  1. If you're a subscriber to music streaming service Spotify, and are following the official Sonic the Hedgehog or "SEGA SOUND TEAM" artists, you might have noticed a new single that dropped yesterday titled 'Sonic Chad'. Spoiler alert: it is almost certainly not official, but Spotify would have you believe it is. The absolutely bizarre release contains three tracks, each around two minutes in length. Two of these tracks are in fact "sped up" or "slowed down" versions of the first one, and that first track consists of nothing but a brief, looping (and very weird) electronic beat. Besides the strange cover art (which we presume is AI generated), there's nothing to suggest that it has anything to do with the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The artists listed (beyond SEGA SOUND TEAM and Sonic the Hedgehog, which we can only assume is a hilarious mistake) include two unknowns: "Zynthonic" and "CONTRV-PHONK". You can listen to the album here: It's likely that this was a tagging snafu on Spotify's end - we can totally imagine that this was just some chancer that tried (and succeeded) to submit their album with the SEGA Sound Team artist label, and it got approved without anybody verifying it. But it's so hilariously random that we had to write something about it. Just in the interests of being thorough, we've reached out to SEGA to find out if this really is official or not. If they come back and say it's real though, we might honestly end up with more questions than answers. Many thanks to @Maple Syrup for spotting this absolute gem of randomness. 3. Sonic appears in the top Japanese magazine, 'Third Grader in Elementary School' (小学三年生), if you look at the lower-right side of the magazine. Well, errr... kinda. If you squint really hard, he's there. Not sure what Sonic-related feature is included in this particular magazine, but if anyone can find a copy and let us know that would be fantastic! Check out the latest issue on the website here.
  4. Mario and Sonic? Together at last? Well, sort of. In a strange turn of events, it has been discovered that a couple of episodes of DiC's "Sonic Underground" have been included as bonuses in Nintendo cartoon DVDs - namely those for Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. The discovery comes from 'Jason Hill' on Sonic HQ, who reported that the "Mario DVD" contains the episode, 'Sonic Tonic' and the "Zelda DVD" contains both 'To Catch a Queen' and 'Wedding Bell Blues'. It was not specified which particular DVD releases these episodes are included on, but apparently the quality of the Sonic Underground episodes were not exactly top notch. "I've seen these episodes and they did a quick transfer to the point [where] they didn't fix the problems with the episodes... but [they're] still watchable," Hill wrote. There's probably a reason for the episodes' seemingly-random inclusion: there's apparently a new Sonic Underground DVD coming out soon, as it is mentioned "on the back of both [Mario and Zelda] DVDs." No other information is available on this upcoming release, except the title: "Sonic Underground: Dr. Robotnik's Revenge".
  5. Fans of both Bryan Lee O'Malley's iconic Scott Pilgrim graphic novel and Sonic the Hedgehog were handed a random treat this week, as the release of new Netflix animation 'Scott Pilgrim Takes Off' features an incredibly blunt reference to SEGA's mascot in the opening episode. Warning: Potential spoilers for the first episode of 'Scott Pilgrim Takes Off' follows. The Netflix animated series is sort of a re-adaptation of the original graphic novels, taking cues from and featuring practically the entire cast of the 2010 live-action movie adaptation 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' (the movie's director, Edgar Wright, is involved in this new production as executive producer). Despite the similarities to its live-action older cousin, this new show makes some creative differences - particularly in one early scene where titular protagonist Scott Pilgrim encounters the 'girl from his dreams', Ramona Flowers, at a house party. Scott sidles