  1. Itching for an eight hour expansion to Sonic Frontiers? Did you look at Ares and think "Well, this has too many points of interest?" Do you just want to enjoy walking the highway without any pesky G.U.N. trucks on your tail? Then there's finally a mod for you: Desert Bus Frontiers. Created by modder Weezley, Desert Bus Frontiers replaces Cyberspace stage 1-1 with a strip of road spanning a featureless desert simulating the travel time between Tuscon, Arizona and Los Vegas, Nevada. Across subsequent updates, the mod even steers you juuuuustly slightly off-center so you can't completely zone out or rubber-band your controller. For those unfamiliar, Desert Bus is an infamous mini-game from the cancelled SEGA CD title Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors. Smoke and Mirrors was mostly a collection of jokes and tricks to play on your friends, but Desert Bus was presented as a simulator that actually reflects a practical real world experience: driving a bus on a straight road for 360 miles in real time. For nearly 20 years, the game has taken on the identity of a marathon challenge and charity centerpiece, most notably the annual Desert Bus for Hope charity marathon. If you want to preserve the Desert Bus spirit, you can keep Sonic at a leisurely pace for the full eight hours, but as Weezley notes, you can actually make it in about three by using the boost. However, as a caution, the ridiculous size of the level does create some erratic graphical effects that would be risky for those sensitive to flashing lights or colors. When I tested the mod myself, there was a black polygon spanning the entire width of the horizon constantly flickering. Amusingly, Sonic himself also seemed to be dealing with some nasty floating point issues too. If you want to check it out, you can find the mod on its Game Banana page. 2. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a Jet Set Radio-inspired action game created by Team Reptile that released in August 2023, but it didn't take long for SEGA fans to shape it into a high-speed Sonic the Hedgehog experience. A newly-launched mod introduces classic character skins of the blue blur and friends, while players can now enjoy skating through custom maps of Emerald Coast, Grand Metropolis and Metal City. Starting with the most recent addition to the Bomb Rush Cyberfunk mod scene, this impressive package - titled 'SEGA SONIC CYBERFUNK' - was created by 'Zaobro4959' and allows you to blast around New Amsterdam with a range of Sonic character skins as playable characters. The mod contains Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Metal Sonic models with a range of skins to choose from: default; a 'Mega Drive' 16-bit palette; a 'Saturn' look that mimics Yuji Uekawa's Sonic Jam; a 'Modern-era' style that takes the characters up to present day; and a special 'red flashing' Powered Up mode exclusively for Metal Sonic. You can download the mod via the Game Banana website here. Meanwhile, if you want to skate through some familiar 2000-era Sonic stages, then you're in luck because as recently as a few weeks ago, custom maps have been introduced to the Bomb Rush Cyberfunk game. And as you'd expect, the floodgates have opened for modders to create some fantastic reproductions of Sonic stages of yesteryear. A lot of these maps can be found on the Thunderstore website, but a video from TikTok user 'gecko0031' highlights the cream of the crop - a skate-tastic version of Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure, complete with loop-de-loops, a wall-riding port of Sonic Heroes' Grand Metropolis and the complete Metal City circuit from Sonic Riders. I have to say that I didn't have the time to really engage in Bomb Rush Cyberfunk until now, but these mods are tempting me to give the game a try! Are you playing Bomb Rush Cyberfunk? What are your thoughts on these retro remakes? Let us know in the comments section below!

