  1. On this day in 2014, SEGA gathered a number of mainstream press into the ESPACE venue in New York to unveil a bold new transmedia approach to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise: Sonic Boom. Initially anticipated to be a new cartoon show following the name's passing mention at the Nuremberg Toy Fair on Feb 1, it was revealed that a line of branded toys, video games, comics and more would also form part of the ambitious strategy. This new thread in the franchise, which SEGA insisted was not intended to replace the Classic/Modern Sonic universe/s, featured dramatic new designs for Sonic and friends, with whole new approaches to gameplay and tone in the associated video games. Ultimately, the reception to much of this new era of Sonic the Hedgehog ranged from negative to indifference, and the Sonic Boom project was promptly abandoned after the disastrous launch of WiiU title 'Rise of Lyric'. However, the cartoon series - perhaps the most/only positively-received element of the franchise - continued for several years before its final episodes aired in 2017.
  2. It seems like Sonic the Hedgehog and Inugami Korone are truly super-best friends! After a series of successful video game collaborations and regional promotions, the Japanese VTuber has once again partnered with SEGA to produce a short four-panel comic in aid of the company's "Fast Friends Forever" initiative. In the comic "Return to Sender", the YouTube personality "demonstrates the explosively positive way of working together with friends," according to the Sonic social media post. We do like how fun and expressive it is, even in doodle form. You probably don't need any kind of introduction to who Inugami Korone is, but just in case SEGA has provided a handy Q&A with the online virtual celebrity as well. Enjoy!

  4. For those exploring the strange, baffling, but astoundingly popular realm of Roblox, Sonic is (officially) joining the world-building platform in a roundabout way. Nickelodeon and Paramount are currently hosting a special Sonic 2 movie environment and game in the "Nickverse" obby. As the trailer shows, the event gives participating players a brief running-jumping-bouncing obstacle course full of speed boosts and Sonic 2 movie posters. The activity is introduced by a creepy, dead-eyed model of movie Sonic whose empty gaze pierces your soul and makes you question everything you thought you once believed in. We currently do not have details on how long the event will run. Thanks to Dodger24848 for the news tip!

Do you like SEGA's spoilerific marketing?

So, for every Sonic game in recent years, SEGA always gradually outs every level and most boss fights in the game in the lead up from announcement to release. It's just been done again for the latest game Sonic Generations. We often get things like this leaked one way or another, but officially, we still find out every level and most boss fights anyway. I personally don't like that they do this, since the only effective way to avoid this information is to avoid the gaming websites, fansites and forums. I shouldn't have to do this, though, and as a writer for TSS, I can't very well avoid the info, as I have to report news like level revelations. I think we should at least have a few levels kept as a surprise for when we finally get our hands on a game. What do you guys and gals think?
