Even after Duke Nukem Forever which, to most, was a colossal failure (Of which I have differing opinions about, but that's a topic for another time), Gearbox and Tryptech still would like to continue the Duke franchise despite the fact that many consider the franchise dead due to Forever being such a disappointment. My question is, what exactly would you change about Forever or add to the Duke franchise to make it fresh, fun, and new, without pandering to a more mainstream audience like Forever did by adding restrictions on Duke's arsenal and more linear environments? Firstly and most obviously, in addition to expanding Duke's set of weaponry, I would make it so all weapons can be carried at once. As someone who enjoyed Duke Nukem Forever, this was one that I feel was an utterly moronic decision. Duke 3D, while having a heavy emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving, was extremely fast paced and gave you a lot of options as far as weaponry went. Do you want to go balls out with the rocket launcher and beat every level with a bang (So long as you had the ammo for it)? Go right ahead. The shotgun more to your liking? Use it. So long as you had the firearms and ammo on you, you could use every single gun the game allowed you to pick up whenever you wanted to. Why they disabled this in Forever, I don't know. For the next game, however, Gearbox should simply allow you to carry whatever weapon whenever you want, that's simply the Duke way. In addition to the not-shitty weapon system, just give Duke a bigger arsenal all together. Every weapon from Forever was in Duke 3D, it's time he had more. I have no innovative ideas or anything, that's just how I feel about how weapons should be handled in the next game. Whatever Gearbox have in store for the next game is up to them, but I believe the next Duke should be considerably less linear, with more exploration in its level design. Forever pushed you through each and every section with very little time to breathe, it would be cool if the next game had more of a Bioshock type of level design, in which that you progress from level to level, but you have the option of returning to previous areas and your progress is made through exploration and such as well as lots of fire fights and puzzles. That's not to say the game should take place in an open world ala GTA or a closed environment ala Bioshock, but the game as a whole should just be a lot less linear than Forever if anything. Even with a level-to-level style of game progression, the levels should just be more open to exploration. Maybe not hours worth of keycard hunts like in 3D (Say what you want about Duke Nukem 3D, but some of those levels got ridiculous), but you get the idea. That's basically all I have to say, I'm a big Duke fan and I did happen to enjoy Forever, but the franchise has such potential that needs to be tapped upon in the future, I hope Gearbox understand and use exactly what Duke Nukem 3D and Forever did both right and wrong, as well as new ideas and modern inspiration to make a significantly better game.