up to Ramona and, in an awkward attempt at breaking the ice, throws up a random anecdote that just happens to involve Jaleel White's contributions to the two 1990s Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons ('Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog' and 'Sonic the Hedgehog'). scottpilgrim-sonic.mp4 Via Cybrid101 "You know Sonic the Hedgehog?" Scott begins. "You probably know this, but in the early 90s, there were two different Sonic cartoons airing at the same time. One was dark and dramatic. The other was a hilarious comedy about chili dogs. And the same guy played Sonic in both shows. Isn't that wild? The same guy playing two different versions of the same guy?" Once he realises his interesting factoid doesn't land, Scott shies away and meekly squeaked, "Maybe you didn't watch cartoons, or you're not into chili dogs." This cute exchange wasn't just fun for us Sonic fans to experience though; the anecdote is also completely different from the 'Pac-Man / Puck-Man' line that Scott hands Ramona during the same scene in the live-action movie. The point of reference in the live-action movie focused on Pac-Man. Of course, Scott Pilgrim is no stranger to Sonic the Hedgehog references in general. The original graphic novel included a few novel nods towards the game series, while the live-action movie is peppered with Sonic sound effects throughout. This is just another cool hat tip that not only shows Bryan Lee O'Malley's mutual love for the SEGA series, but also holds a mirror up to many of our own dating attempts as well. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is currently available to stream on Netflix. Sonic News Tips Credit: Ryannumber1gamer Original Post Content: Not major news, but it’s a fun uncommon reference you wouldn’t expect that’s used to funnily talk about the circumstances of the new show. Netflix’s new Scott Pilgrim animated series dropped the first batch of episodes today, which if you weren’t aware, features the same cast and creators as the 2010 live action movie. Of course, they couldn’t help to poke fun at this with a very similar situation. So in a minor dialogue change in Episode 1, Scott tried to impress the girl of his dreams, Ramona by telling her about Sonic SatAM and Adventures of Sonic airing at the exact same time (with Sonic mentioned by name), with one being “dark and dramatic”, and the other being a “hilarious comedy about Chilli-Dogs”, before going on to talk about how it’s wild that the same guy could play two different versions of the same character (Much like the Scott Pilgrim cast here). It’s definitely not big news or anything, but given how old both SatAM and AoStH is now, and how you wouldn’t expect out of the blue references to them nowadays unless it’s already a big thing relating to Sonic (IE, the AoStH references in the OK KO crossover), I just thought it was fun how the shoe poked fun at itself by comparing itself to the 90s Sonic shows of all things. 6. The Dreamcast lives on... sort of. A company from Hong Kong has taken it upon themselves to keep the spirit of SEGA's final home console alive, by releasing a portable knock-off called the 'Treamcast'. As you can see in the image above (from Gamespot), the unit looks very similar to an official Dreamcast console, with a portable monitor sticking out the top of it. There are also a few other variations, such as a volume dial and speaker on the side of the console. Gamespot writes that the Treamcast, "contains mostly the same internal hardware as the original system, but the shell has been modified to include a speaker and volume control on the side of the unit, as well as an LCD screen. The entire Treamcast package includes two gamepads, a remote control for video CD or MP3 playback, a car adaptor, and a convenient carrying case." Given the type of product it is, it's likely that you'll only be able to find this unique system in Hong Kong (or via online retailers such as Lik-Sang, which reported on the Treamcast originally). It will apparently go on sale for the equivalent of $170 - do you think it's worth it?
