  1. A character so nice, they're releasing him twice. Last Saturday, Sonic Speed Simulator received an extensive update giving players not only the chance to explore City Escape as their favorite characters, but they could also collect Movie Sonic, Tails and Knuckles! But just when you thought the collaboration between Roblox, SEGA and Paramount is all done, Speed Simulator decided they had one more feather in the cap. Literally. It's a cap. Well, a hat. Sonic Speed Simulator devs Gamefam posted on the game's official Twitter this image with one simple statement: With the Knuckles show releasing this weekend, this coincides well with the next Speed Simulator update which happens every Saturday at 12pm EST. Surely this means this weekend's latest character is Knuckles explicitly from the Knuckles TV Series, donning his iconic cowboy hat previously seen in the Sonic OVA, and the Treasure Hunter Knuckles character alt. Will you be logging on to complete your movie Sonic collection? Or are you dreading the prospect of potentially having to collect 500 dumbbells again? Sonic Speed Simulator is playable through Roblox on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and mobile. Knuckles streams on Paramount+ worldwide on April 26th.

  3. Previously, we reported a mysterious ring portal opening up in Sonic Speed Simulator, advertising not only the arrival of a new zone: City Escape, but an upcoming collaboration with Paramount for the Knuckles series. But we didn't know exactly who, or what are the rewards for this event aside from one leak of Movie Sonic's model. But now, the curtain has been raised on this mysterious event as Testing servers opened tonight, and as we can see, the gang's all here, ready to team up with their mainline and Prime counterparts! That's right, two entire event tracks are arriving at once that not only reward you Movie Sonic, but Movie Tails and Knuckles too, along with a hearty helping of other goodies! Earn powerful exotic Chao to give you an edge in levelling up, lightning trails to give every single one of your characters the iconic Movie Sonic electric crackle, and up to 4000 Red Star Rings! That's enough for 4 characters from the Red Star Ring shop, or to max out and fuse four pets! In addition, all Movie characters have a unique gameplay mechanic. Following in the wake of the Super characters' flight, and the Riders characters' new double jump ability, the Movie cast get a new trait: Electric Boost. New heroes from another world have arrived to the land of Sonic Speed Simulator! For the first time, the Sonic Movie characters are coming to console and PC in celebration of the Knuckles show! Collect Movie Sonic, Tails and Knuckles and have them join forces with their mainline and Shatterverse friends by exploring and completing objectives in the all new zone: City Escape!
  6. Paramount, SEGA and Roblox are teaming up to promote the upcoming Knuckles show by bringing the movie Sonic characters out of the silver screen and onto home consoles and PC via Sonic Speed Simulator! In the game's Green Hill Zone lobby, players are noticing a large standee advertising not only the Knuckles show, but the impending arrival of a brand new world to explore: City Escape! The portal to enter isn't ready yet, but the content is set to reveal itself this Saturday at 12pm EST, like all weekly Speed Simulator updates. Or if you're impatient, this Friday night on the test servers. I managed to waltz in myself to take a look. And yup, things are falling into place for this weekend. What SHOULD we expect though? While no official statement is given, considering it is a new world, the likely outcome is an event made to encourage you to explore this City Escape. Destroy Badniks, collect rings, Chaos Orbs, etc. to complete objectives. With it, you usually earn trails, Chao, maybe an exclusive Extreme Gear, and then by the end of it all? A new character to play as! Naturally, one would assume the new character will be Movie Knuckles. While that's very much still in the cards, dataminers managed to uncover one character we know for sure is coming! Spotted by Twitter user WowItsRG, Movie Sonic is making his debut! With it, Sonic Speed Simulator is becoming quite the crossover. Now you can play as over 100 characters from across Sonic's history. From modern, classic, Prime and now the movies, all we really need now is Boom and we're golden. Will you be logging in this weekend to escape from the city with Movie Knuckles and friends? 12. In what is perhaps one of the strangest Sonic partnerships we've seen this year, SEGA has announced that it is teaming up with both Roblox and Amazon to offer limited edition digital goods for the build-a-game platform in exchange for various gift card purchases made via the online retailer. Crucially, your free virtual gift will entirely depend on the level of spend you're prepared to make in the name of Roblox. If you sacrifice between $10-$20 (or £10-£20) you'll unlock an Amy Backpack, whereas if you dedicate between $125-$200 (or £125-£200) to the church of 'blox, you will net yourself a Sonic Backpack. These virtual items can be used across the entire Roblox platform as an avatar accessory, and if used in the Sonic Speed Simulator game, you also have an increased stamina bar. So that's useful. The promotion is available until 30 November 2023, and you can visit the specialised Amazon landing page [affiliated] for more details. If you want to get yourself some codes, you may use the links below in order to purchase directly. Amazon US: Amazon UK: Full press release from SEGA can be found below. Note: The links included in this article lead to affiliated external retailers. By clicking and continuing through these links, the Sonic Stadium may earn a commission from your purchase, which will go towards supporting this website and our coverage. 14. For those exploring the strange, baffling, but astoundingly popular realm of Roblox, Sonic is (officially) joining the world-building platform in a roundabout way. Nickelodeon and Paramount are currently hosting a special Sonic 2 movie environment and game in the "Nickverse" obby. As the trailer shows, the event gives participating players a brief running-jumping-bouncing obstacle course full of speed boosts and Sonic 2 movie posters. The activity is introduced by a creepy, dead-eyed model of movie Sonic whose empty gaze pierces your soul and makes you question everything you thought you once believed in. We currently do not have details on how long the event will run. Thanks to Dodger24848 for the news tip!
