from Classic Eggman if they’re the same person in every way, just that Classic Eggman is the younger version of Eggman? Why do Vector and Espio look so drastically different? Why does Amy look so different? For that matter, where’s Modern Mighty and Modern Ray? Modern Bark? Modern Bean? Modern Fang? Given Sega’s statement that those five are Classic exclusive, and we won’t be seeing their modern counterparts any time soon, I would expect that Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic do indeed exist in two different universes. It also would easily explain the differences in their appearances. Time will tell though…

What I'm thrilled is that ol' Dr. E's not the only human on Sonic's world. From what I've seen, humans on Sonic's world treat anthropomorphic animal characters like any other human. Any people I draw as caricatures whether human or anthropomorphic animal are to be treated as any human. Like when Walt Disney forbids Mickey to eat cheese, (except on a pizza or a sandwich?), but they never listen after Disney died. Even Carl Banks wanted to include humans in his Donald Duck comics, like they did in the cartoons. Even they were on "Quack Pack".

I NEVER want to see the two types intermingle. It’ll look completely ridiculous, just like every hipster imaginable taking selfies and doing parkour in GHZ.

But f**k what we think/want, isn’t that right Iizuka?

I stopped caring about Sega giving official lore info after the moon showed up intact in Shadow the Hedgehog. I choose to follow the lore my own way.

In any case, what’s up with that artwork of Cream yanking Tails’ tail?? I guess she stopped caring about manners after she was denied entry in TSR.

Eggman being the only human would make Eggman "awkward and out of place".  I still don't understand the push-back humans in Sonic get.  Other than 2006 humans, those were definitely out of place.

I apologize if this is old ground but I haven't seen anyone mention this. I just listened to the Bumblekast for March 28th and someone asked about the one world thing with regards to Forces.

They asked if it's all one world then how did the humans react or respond to Eggman taking over the world in Forces.

The answer given was "#Knowing Smile... seriously, you won't have to wait too long to find out."

Since Ian is also a contributor to Tailstube I think using it to help clarify some small things might be what he's hinting at. Maybe not but I was surprised to hear it.

Then again, I don't want to assume anything either.

Where is March 28th's Bumblekast? Ian's Youtube channel is out of date, with the latest episode being two months ago.

For me, the latest video on that channel is from two months ago, so I don't think it's updated as often as the Podbean page, which is up to date.

Not a problem though! The podbean page for the March 28th episode is here: https://www.podbean.com/media/share/dir-z7hp6-1325f676?utm_campaign=w_share_ep&utm_medium=dlink&utm_source=w_share

Haven't seen that, but would probably worth placing that on a post indicating the main points.

That's really weird. I can see every video on YouTube. Did you sort by most recent?

No more "two worlds" eh?

That's good. Now if they can undo the "the classic games takes place in a different dimension from the modern games" nonsense then maybe I'll actually start giving a shit about the Sonic universe again.

I think it basically did that too.

Tails recounted meeting Sonic on Westside Island (i.e. the events of Sonic 2) and showed a map of the 8-bit Sonic 1's South Island during the show.

It's (mostly) one timeline. The only "different dimension" seems to be an offshoot from Generations to Mania, but not the entirety of the classic games.

I compared the screenshot of that Sonic Generations cutscene seen in the Tails Tube with the original one.

There are some people who noticed that they are slightly different.

I doubt this is related with Sonic Frontiers, but the screen is actually different for real: it's not just those dynamic lines applied on top of the screen, it's the lighting that's different, the gloss and the colors, and even the paper seems to have some transparency (light seem to filter through it a bit) that was completely absent in the original version of the cutscene.

I guess if this is an hint at Generations Ultimate being in the work, or maybe they just photoshopped the screenshot for some reason. In case this is something real, I tend to think of it being a port of the game and not a full remake or something bigger, because the effort seems very low, they just changed the lighting engine or the materials, and left everything else the same, frame sync aside (there are small differences in Amy's hand position and the moment when Tails' eyes are fully open, but still a very minor timing thing).

If SEGA really wants to make more "Ultimate" versions of games, I also guess if Unleashed is on the way as well, since there's that "new character" thing, and it seems to be a concept art from Unleashed.

It's possible that it's all just some beta material and it ends up being absolutely nothing though, I'm not trying to hype up people.
