When you think about great Sonic music, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Game Gear (and Master System, don’cha know?) isn’t usually the game that comes to mind. That’s nothing to do with how good the music is, though – the little S2 has some real forgotten classics.
French jammer SongeReReveur hasn’t forgotten, though. We featured him last year for his mellow rendition of Sky High Zone – that and a somewhat… different Marble Zone – and he recently returned to Sonic with another Sonic 2 gem.
This time it’s Green Hills Zone, which was famously re-jigged for the European and Asian versions of Sonic CD (as well as the worldwide re-releases later this year). SongeLeReveur has a habit of taking his themes in a different direction than most, and this dreamy track is no exception.
YouTube user Eyspire has uploaded a video of a project in the works involving Sonic the Hedgehog 2 zones in 3D, and judging by the video, it looks amazing, but would you believe this is being made for satire use?
This is the result of many hours of persistance during my spare time over the last fortnight. As I played through the original Sonic 2 on a genesis emulator, I snapped screenshots along the way, and recreated the levels in true 3D. using textures from the game. Imagine if the Sonic Team made something along these lines!
This is a fan-made animation. It’s part of a satire series i’m working on, this is just a segmented portion.
Great work Eyspire! We’ll keep an eye out for the final product.
What do you guys and gals think of Eyspire’s work?
SEGA France have posted the above video on their Blue Room blog of a promotional train they used back in 1992 to give people a hands on test of all the latest games on Mega Drive, Game Gear and Master System. You could even have a look at the guts of a Mega Drive and watch TV on the Game Gears TV Tuner. Good to see a train with no-one on it complaining about stuff, this trains full of people with their mouths open but only because they’re in shock and awe but who can blame them?
It looks like an event called the Euro Challenge 92 was also held as possibly a gaming competition of sorts, we’ve found this gold pin that was likely the prize for besting the challenge.