  15. Roblox is no stranger to unlicensed games, worlds, cosmetics, and quite a few parodies that are really, really on the nose, but Sonic is now officially coming to the eccentric user-content platform. Gamefam, a studio that develops games within Roblox, has announced "Sonic Speed Simulator," an experience where players can race around large Sonic-inspired environments. The announcement trailer shows off Sonic running through a Green Hill environment in full 3D, passing through loops, collecting experience crystals, and continuously building speed. Gamefam has developed more than two dozen Roblox games, including a licensed Hot Wheels open world experience. Details on the server page for Sonic Speed Simulator highlight that the experience will features racing, multiple worlds, and collectable skins and chao. The experience currently remains in paid access while in closed beta, and expects to shift to free-to-play at a later date. 16. It's not been long since Sonic was officially inserted into Roblox thanks to a special collaboration between SEGA and Gamefam Studios, but already we're getting more. Announced at the Sonic Central livestream was a new stage for Sonic Speed Simulator - Chemical Plant - alongside a special bonus Chao collectible. In Chemical Plant, Eggman has kidnapped the electric Chao, and is using its life force to power up Metal Sonic. It's up to Sonic and friends to stop him, using the power of Roblox, or something. It's apparently part of a special 'Sonic Central' specific celebration on Roblox, and there's an incentive for taking part in the festivities too. A limited edition Amy Rose Chao is available for all players using the code 'Sonic Central'. The Electric Chao / Chemical Plant stage will release on June 11.
  17. Sonic Prime has certainly had an…interesting media cycle since Netflix accidentally announced it early nearly two years ago. That seems set to continue with how its first episode will debut: within the Sonic Roblox game, Sonic Simulator. The episode will premiere within the game at 10AM EST/7AM PST on December 10, in what’s been coined a “Global Virtual Premiere Event.” This announcement came via Netflix’s Twitter account.
  18. This week, two former employees of Gamefam, the studio behind Sonic Speed Simulator on Roblox, have made public complaints about their treatment at the company while employed there and the lack of transparency in their dismissals. In a TwitLonger post, a 3D artist who worked on Sonic Speed Simulator going by the handle Digital Purgatory paints a grim picture of Gamefam as a studio, describing their behavior as "predatory." Digital Purgatory cites being underpaid compared to industry standard, salaried at $30,000 annual. Salary estimates for professional 3D modeling jobs vary, but this falls significantly below even the lowest estimates of roughly $50,000, and is less than half of the average estimate of $75,000. Beyond this, Digital Purgatory describes a pattern of crunch and lack of communication at the studio. Sonic Speed Simulator's frequent update schedule placed heavy demand on Digital Purgatory with little-to-no additional support: "Essentially I slaved away every week, working the nights while also taking care of my dad [...] just to be belittled and ignored and put on half-time cutting my pay in half." Following submission of assets for Sonic Speed Simulator's Werehog update, Digital Purgatory was informed that they were terminated without significant prior notification: "I get a notice that I was terminated from the company that I did not even notice until the next Monday to check on my tasks for the week." We attempted to contact Digital Purgatory for additional comment, but have not received a response at time of writing. Gamefam shows off Digital Purgatory's model/animation work in a Twitter post following their dismissal. This crunch and lack of communication is mirrored by former associate producer Alice in a separate TwitLonger post. While Alice was originally hired at a salary she was satisfied with, it did not ultimately match the demands of managing two high-demand projects, including training on the Roblox platform, managing international teammates across global time zones, and working within a culture that seemed to expect intense crunch: 'One such comparison was my boss telling me a fellow producer "Stayed up for an entire week" before his project launched, implying I should be more like him,' Alice describes. As her projects' progress was falling behind, she also became subject to a bizarre, opaque weekend dismissal like Digital Pergatory. Alice describes, 'The reason: "Leaking company secrets." When I asked what led him [the CEO] to believe this, I was told he had no proof but that it was the "only explanation" for my lack of productivity.' Her previous contract terminated over the weekend, Alice was offered a new contract to come later, and continued working until the new one was finalized; however, she would not get any clear answers as to when the new contract would start, its salary, or what compensation she would receive for her work between contracts. Alice adds, 'I was even told that I need to "Watch my tone" and "Be grateful" I was even being given a chance.' She opted to leave the position at the end of that week. In her post, she