The Spin: Why Sonic’s Movie Design (Probably) Shouldn’t Change

To say it has been a tumultuous week in the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom is something of an understatement, with the first movie trailer seeing release and receiving a less than favourable reception (at time of writing, dislikes outweighed likes by 2-to-1 on YouTube). Sonic Talk Emergency Podcast: Movie Trailer Panic

We didn’t want to wait until the end of the month to talk about this one. Recorded the day after the trailer’s release, Jason, Alex and Chris discuss their opinions on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer. We may have seen leaked images early, but we weren’t going to pass judgement until we saw the hedgehog in motion. Well we did and…..it’s even worse than we thought. Sonic Movie Director: “You Want Changes. It’s Going To Happen”

Jeff Fowler, Director of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, has today acknowledged the largely negative feedback the movie trailer has received over the last 48 hours.

In a tweet today, Fowler states

“Thank you for the support. And the critisism. The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be…”

It is currently unclear as to what extent the character will, or indeed can be changed, with less than 8 months left until the film releases.

This is not the first time that a movie character’s design has been altered in a movie due to fan backlash; the first Michael Bay Transformers movie received similar treatment in which Megatron, the main antagonist of the movie, saw alterations after complaints from fans that his appearance was too far from the source material (thanks for the reminder, @TransistorSynd on twitter!).

“Green Hills” Image From Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Emerges

More images are emerging from the set of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, currently filming in British Columbia:

The image, purportedly from Pitt Lake near Vancouver, shows a town sign for the fictional location of “Green Hills” (which although is cut off in the image is also written on the side of the police cruiser in the background). Note the extra “s”, in the location, likely a bit of creative license on the writer’s part rather than a nod to the lesser-known zone of the same name from the Master System version of Sonic 2.

The sign also comes with the town motto of “The little town with a big heart”, along with the town’s population and elevation above sea level (although they missed a trick with the population – should have been 1991, not 1981!).

If this image is anything to go by, it is probably a good indicator we will see more nods and references to the game throughout the movie.