  7. Sometimes the life of a Sonic News reporter can be a messy business. You not only have to cover what Sonic-related content people are playing and reading, but also what they're watching. And, according to adult supersite Pornhub, one of the things a lot of people seem to be watching is... er, well. Porn. Of Sonic. The company published its annual 'Year in Review' report for 2023 (we won't link it for obvious reasons, but if you're 'interested', it's out there) and there is a section covering Video Games specifically. In it, Sonic the Hedgehog is listed in the Top 10 of Most Searched Video Game Characters. He is bested by some understandable favourites; Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Tifa from Final Fantasy and Chun Li from... Fortnite??? We won't worry about that minor mistake - we aren't the Street Fighter Stadium here. But it's kind of morbidly impressive that Sonic the Hedgehog beat out (er, pun not intended) a number of other popular characters on the list. We feel comfortable that he ranked higher than Mario though. That seems appropriate. The fact that this is a ranking for Sonic as a character, not the series in general, and that he appears as the top-ranking male (of which there are few) on the list, is even more surprising. Pornhub also revealed its Most Searched for Video Games of 2023 in the same report - however Sonic the Hedgehog (the game/series, not the character this time) does not feature. Super Mario does however. Not sure what that says about that. You can see that chart below, if you're interested. What do you think about this random turn of events? Let us know in the comments section below (but do keep it clean please, we do have Community Rules in place. Innuendos are fine though, we love those). Original Post Content: View full story

  10. Halloween was good this year, wasn't it? Lots of cool, spooky vibes and the kids doing all of that 'trick or treat' stuff. Marvellous. But if you live in Mexico and turned the TV on the morning of October 31st, you'll have likely jumped out of your seat as you saw this face staring back at you: Source: Pedro Sola on X No, Dr. Eggman isn't really invading the real world in a Sonic X style - this is popular Mexican TV celebrity Pedrito Sola, who hosts the 'Ventaneando' programme. And the show's make-up and wardrobe team have clearly done an excellent job transforming the charismatic presenter into a menacing character hell-bent on taking over the world. Via 'Chariii5' on social media You can check out Pedro Sola's X account here for a number of videos and photos of him getting prepared for the role (and this video shows him in action a little bit too, if you're interested). But we think it's an inspired outfit and very much worth sharing to the world. Well done, Mr. Sola! Please don't turn us all into robots. Sola wasn't the only one in dress-up for Halloween either - his co-hosts also got in on the act, as you can see below. What do you think? Best costume or BEST costume? Let us know in the comments section below. Original Post Content: View full story

  12. Sonic Superstars has only been available for a few days, yet it has already become the focus of some interesting community creations. One particularly enterprising fan has shared a mod that replaces Sonic with his stylish model from Sonic Rush. 2023-superstars-rushmod1.mp4 The mod, developed by 'BeatzYT3' and posted on social media, is very much a work in progress but already includes a number of Rush features such as boost and mid-air tricks. "Have more Rush Sonker, He has a boost, falling and rising states (So you don't run in air), and an entire custom Hud, still heavily WIP," BeatzYT3 wrote. 2023-superstars-rushmod2.mp4 Another video was posted to prove the existence of the trick system, complete with audio samples as well. "There's still a lot left to do for Rush, but gonna make a full act video soon as a preview," they added. With the Sonic Hacking Contest 2023 right around the corner, the reveal of this mod is perfectly timed. And there's a lot of love for the Nintendo DS Classic Sonic Rush, so a mashup between this and Superstars will no doubt be a match made in fan heaven. Keep an eye on BeatzYT3's channel for more updates. Original Post Content: View full story

  14. With SEGA opting to bring in fan creators, their most recent collaboration is with YouTuber Cybershell for a five-minute history of Fang the Hunter in preparation for Sonic Superstars later this month. And the end result is... odd. To be clear, I don't watch Cybershell so if this is his shtick, I'm sure someone in the comments will clarify. But the gist of the video is: Fang is a criminal bounty hunter designed by artist and figurine sculptor Touma for Sonic Triple Trouble, he went on to appear in Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic the Fighters, his transforming vehicle is the Marvelous Queen, and his greedy demeanor tosses him between formidable fighting and cowardly slapstick. The video is straightforward, a little deadpan, and has some unusual editorializing like "You could have named this super cool character... if you were a Japanese youth in 1994 reading gaming magazines," and "Maybe Sonic should have hired Fang not to steal the Chaos Emeralds. Ever think of that, Sonic?" Alongside their "Fast Friends Forever" series, this is now the second concurrent fan creator promotional project SEGA is running, reaching out to fan artists, professional illustrators, comic writers, and now, video producers. 16. If you like Sonic, and you like driving, then boy does Europcar have a treat for you! The vehicle rental service is kicking off a rewards-based giveaway event, to coincide with the release of Sonic Superstars. Nintendo Switch and Sonic Superstars bundles are on offer as top prizes in a free draw, while special 'Sonic Superstars gifts' are available to those who hire a vehicle with the company for a limited time. "You might even get to meet Sonic himself," reads the website. Can we pay a little extra to have him drive the car for us as well? The promotion is only available in select countries - UK, Germany, Spain, France and Portugal. Which makes sense, given the 'Europe' part of the company's name. If you fancy driving a car that's not yours for a little bit of Sonic tat then head to the Europcar website here and take one of those motors out for a spin.