notes that she had not been compensated for her time between contracts or with previously offered severance pay. This comes at a time when Gamefam's website is touting major brand partnerships, including WildBrain, who recently premiered Sonic Prime's first episode within Sonic Speed Simulator. When asked for comment, Gamefam directed us to this public statement on Twitter: Fallout from these incidents have led to community backlash against Gamefam, including the hashtag "SonicSweatshopSimulator" trending on Twitter. On the official Sonic Speed Simulator Discord, there have been reports of users being banned for discussing the topic: Both Alice and Digital Purgatory stress not to harass other employees at Gamefam. Alice closes her post by stating "If you want to make change, focus your attention at the top of the pyramid - where it matters most," while Digital Purgatory added this message to their thread: While it could be very easy to cynically lump this in with the broader controversies surrounding the Roblox platform, it is worth noting that Gamefam, according to its website, maintains over 30 Roblox games with millions and billions of plays, partners with major brands for specialized content, and expects professional education and experience in its job listings. This is a studio that absolutely presents itself as professional and leans heavily on its engagement successes. This is not a fan project gone astray, this is a global game development studio allegedly putting the intense pressures of an ever shifting marketplace onto its employees without appropriate communication and resources. Gamefam lists their many of their projects, including play counts, on their official website. Whether or not you play Sonic Speed Simulator, it's important to understand that, even in the best circumstances, professional game development is a demanding field made even more so when the game in question is built on maintaining regular updates. Crunch, insufficient pay, and even a lack of basic respect multiply the demands involved in professional development. This pushes hard-working, talented creators to further life stress, burnout, or worse. As fans of the Sonic series, it's important for us to be aware of who SEGA partners with and how they operate, as the ethics of partner behavior reflects back on SEGA itself. Sonic games, and all games, cannot exist without the work of developers, artists, testers, producers, and more. Each deserve fair compensation and humane treatment. Thanks to Blacklighting, SSF1991, and Nuckles87 for providing resources for this story.
  19. This week, Sonic Speed Simulator developer Gamefam has reached a settlement with the National Labor Relations Board regarding an early 2023 complaint. GamesIndustry.biz reports Gamefam put developer Joshua DeBoer on leave, after DeBoer discussed the studio’s salaries with other employees - to identify if Gamefam paid below industry expectations for the duties involved. DeBoer claims that CEO Joe Ferencz reacted strongly to his asking others about salaries and insinuated that he was not being a team player. Polygon quotes DeBoer, “He was like, ‘Do you think it’s good to go among your colleagues and spread disaffection? You need to be seen as a leader if you want to stay here long.’” The NLRB settlement compensates DeBoer $5,000 for previously unpaid bonuses, and Gamefam was required to post employees' notification of their rights to discuss pay with each other. Gamefam lists a broad stable of games, brand integration partnerships, and special events across Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite. Gamefam's website even touts Sonic Speed Simulator, an officially licensed Sonic game, as "the biggest standalone branded game launch in Roblox history"; however, the studio previously faced accusations in December from two former employees for poor communication, lower-than-average pay, overloading responsibilities, and encouraging a crunch culture among developers. This pattern of behaviour has drawn ire from fans, who previously pushed the tag "#SonicSweatshopSimulator" on Twitter, and now the Sonic the Hedgehog Subreddit has placed a permanent ban on Speed Simulator content. While some have grouped Gamefam's issues with the broader child labor and low compensation issues associated with the Roblox platform as a whole, it's worth highlighting that Gamefam is a professional development studio outside of the Roblox Corporation. The company partners with license holders to create branded experiences, and job listings expect significant education and experience in game development. One would expect (or hope) a developer presenting itself as Gamefam does understands industry standards of pay, and the legal rights of employees.

  21. Betcha weren't expecting to see this today! ...Yup! This sure is a thing! I guess after the Sonic Movie 2 obby in the Nickelodeon Roblox game, this was inevitable, but it's still quite bizarre to see.

Her previous contract terminated over the weekend, Alice was offered a new contract to come later, and continued working until the new one was finalized; however, she would not get any clear answers as to when the new contract would start, its salary, or what compensation she would receive for her work between contracts. 23. 24. View full story
