Second Toy Maker Hints At A Sonic Racer Game

Following on from Zappies claiming that a new Sonic racer was on the way, now a second toy maker has also hinted that a Sonic racer is in development.

At the New York Toy Fair, Diamond Select Toys have revealed their new line of Sonic toys, during an interview with Pixel Dan, when talking about the Sonic toys, the toy fair rep said the following.

“There are some minifigures […] some come with diorama pieces you’re going to build a race track from the game…

Whilst it’s possible that this is in relation to ASRT or a past racer game, it seems very unlikely that this is for a previous racing title since they’re several years old now. The fact it mentions racetrack suggests that it is in vehicles so it’s unlikely that these would be Sonic R related products.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSliyT8fAY0

The Sonic section begins at 8:32 and the ‘from the game’ line starts at around 9:00.

So what do you think? The rumours are certainly starting to add up now aren’t they?

This Sonic 2 Hack Adds Forces Physics, Works As Well As You’d Expect

We can all talk about the wonkiness of ‘My Saturday Morning Apocalypse’ adventure Sonic Forces all day long – perhaps never as concisely as our expert TSS Review, of course – but seeing its physics baked into another Sonic game really hammers home some of the gameplay issues that were prominent in the 2017 release. Namco and Sega bring Pac-Man over to Sonic Dash

In a couple of silly tweets, it seems Sonic has called Pac-Man to come over and celebrate the 5th anniversary of Sonic Dash and after saying hi to himself and playing with….an arcade machine, Pac-Man has taken the call and decided to join the party. Two stinky new villains revealed IDW’s Sonic comic, plus other details

Sonic’s extensive rogues gallery will be getting some new additions in the IDW comics this April: the skunk brothers Rough and Tumble. This pair of malicious mephitidaes will be antagonizing Sonic and Knuckles in the series’ third issue.

Kotaku interviewed the comic’s associate editor David Marriotte, who said that the new villains aren’t exactly masterminds, meaning we shouldn’t expect them to be hatching any grand schemes any time soon. He also confirmed that they are “independent agents,” though did hint that they could become henchman down the line. So it may be safe to speculate that they’ll end up working for Dr. Eggman eventually.

Rough’s finalized concept sheet
Tumble’s final concept sheet

Marriotte also talked about how new comic characters are designed: they are first described by writer Ian Flynn in a few paragraphs, then they are designed by one of the comic’s artists, and then they are sent to SEGA for approval. After some back and forth between IDW and SEGA, the characters are fleshed out and finalized. According to Kotaku, the characters used to be more heavily clothed, had less defined eyes, and Tumble use to look a lot more rabid.

Meanwhile, in a Game Informer interview released yesterday, Ian Flynn confirmed that the IDW comics will be a fresh start focused on story elements and characters from the games. Early issues will feature stories that are light on world-building and lore, but heavy on adventure and cinematic action. Despite starting with “bite-sized” stories, Flynn also confirmed that these stories will start building up to a surprise that will pay off within the comic’s first year. This surprise will be an obscure antagonist that hardcore fans may be able to guess, but casual fans will find new and exciting. You can find the full interview, which goes into more detail about Flynn’s plans as well as his past, here.

Flynn later clarified on Twitter that he doesn’t want to front load a new, fast paced book with lore, and that he wanted to keep things game-centric to make the comic recognizable to casual fans. Once the tone is set, he will get into bigger arcs and begin exploring the characters.

IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog will launch April 4, and release a new issue every week for its first four weeks before going monthly with issue 5.

Diamond Select Toys Throws Hat Into Sonic Toy Market

Diamond Select Toys have been responsible for some very well done toy lines based on pre-existing licensed products such as Ghostbusters and Marvel. Well with New York Toy Fair just a few days away they have just announced that they will be making a new line of Sonic toys.

The first products will be on display at the International Toy Fair in New York City, with a focus on the core Sonic characters — the speedy hedgehog Sonic, the energetic Amy, Tails the two-tailed flying fox, Knuckles the powerful Echidna, Shadow the anti-hero hedgehog, Metal Sonic the evil robot hedgehog, and the mustachioed mastermind Dr. Eggman. Product categories include Gallery PVC dioramas, Minimates block figures, Vinimates vinyl figures and PVC mini-figures with collect-and-connect racetracks.

I’ll let you guys decide if you want to add that racetracks bit to the racer game rumour pile.

The company goes on to say

“It’s an honor and a challenge to develop products based a world with such a long history and distinctive style,” said Diamond Select Toys president Chuck Terceira. “The Sonic Universe has so many possibilities that we are excited to explore – in our established categories, like Vinimates, Minimates and Gallery PVCs, but also the PVC mini-figure category, which we are diving into for the first time!”