  18. Today, Xbox Wire has announced a contest to win a custom Sonic 2 Movie Sonic vs. Knuckles-styled Xbox Series S along with two truly reprehensible controllers covered entirely in thick blue and red fur. UPDATE: Contest tweet has gone live. We've embedded it in the article. There will be two victims winners of the specialty console and controllers, and entry requires you to follow Xbox with a public Twitter account through 7 days after you've entered and retweet an official contest tweet with the hashtag #XboxSonic2Sweepstakes. U.S. entrants will also be allowed to enter through use of Microsoft reward points. I will now spend the following paragraph describing the controllers in unflattering terms: They look like the Hollywood live action-CG version of the Elmo and Cookie Monster Wii remotes. They look like the eggs Gritty would lay in order to propagate his species. They look like fondling a terrier's face. They look like someone dropped the stickiest controller onto a shag carpet and had to cut it loose. They look like if hardware could experience floating point errors. And most importantly: they look like an actual waking nightmare to clean. OK, I think that's got it out of my system. Good luck if you enter!
  19. There has been a rating, and there has been a cover image. And now there's an official Sonic Origins website. Well, sort of. It's up, but the public are not able to access it just yet. If you don't understand, let me explain. Usually, when SEGA has an official Sonic website in the works, you can technically go to the site and you won't be greeted with any "invalid URL" errors. Instead, if SEGA's still working on the site, you'll see a white screen or "Access Denied" messages. This isn't unusual for an official Sonic website to make an appearance like this. As far back as Sonic Generations, maybe even earlier than that, you can find news about an official website for the game being discovered just before major news for the related game is confirmed. For example, just a few days before more Sonic Frontiers news was confirmed at The Game Awards last year, there was an official Sonic Frontiers website discovered. Actually, that previous paragraph brings up another important point. We are likely very close to hearing more information about Sonic Origins. It is almost all but guaranteed now that SEGA may be preparing to share more details about the game before April comes to an end. When they do, we'll let you know. Via Twitter
  20. It’s a weird time to be a person who engages in…any sort of media. From reboots, to unprecedented crossovers, to entire works of media built around meta commentary, the modern media landscape is unlike anything humankind has experienced before. That of course, means that Movie Sonic’s original design popping up in a Disney movie reboot of Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers that’s also got meta comedy and also acts as a spiritual successor to Roger Rabbit is a thing that just happened that’s surprising, but not that surprising. “Ugly Sonic,” as he is apparently called, has been confirmed by multiple reviews of Rescue Rangers. The character, which will be voiced by Tim Robinson, will be more than a background cameo, and has at least some dialogue in the movie. According to one reviewer, Ugly Sonic works the convention circuit, and says to Dale, “the internet saw my human teeth and burned the place down.” Well… he wasn't wrong! UPDATE: We now have images of the 'Ugly Sonic' character from clips of the movie. These particular images are from NintendoLife but screengrabs have generally been circulating the internet all over the place. Take a look: The Chip & Dale movie will hit Disney+ later this week on May 20. And yes, this means Sonic has four separate voice actors right now...
  21. Sonic Prime has certainly had an…interesting media cycle since Netflix accidentally announced it early nearly two years ago. That seems set to continue with how its first episode will debut: within the Sonic Roblox game, Sonic Simulator. The episode will premiere within the game at 10AM EST/7AM PST on December 10, in what’s been coined a “Global Virtual Premiere Event.” This announcement came via Netflix’s Twitter account.
