If a Game Gear that fits in the palm of your hand isn’t your cup of tea, don’t worry, because it looks like more SEGA mini consoles are on the horizon! Yosuke Okunari, SEGA’s Classic Hardware Producer, talked to Famitsu about what could be next. While he wouldn’t name anything in particular, he said anything anyone has imagined (or not imagined) is being considered.
He also said that unlike the Game Gear Micros, which were made for the Japanese market, the next project should be global in scope. Though due to the size and expense of such a project, it likely won’t be available for at least two years, so don’t expect anything in 2021. He then went on to say that for the next project, they will be considering something like the Mega Drive Mini (so not like the Game Gear Micro or Astro City Mini), and any console from the SG-1000 to SEGA Dreamcast could be chosen.

What’s that? “This doesn’t have anything to do with Sonic the Hedgehog,” you say?
What you are about to bear witness to has everything to do with Sonic. In fact, this is about something much, much bigger than Sonic, for had it not been for this man, the Blue Blur — no, SEGA as a whole — would not be around today.
Everybody by now knows the story, the so near yet so far Sonic game which never was. Since November, a user by the name of JollyRodger managed to acquire a build of the game and since then has been trying to get it running on modern stand alone PC’s. A Sonic X-Treme promo video from E3 1996 hit the net yesterday, courtesy of YouTube user ArgyleDX. Some of the footage you may recognise from an off-screen recording of the SEGA Saturn game’s E3 1996 trailer, while some of it you may have not seen before. The video is very much in line with SEGA’s classic advertising combat against then rival Nintendo, who had their big N64 launch title Super Mario 64 on the way that year.
Sonic the Hedgehog co-creator Hirokazu Yasuhara has officially joined the ranks of Nintendo, Sega’s old business rival in the 90’s, settling into NoA’s Nintendo Software Technology branch. While both Nintendo and Yasuhara have indeed confirmed the move, no details as to what is Yasuhara’s new role have been revealed yet.
To Sonic and Sega fans, Yasuhara is best recognized for creating Sonic the Hedgehog alongside Yuji Naka and Naoto Ōshima, working within SEGA as director, designer, and game planner for the Genesis and Saturn entries of the series. While he is known for his work from Sonic 1 through Sonic R, his portfolio also extends to other popular games such as Naughty Dog’s Jak and Daxter and Uncharted franchises, as well as the Pacman 30th Anniversary arcade game for Namco-Bandai.

SSMB member MarcelloF was checking out Sonic X-treme stuff on the Spriters Resource website and found a character called Chaz’s sprites there that were ripped from the game. If the character is an animal it has no obvious similarity to any species, it look’s like a cross between an armadillo and a badger if you ask me. YouTube user ojdon has come across 2 clips from an unknown French source of some of SEGA’s booths at E3 1996 including the Sonic Xtreme booth, the NiGHTS into Dreams booth(with some nice rings from the game around it) and the Bug Too! booth. Correct me if I’m wrong but as far as I’m aware footage of these booths has never been seen until now so it’s pretty cool to get a look at them at long last.
We all know about SEGA’s crazy TV commercials in the UK and US, but little is really known about the ones that ran in Japan (outside of the Sonic ones included in Sonic Jam). Recently, a SEGA Saturn fansite uncovered a bunch of Japanese adverts featuring a weird karate hero called ‘Segata Sanshiro’, and one of them is advertising Sonic R!
Sega Saturn owners the world over were looking for a reason why they parted with their Mega Drives and Sonic games, and got a Saturn instead. Well, Sega listened to them, and gave them…. a compilation CD. But not just any CD. This gave the post-Mega Drive owners a chance to play their fave Sonic games again. Sonic R is exactly what it says on the tin – a racing game. Only… the ‘Racing’ is abbreviated with an ‘R’ and it’s not in a tin. It sees you take a whole cast of Sonic Team characters out on a racing revolution! A competition is being held on Sonic’s home grounds, and the blue blur just can’t help but notice it. Sonic can’t turn something like this down. Tails joins him in signing up for the competition, however it they soon find out that it was all just a ploy set out by Dr Robotnik to trap the blue hedgehog.