So we have, diorama style figures, miniture block figures, mini figures and racer figures!

The toys are due for release around Christmas 2018, but they will apparently be on display at the New York Toy Fair which is next week.

We’ll update you as soon as we get more information.

Sonic Battle Racers Kickstarter Now Live

About a week ago we brought you news that a Sonic themed board game was in development. Well the Kickstarter for said board game is now live.

Sonic Battle Racers has two backing options at the time of writing.

  1. Pledge $10 (or more): No Reward.
  2. Pledge $100: The Base game + Kickstarter Exclusive Super Sonic playable Piece + Kickstarter Exclusive physical badnik pieces + any stretch goals.

The game itself is essentially a race, with players attempting to win against several other opponents whilst dodging badniks and other traps. Included in the game are several badnik pieces which will not be available at retail to accompany Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman.

There are also promises of expansion packs to come at a later date but these are not included in the Kickstarter.

Blaze, Sticks and Shadow playable pieces are stretch goals, however only Blaze and Sticks are included in the $100 pledge, you have to purchase Shadow separately.

So what do you think? Going to back this game? Let us know in the comments.

Sonic The Hedgehog Totaku Figure Revealed

During the London Toy Fair, Think Geek revealed a new line of video-game based figures entitled ‘Totaku’, along with a report that a Sonic figure would also be joining the line at a later date. Which was supported by a silhouette outline of Sonic on the Totaku website.

Well it appears that the figure was indeed at the London Toy Fair as toy blogger Idle Hands managed to snag a few cheeky photos of it.

We can now also reveal some details and clear up some misconceptions about this figure line.

  • The figures are made by Think Geek, they are not made by Sony.
  • They are not a Sony exclusive line, Sony characters are just wave 1, Microsoft and other IP’s are joining later in the series.
  • The bases are connectable, meaning you can create your own diorama’s with multiple figures.

No release date has been confirmed yet, but keep checking TSS and we’ll post more details as and when we get them.

Toy Maker Zappies Claim New Sonic Racing Game for 2018

Over in Nuremberg, the annual Spielwarenmesse toy fair is underway and as usual the toy makers are showing off their new toys for release later this year. Well, one such toy maker has just added fuel to a fire which had been virtually extinguished earlier this week.

Zappies who were responsible for a number of All Stars Racing Transformed toys way back when the game was first release were at the convention and have allegedly told Spindash.de that there is a third Sonic racing game on the way!

Whilst there is no outright proof of such a game, what strongly supports it is that their booth is full of the original ASRT toys which went out of production years ago. They claim these are here as placeholders in a bid to give some retailers an idea as to what the new game and toys will look like.

This comes less than a week after a document from Sumo Digital was leaked which suggested a new ‘Kart Racer’ from a ‘Global IP’ was in development, and just days after Aaron Webber claimed that it wasn’t happening.

Keep checking TSS, hopefully we can get all this resolved very soon!

First4Figures Tease Modern Metal Sonic Statue

Despite reports that F4F were looking to cancel their Sonic line, it seems there might be one last gasp effort to bring life to it once more.

In a Facebook post discovered only just now, First4Figures recently asked members of their collectors club to vote on designs for a new Modern Metal Sonic Statue.

Based on the image, there are two design concepts being considered, however the poll also has options for ‘not interested in Metal Sonic’ which is currently the second most rated option!

Why did it take so long for people to notice? Might have something to do with the post going live on Christmas Day, when we’re all eating turkey and opening gifts.

Security Company Claims Official Sonic Mobile Games Leak Data

Last year, Sega made efforts to strengthen it’s position as a mobile game publisher with the launch of Sega Forever and the release of Sonic Forces: Speed Battle as well as a number of other non Sonic titles which saw a re-release onto mobile platforms.

Well… Some rather alarming claims have been made by a security company Pradeo who after performing a number of tests on Sega’s mobiles apps hosted on the Google Play store discovered that they had on average 15 security breaches per game and were also leaking users data.

It’s not all Sega games which are affected. Based on the report it’s only Sonic titles… they are as follows.

  • Sonic Dash 1.
  • Sonic Dash 2.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog.

Some of the issues the report highlights are as follows.

  • The 3 Apps geolocate users and relay their position.
  • The 3 Apps leak device data.
  • Data are sent to an average of 11 distant servers including 3 uncertified ones.
  • The 3 Apps feature an average of 15 OWASP vulnerabilities.

Now some of these might be explained away, e.g. the geolocate data could be used for marketing and promotional purposes e.g. if a user is playing in a region which has a promotion running, show adverts for that promotion.

However, there are still some major problems that this report brings to light, mainly that the games are according to Pradeo’s team “are sending information to 3 uncertified servers of which 2 are a variant of Android/Inmobi.D, and represent a potential threat.