  22. It was only a matter of time before someone managed to completely misread the sprites in Sonic Mania and create a brand new character out of it. We just didn't think it would happen so soon! One player in particular has captured the hearts and minds of the Sonic community by epically misinterpreting one of the bosses. Introducing 'Omelette' / 'Eggette' / 'Ovoid Robotnik'! Artist Alpha Gamboa had reached the Eggman spider mech boss (found at the end of the Flying Battery) and, instead of seeing Dr. Eggman piloting the mech upside-down, saw a cute and angry munchkin with spiky hair and a crazy headband. She was christened 'Eggette' by Gamboa and his imagination shortly went wild with the above drawings being published as a result. Naturally, this was very quickly embraced by everybody on Twitter - including key artists who worked on the Sonic Mania project as well as SEGA staff - and fan art of this mad misread of a boss battle started to blossom. There's now even a sweet little canon made just for her, as Dr. Eggman's earnest niece. Alternative names for her also started flying around, including 'Eggatha', 'Omelette', 'Dr Ovoid Robotnik' and 'Yolki Dolki'. Here are some of our favourites. By TheMemeJester By DiegoAndsMtz By space_ellien By CrissCrossSauce By TheRickyWill The BlackAuras By blackbookalpha By chibijenhen_art By LemonGlittercor With Sonic Mania a huge critical success - with tons of community support - and with SEGA keeping an eye on fan sentiment around the game post-launch, we'll say this now; if a 'Sonic Mania 2' project gets green-lit in the future, we definitely want 'Omelette' to play a part in it.
  23. Californian baseball fans were given a super Sonic treat over the weekend, as the regional team Oakand Athletics paid a tribute to SEGA's mascot while celebrating their players on the Jumbotron during a recent game. 2023-baseball-sonic-game.mp4 The video above, shared on social media by 'Dizzydennis', features a number of present and past A's players as they raced around a Green Hill Zone style level collecting baseballs and knocking out evil robot villains. At the very end, former player Eric Chavez appears to 'win' the game, while the team's elephant mascot dances in victory. It's a really cool thing for sports fans to see, and just goes to show how mainstream Sonic the Hedgehog still is across all forms of media. Let us know what you think of this tribute in the comments below.
  24. Face/Off and Mission Impossible 2 movie director John Woo is backing a new video game development studio, and that studio has launched a multi-year partnership with SEGA to work on at least three projects together. The studio is called Tiger Hill Entertainment, and is based in Santa Monica. According to a press release (via Gamespot), the company's mission "is to redefine the action adventure genre through its innovative approach to development and production." "This will be the first time a filmmaker and a video game developer will work together on original properties to be developed into video games," writes Gamespot, quoting John Woo as saying, "Interactive entertainment has quickly become a mainstay in the entertainment industry... With games being cinematic by nature, it only makes sense to bridge the gap between filmmaker and game developer to deliver the ultimate action adventure gaming experience. "The formation of Tiger Hill Entertainment and the company's partnership with video game industry veteran Sega will deliver that experience." SEGA America's executive vice president of content strategy and business development, Shinobu Toyoda, added, "John Woo's incredible sense for action films and his deep storytelling abilities combined with Sega's innovative approach to game development will help shape the future of action adventure games in this industry." Well, we hope so too. Here are the three announced games born from this partnership:
  25. British game studio Team17 - best known for their breakout arcade games on the Commodore Amiga home computer - has signed a deal with SEGA that will see the House of Sonic publish the upcoming third-dimensional multiplayer strategy game, Worms 3D. The Worms series has always been in 2D, and this entry is the first step into the third dimension, with third-person control as you seek to defeat opposing teams' worms with crazy weapons like bazookas and banana bombs. It's sounding quite ambitious! According to a story on SPOnG, SEGA decided to pick up the license to Worms because, "Brilliant gameplay and a strong brand Worms 3D has SEGA 'hit' written all over it," Okay, if you say so. "The creators at Team 17 have inspired us all with their passion and vision and we're delighted to be partnering with them in bringing Worms 3D to as wide a market as possible." No doubt the game will be present at this year's E3 as well, at SEGA's booth. We love Team17's games, and we love SEGA, so as random as this all sounds, this is good news! We hope Worms 3D turns out great too.
