  1. Ever since it was announced that Sonic X would be brought to the US, fans in Europe have been waiting to hear when the show may arrive on their TV screens. Well, we may hear some good news soon - Fox Kids Europe has announced it has signed UK and worldwide rights to the new anime. The deal covers TV and home video rights for every country in the world outside of North America and Asia, and includes "52 half-hour episodes of Sonic X from TMS Entertainment Limited". The below comes straight from the Fox Kids Europe press release: No word on when the show will air in these countries, but since the US is soon to start syndication of Sonic X on Fox Box in September, hopefully it won't be much longer a wait for UK fans. Read the entire press release, which includes mention of other cartoon shows, below. Source: Fox Kids Europe
  2. A 2001 press kit containing hundreds of images and a 36-page booklet promoting Sonic the Hedgehog's 10th Anniversary from Spain has been discovered, featuring long lost promotional images of Sonic Adventure 2. Community media archivist AstroSeedP shared the discovery of the retro media kit on social media, noting that it took some time to recover all of the files as the CD was partially unreadable. The full ISO is now available on the Internet Archive, and includes high-resolution PSDs of common Sonic Adventure-era character artwork, key art and logos - alongside a wealth of officially-captured screenshots of Sonic Adventure 2, many of which have never been seen before. We've included a couple in this article, but check out the Archive page for the full monty: The booklet itself offers a deep dive (in Spanish) the entire history of the Sonic the Hedgehog game series from 1991 to 2001, along with a lengthy overview of the Sonic Team and some words from then-studio head Yuji Naka. I have to say, this is all making me rather nostalgic - Sonic Adventure 2 was the first major Sonic release that this very website covered, waaaaay back in the day, so I personally remember a lot of these images as they were being distributed. It's very cool to see new media for this classic game being discovered, and I recommend everyone check out the full package for all the info! Original Post Content: View full story

  4. By now, most people around the world have been enjoying Sonic Pinball Party on the Game Boy Advance. But while the game has been on store shelves in the US and Japan for months, it has yet to be released in Europe. What's that all about? We asked Sega of Europe but it only had this to say: The game released in the US on June 1 and in Japan on July 17, which makes the hold up in Europe quite strange. I'll keep you updated on a possible release date (if it happens) when I can. I hope it's released soon!
  5. Amazon UK has seemingly done it again - after hinting towards a November 2003 release date for Sonic Battle recently, a new product page has appeared on the shopping site that points at a launch of 5th March 2004 for Sonic Heroes. At this time, we can't verify if that is indeed the final confirmed release date for Sonic's first multi-platform adventure, but the retailer seems pretty sure of itself. Either it is a very specific placeholder, to change as we get closer to the game's release, or someone at SEGA has slipped them the date and they've added it in. You can check the listing on Amazon UK here. But fingers crossed we won't be waiting too long after the US and Japan for our copies in Europe, whenever those countries' release dates are announced.
  6. Sonic Battle could be heading to European stores in November 2003, if a recent listing from Amazon UK is to be believed. The release window was mentioned in a newly-found retail page for the GBA fighting game, by user 'Chaoz Jamez' on Sonic HQ. Alongside the note about a launch "sometime in November", the listing had a number of other features laid out on the page: Sonic Battle was originally announced during E3 2003 and features the blue blur and his pals duking it out for supremacy over a mysterious robot called Emerl. It's looking pretty solid, so it's great to know how long we have to wait to get our hands on it proper.
  7. Don't hold your breath for a re-release of 1999's 'Sonic the Movie' anytime soon - according to distribution company Discotek Media, SEGA is missing key licensing paperwork that could prevent the anime from ever seeing the light of day again outside of Japan. In a Q&A streamed a few hours ago, the Discotek team spoke about the Sonic OVA anecdotally when answering a question regarding a different anime license (Dominion Tank Police, from Toshiba). The show's host explained that the reason they could not license Sonic, despite their best efforts (and SEGA's apparent willingness to make it happen), was because of missing paperwork relating to music and voice actor royalties. "SEGA owns it, they know they own it, we were gonna license it, but they don't [know where] the paperwork for the music and the voices [are]," said one of the show's hosts. "They don't know who they have to pay residuals to on it and... [that's] kind of where the logjam is, they don't know where that is, so it can't be licensed out beyond Japan... in Japan I think it's still available on streaming, but it can't be licensed outside there because they don't know who to pay and what to pay them." This only appears to impact the international/English language version of the movie - in Japan, 'Sonic the Hedgehog' (as it's simply known there) originally released in 1996 as a two-part feature, and was a close collaboration between SEGA Japan and production company Pierrot. In 1999, SEGA partnered with ADV Films on the English-language dub and released the product as a full-length movie. However, ADV Films has long since been defunct; the parent company, AD Vision, shuttered in 2009, and the any paperwork relating to their subsidiary's projects have likely been scattered to the four winds, along with a number of its own licenses (many of which ended up with Funimation). So for now, SEGA is forced to make the Sonic OVA unavailable outside of Japan. Let's hope that paperwork turns up under someone's couch or something. You can catch the anecdote in full via the video below (at 1:49:54): Sonic News Tips Credit: GentlemanX Original Post Content: On tonight's Discotek Day Livestream, the Discotek team confirmed the reason the Sonic OVA remains unavailable outside of Japan. When answering a question regarding