You can read the full report on Pradeo’s website which goes into more detail on the security flaws and concerns that their team found.

Sega has since responded and said that they are investigating the claims.

Another Cover Revealed for IDW Sonic #1

Solicits are now almost within touching distance, but in the meantime there’s been another cover reveal!

This is another alternate cover for issue 1, but this time it’s by an artist completely new to the franchise. This lovely cover of Sonic freeing animals with Tails acting as the literal wingman was done by Nathalie Fourdraine.

Along with the cover, some minor details about the upcoming four issues in April were noted, some of which have not been divulged before now. Aside from what we know, the following was revealed.

  • Issue one will be illustrated by Sonic veteran Tracy Yardley, who was revealed with the last cover released.
  • The next three issues will each have a different artist, and once the book goes monthly there will be rotating art teams.
  • Finally, and perhaps most interestingly, each of the first four issues focuses on Sonic with one of his classic allies, issue one being focused on Tails.

There’s bound to be a big surge of news within the next couple of days, so make sure you keep an eye on the Sonic Stadium for that!

Sonic Mania’s Soundtrack Officially Released on Digital Platforms

As of today, Sonic Mania’s soundtrack is no longer a vinyl exclusive, as it has finally hit digital music platforms as Sonic Mania Selected Edition. This version of the soundtrack is more comprehensive than the vinyl, containing all forty-seven music tracks created for the game. The soundtrack can be downloaded for $15.99 on iTunes, $14.49 on Google Play, and $18.99 on Amazon. Individual tracks can be had for $1.29, $0.99 and $1.29 on each service respectively.

While the soundtrack is pretty comprehensive, there is a reason why it is called the “Selected Edition”. The album lacks the tracks that were originally composed for Sonic 1 and 2.

Sonic 3D Blast: Director’s Cut Released onto Steam Workshop

Just in time for Christmas, Sonic 3D Blast: Director’s Cut has been put onto the Steam Workshop for everyone to play.

While it may seem like it ought to be another run-of-the-mill mod, there’s one factor that makes this project stand out; this was done by Jon Burton, founder of Traveller’s Tales and programmer on the original Sonic 3D Blast itself way back in 1996!

Over the past year, Burton (via his Youtube channel Gamehut) has been revealing coding secrets and tricks on Sonic 3D Blast and other classic TT games many would recognise, and as part of that he took it on himself to do some tweaks to the game to make it an overall better experience. Here’s a list of some of the modifications that this contains;

  • Super Sonic implemented into regular gameplay.
  • A time attack mode.
  • A level editor.
  • A “new” enemy (actually one that was always in the code but left unused in the final game).
  • A save game password system.
  • An overworld map screen for getting level to level.
  • Improved controls.
  • Bug Fixes.
  • Other miscellaneous gameplay changes, including alterations to the Flicky indicators and the behaviour of the Flickies themselves.

This game is a patch for the mod-friendly SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics, so make sure you own that before trying it out if you’re interested. The patch can be downloaded here on the Steam Workshop for free.

If you’ve ever been curious as to how a developer would improve their work in hindsight, or just fancy playing Sonic 3D Blast in a way you never have before, this is something you might want to try out for yourself!

Super Sonic DLC Crashlands into Sonic Forces, Free for a Limited Time

A series staple since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 over twenty-five years ago right up to the recent Sonic Mania, either earning the seven Chaos Emeralds or clearing the game’s story often yielded the highly coveted reward of Super transformation. From there, simply collect fifty rings mid-stage, transform, and blast off with ring-fueled invincibility and faster speeds.

While oddly absent from the game’s initial release over a month ago, Sonic Forces is finally bringing in this long loved franchise staple at long last as free downloadable content… unfortunately, with a catch that is already drawing community backlash.

New Sonic Toys For 2018

In what could be argued as being the first big reveal for 2018. Tomy has updated their re-seller catalogue for 2018 which includes a lot of brand new Sonic toys covering action figures and plushies.

With regards to action figures we have a new a classic Amy pack which comes with a metal art plate and a Classic and Modern Eggman pack which also comes with an art plate.

But more interestingly, Zavok is finally getting a figure and Infinite is also getting the action figure treatment along with some Chao accessories.

More modern based figures, but the most interesting thing on show here is the comic book packs, you see… that doesn’t appear to be an Archie or IDW comic book, but something completely new!

Terror, excitement, confusion… all in one page. On the one hand with have the awesome looking classic Sonic figure, and the utterly stunning looking Super Sonic plush…. Only to find Amy and Vector who appears to be hitch hiking.

More plush toys planned, this time we see a new Classic Eggman and an Evil Chao figure join the line! Also is it just me or is Knuckles giving Shadow a bit of a look there?

More on these as and when we get the details in.