  6. Well, Sonic Generations is finally being remastered for modern platforms, with completely new Shadow content to boot. While surely exciting for most Sonic fans, this release comes with a massive potential downside for hardcore Sonic community: the loss of the original Sonic Generations PC port, and the hundreds of mods the community has made for it over the past decade. While not a guarantee, it’s not uncommon for companies to delist older, cheaper versions of a game they’ve made a remaster of. So, before it’s too late, I thought I’d write this open letter to SEGA with a simple request: please don’t delist Sonic Generations’ original port from Steam! The Sonic community has invested a lot of time and energy into Sonic Generations mods. From patches that help the game run better, to new characters and Sonic skins, to physics mods, to entirely new levels, the sheer volume of the game’s mods are extensive. There's even a mod that utilizes a Mario 64 ROM (that you have to source yourself) to insert Mario into Sonic Generations, complete with that game's physics. Generations has long been popular with the modding community, and some of my favorite Sonic mods in any given year have been for this game. Sonic Unleashed, a game otherwise unavailable on modern hardware outside of hardware taxing emulation and Xbox backwards compatibility, has had all of its stages brought to Sonic Generations via Unleashed Project, filling what is currently a gaping hole in Sonic game availability. Modders have expanded on Generations’ original concept with loads of new remade levels like Sonic Heroes’ Grand Metropolis, Sonic Rush's Water Palace, Sonic 2’s Mystic Cave, and a whole Sonic 2006 level pack that legitimately plays much better than the actual game. There’s even some really solid original levels like Shivery Mountainside, an awesome mod I reviewed a few years ago. Heck, modders even let me finally play as Scourge, something I’ve been wanting to do in a Sonic game for a decade now. Key to Sonic Generations’ popularity with modders has been its accessibility. Being able to download and run Sonic Generations off the Steam store has been invaluable, and has helped keep Generations relevant even as the consoles it was also made for fell into disuse and those versions became less accessible. For this to continue, this can’t change. Delisting Sonic Generations in favor of Sonic X Shadow Generations has the potential to render more than a decades worth of mods completely inaccessible to newer members of the community. Even if it’s possible to update these mods to work with the new game, most of these mods are no longer being updated and will likely be left behind. Worse, if Sonic X Shadow Generations doesn’t appeal to modders like the original game did, it would also make future works inaccessible. We’ve already seen this happen to some degree with retro Sonic’s PC modding scene. Sonic 3 AIR is a very popular fanmade version of Sonic 3 that utilized the Steam port of Sonic 3. Ever since that’s been delisted, fans have been forced to source their own ROM for Sonic 3 in order to enjoy AIR and it’s ever-increasing assortment of mods. Despite being a newer and more readily accessible release, Sonic Origins has failed to attract the same level of attention from modders. Thankfully, Sonic 3 ROMs are quite easy to obtain, so Sonic 3 AIR mods are still thriving. Sonic Generations, being a more advanced game, won't be that easy for new fans to obtain for these mods. I understand the downsides of leaving a $20 version of your big Sonic game up, but removing it would be a massive blow to the Sonic franchise’s biggest supporters. I would hope that whoever makes these decisions at SEGA is confident enough in the value Sonic X Shadow Generation’s new content to simply leave the old game up, but if this is somehow unacceptable I ask that you find some other way to keep this version accessible. Raise the price if you need to! Or include it for free with Sonic X Shadow Generations and let everyone who buys the game also receive the old version! Just please, find some way to keep Sonic Generations around. I don’t think we’re asking for much. View full story

  8. Since launch, Sonic Frontiers has had a strong mod scene, with edits ranging from physics changes to character model swaps to completely new maps. And it looks like game director Morio Kishimoto has taken note according to a recent Famitsu interview. In the interview (as translated by My Nintendo News) Kishimoto saw the output of the modding community as a challenge in what to add in the game's major updates: As we saw, the end result was the inclusion of Amy, Knuckles, and Tails, each with very unique styles and diverse movesets, and a complete remix of the final island (as well as some brutally difficult challenges). 10. Or; 'How I learned to stop worrying and love the LittleBigPlanet Community' So, I went on a bit of a journey yesterday/last night involving the third mainline installment of the LittleBigPlanet franchise, and I didn't really plan on making this a topic, but I find the subject really interesting. So think of this as a little documentation on top of a topic. It, like any weird tale, all started on Twitter, where this interesting little tweet popped up on my feed. It had been a while since I played LittleBigPlanet 3 (or a LBP game in general. Thanks, Minecraft) but I know a thing or two about a thing or two, and I know neither costumes on display are official. (aside from the rather fine 'stache) My curiosity took control over me and, for the first time in years, I booted up LittleBigPlanet 3 in a search for costumes like this. Now, I should mention that I briefly indulged in this type of thing before, back when this was "new", with unused costumes and glitched DLC. But despite this, I had no idea what I was getting into upon searching for these modded costumes. The screenshot above comes from unmodded hardware, on a completely regular PS4. Featuring modded costumes, such as PS3 Sackboy, Parappa, and an early design for Sackboy (far right next to the portal) alongside Sonic stickers. The items in the pod itself (Sackbots, portals) come from an odd glitch where you can become a custom character in the pod, but that's besides the topic at hand. Even the pod background is modded. All of this can be acquired by simply finding the right levels and just...playing and getting the items. For free. This is some form of asset injection that takes advantage of an odd exploit. I was informed how this works from the owner of the LittleBigBeyond Discord Server, a server dedicated to LittleBigPlanet modding. To quote them here: Essentially, the game treats the modded content as if it was made within the game itself, so it gets saved to the modder's LittleBigPlanet profile like everything else they own. Because of this, people use this to mod in whatever they want. From costumes, to pod backgrounds, to stickers. Above is a notable example of this in action. This is an unofficial pack of Sonic costumes and stickers featuring Super Sonic, Shadow, Metal Sonic and a few other characters. This requires the OFFICIAL Sonic DLC to use, but this is very impressive work done by the creator, and is one of the best examples of what can be done with this exploit. And that's the end of my little journey. I'm sure this is only the beginning of the big modding craze this game will no doubt experience, and if anything interesting happens I'll be sure to inform everyone about it.
  11. Same as the Generations mods topic, Since Sonic 4 Episode 1 is now out on PC and Episode 2 is coming to PC, it's only a while until we can expect some mods for them to pop up as well. So here's the official thread dedicated to mods for Sonic 4 Episode 1/Episode 2, so post em here if you got any, or give ideas or suggestions about mods. Yes CanofEpicSauce, I'm sooooo original.

  13. With Sonic Generations coming for PC, the potential for modding is incredible. With Sonic Generations, the true creativity of the fan base can be shown. So anyway, what would you expect/like to see when it comes to the mods?