another license (Dominion Tank Police from Toshiba in case you were wondering), the Sonic OVA was used as an example of incomplete paperwork preventing a title from being licensed. Specifically, Sega was planning on making the Sonic OVA available for licensing again but encountered a problem when they could not find the paperwork detailing royalty rights. In particular, Sega was unable to know what royalties the voice actors and composer would be owed for a new licensing deal. Due to this, Sega is forced to make the OVA unavailable for licensing outside of Japan (in Japan, the OVA remains available for streaming). Discotek acknowledged that Sega is aware they own the rights to the OVA, but due to this snafu they cannot license it to third parties such as overseas licensors. So for anyone hoping the Sonic OVA will one day be made available on blu-ray or streaming in English speaking territories, it sounds like you may have a long time to wait and can only hope Sega of Japan finds the right paperwork. 9. Limited edition game specialist Pix'n Love has finally unveiled its 'Collector's Edition' release of Sonic Origins Plus, a certificated set that includes a new 96-page artbook, acrylic plate, exclusive packaging and a selection of lithographic character prints. 11. Ever since SEGA Japan announced the Mega Drive Mini II, we have been eagerly awaiting news of a Western version of the new microconsole. The US got theirs - the Genesis Mini II - and now finally fans in Europe can get their nostalgia fix with a region-specific branded version of the console that just... reminds us of simpler days, you know? SEGA announced the European version of the Mega Drive Mini II earlier today on Twitter. You can see the packaging for this region's release above. Just like the 1990s console refresh it is based on, it comes in a sleek black shell with striking red power and reset buttons. Surprisingly, the Mega Drive Mini II will also come with (finally) a six-button Mega Drive pad as well! The price of the console will sting a little bit for those of you used to the cost of the first Mega Drive Mini - a whopping £104 compared to its predecessor's £75 - but SEGA has previously advised that this console will be manufactured in much smaller quantities due to the fact that it is considered a more niche, enthusiast product. If you need reminding, the Mega Drive Mini II contains 60 titles pulling from forgotten gems in SEGA's 16-bit history, as well as a selection of Mega CD add-on games as well as seven brand new titles made specifically for this hardware release. Sonic fans will get to play Sonic 3D Flickies' Island and Sonic CD on this new machine, but whether the European version contains the PAL/Japanese soundtrack or the US one remains to be seen. Pre-orders for the European SEGA Mega Drive Mini II went live - as an Amazon exclusive - earlier today but were quickly sold out! Stock seemed to return later in the day, so if you are interested we recommend you get on board as soon as you can. Pre-order the SEGA Mega Drive Mini II here for £104 (Amazon Affiliated Link)
  12. It's officially Spooky Season, and to celebrate the official SEGA Shop in UK and Europe has unleashed a new range of cool Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise so you can get in the festive mood. The new 'Official SEGA Halloween' range of 2022 consists of three new items - a black t-shirt featuring Sonic and Shadow rummaging around some pumpkins, a really spooky Eggman scarecrow mug, and a new set of Pin Kings badges that include Scarecrow Eggman and Amy Rose as a Witch. The t-shirt will set you back £14.99, while the mug costs £12.99 and the badges £7.99 - but SEGA Shop is also doing a bundle offer with all three items for £29.99. So it's up to you how spooky you wanna get this season! Check out the full range on SEGA Shop UK here.
  13. If you're tempted to get a physical copy of Sonic Origins Plus when it releases in a couple weeks' time, then you may want to check in with European limited editions specialist Pix'n Love Games, which has announced that it is working with SEGA and PLAION to release a 'Collectors Edition' of the compilation. Posted on the company's social media channels earlier today, Pix'n Love Games called for all "die hard Sonic fans" to simply stay tuned for more details. No details have so far been revealed as to what such a Collector's Edition might include, but Pix'n Love is no stranger to working with SEGA on special game releases, so chances are there may be some additional things here that would be worth your time. What would you like to see in a Sonic Origins Plus Collector's Edition (besides, maybe, all of the content actually on the disc this time)? Let us know in the comments section below. UPDATE [9 June 2023, 16:11 UK]: It appears that the tweet from Pix'n Love announcing the Sonic Origins Plus Collector's Edition from yesterday (as reported above) has been deleted. The only reference to anything Sonic-related is a tweet from 7 June asking fans to "see you tomorrow". We've reached out to Pix'n Love for an update and we'll share if we get an answer. via Twitter
  14. SEGA recently revealed that it was returning to self-publishing its games in Europe, and ever since then we've been waiting eagerly for that day to come. The first title to be published by SEGA Europe will be Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II in May, followed closely by Sonic Adventure DX and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution in June. Since SEGA dropped out of the hardware market, Infogrames and THQ have been sharing duties in publishing certain SEGA titles in the West. While SEGA of America's office was still active, SEGA Europe ceased publishing operations entirely... until PSO I & II's release in May, that is. SEGA will open up offices in both London and Paris to manage the publishing duties across PAL territories. That means not just UK and France, but rest of Europe, Australia and New Zealand too. "Sega Europe is now in a position to get closer to the European games market, with its own publishing operation," SEGA Europe president Naoya Tsurumi said in a report on Gamespot. "The transition from hardware manufacturer to software publisher is now complete, and we see the next few years as an incredibly exciting time for growth for Sega Europe." Fitting for us that the first games to launch under the SEGA Europe label will be Sonic Team-developed titles. We can't wait!
  15. Hey, we thought the Dreamcast was dead! Well, sadly it still is, yes - it wasn't all a bad dream - but SEGA Europe is somehow still keeping things going with a new official bundle now on store shelves. If you're on the market for a backup Dreamcast in case your current one goes kaput, this is going to be the best time to get one. According to Swirlvision, the new bundle package contains a Dreamcast console, a controller and VMU, and copies of Virtua Fighter 3tb, Confidential Mission and Phantasy Star Online. You also get a disc for the latest version of SEGA's online access service, Dreamkey 3.0. This replaces a previous bundle that offered Metropolis Street Racer and Jet Set Radio instead of Confidential Mission and PSO - however, both are still available so it's simply a matter of which kind of games you want with your new Dreamcast. The MSR/JSR pack remains at a price of £105 while the CM/PSO pack is priced at around £100. Source: Swirlvision

SEGA is Coming Back to Europe!

At long last! After a couple years of non-existence in the region, SEGA has announced that it will work to re-establish itself in Europe with a new base of operations from which it will directly sell games in the UK and across the continent. Company director Satoshi Kayama confirmed the move, in a report by XenGamers, as a means to reduce the cost of its operating expenses in the region. Since the fall of the Dreamcast, SEGA had to close its European offices and work with publishing partners Infogrames and Sony to release its games here. But it seems like the cost of doing this has given the company an opportunity to return to direct sales and marketing operations in the territory. "SEGA hopes to significantly reduce operating expenses by handling future software releases internally," XenGamers writes. "Currently, SEGA must sell 2.6 million software units in Europe in order to break even financially. By handling future releases internally however, SEGA plans to reduce that figure to 2 million next year." All sounds super positive, best of luck with it SEGA! We can't wait to see you in the UK and Europe properly again! Source: XenGamers
  17. Well, it's about bloomin' time! After launching in Japan in September and in North America in November, Nintendo has finally launched its latest console, Gamecube, in UK and rest of Europe today. Only took them seven months! Today - technically - is also the day that Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is released, as a launch title for the Gamecube, but it was actually made available for purchase last week. Still, there was no way to play it until today, so make the most of the game once you have that shiny purple (or black) cube hooked up to your telly. It has also been an excruciating wait for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle in the UK and Europe - the game hit store shelves in Japan back in December and in North America in February. Suffice to say, us European fans have the patience of saints! Happy Gamecube Launch Day!
  18. Well, this is it. The day that everyone in Europe and Japan gets Sonic Adventure 2. If you aren't considering getting SA2, why the hell not? All the coverage of the sequel (that appeared here FIRST ^_-) must have convinced you by now to go out and shell out a mere £40 in exchange for the best Sonic game to date. One last thing about the SA2 limited edition box set: we recently heard that fans in North America will be able to buy the set, after it was initially revealed for a Japanese release. But European gamers do not fret, because if you haven't bought SA2 yet, DON'T! Why? Because the limited edition box set WILL make it to UK shores! The box, a special edition Sonic music CD, a Sonic history book, a gold Sonic coin, and of course the game, will be selling TONIGHT at www.dreamcast-europe.com for £40! The same price as a normal game! The one catch - there are only 200 box sets. So get a box - like I definitely will - and be one of the lucky 200 to grab one. You can only purchase the box set at dreamcast-europe.com's online store, and the copies will become available from midnight onwards! So get those notes ready! I'll see you at the mad rush! Source: Sega Europe
  19. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles have made their way onto the North American and European Phantasy Star Online servers! We weren't sure if they were going to appear after we heard the news that they'd cameo on the Japanese version, but this is great news! You can find the Triple Threat - as well as Dr. Eggman - on the Pioneer 2. You'll notice that Crush 40's 'Open Your Heart', the theme to Sonic Adventure, is also playing in the background. How cool is that!? Sonic and co will be present during the blue blur's Anniversary week.
  20. I know that plans change all the time in any endeavor especially comics. After reading Karl Bollers plans for the comics from SonicHQ, I wonder what were the original intentions of the writers who worked Archie? What were original plans? Ans what directions that they wanted to take the story in?

  25. Hey all, first time poster here wanting to show off an interesting piece of history I purchased today. Found a roughly 4 by 5 foot tall sonic wall mounted standee based on what I can confidently assume is the sonic 1 master system/game gear box art. I only know that this piece is over 25 years old, and that it was used as an in-store display at a game store. I’m aware this is unofficial or I’m assuming it is, but was a unique item I’ve never seen nonetheless!
