Sonic N Launches to Middling Review Reception

    First review pulls no punches.

Sonic's debut on the Nokia N-Gage mobile phone seems to be getting off to a rocky start, as the first review of Sonic N hits the internet. It seems that the device's screen is causing a lot of problems for the speedy platform game.

IGN writes that, although the game - a port of Sonic Advance on the GBA - has "slick level design and a great assortment of characters... the N-Gage's screen ratio just doesn't work well for the speed-intensive Sonic franchise. When bolting through a level at high-speeds you must be able to see a good distance ahead in order to avoid approaching danger, and unfortunately the N-Gage's vertically biased screen makes this extremely frustrating."

According to the review, the options available to remedy this issue aren't great either - with a zoom-out setting that offers players a full-screen 'GBA' style view, only letterboxed due to the N-Gage's vertical screen. This means that graphics end up becoming "crappy and distorted".

Sound was also mentioned as a slight downside, with the "light-hearted and catchy tunes" dampened by "a low quality sample rate". The review also notes the lack of native N-Gage platform features too, such as 'Arena' and multiplayer modes, suggesting that the replay value would have been improved if SEGA added the ability for N-Gage players to add online 'Shadow Racing'.

All in all, Sonic N gets a 6/10 from IGN - an 'Okay' grade, but really not fantastic considering the quality of the same game on offer for Nintendo's system years ago.

It seems that Sonic advance is only good on the GBA. Then again, this is IGN we are talking about, it's not like they have made the best sonic reviews *cough*SA2B*cough*.

Maybe if they did add some online multiplayer to it, then there would be more of a point to buying the game instead of the GBA version. I wonder if they will make a Sonic Advance 2 for this thing...

That seems like it would be really hard to see... I think the GBA version is much better! And they used the same cover/box art as Sonic Advance!

GBA 3, N-Gage 1. :cool_2003: The simple fact is that nothing can really save N-Gage now. See Games Radar at www.gamesradar.com, they tell you about the 'disappointing' launch. Hashed ports of GBA games will only serve to kill of the N-Gage anyway. as one of my 'friends' said though, he would like a handheld console that is also a phone. The really sad thing here is that it's not even competent as a phone... :bigsmile_2003:

I agree with Knux and Sonic UK... and everyone else at the time of speaking. :blink1_2003:

Sonic N drools, Sonic Advance rules. And they'll probably try a Sonic Advance 2 conversion by the time GBA fans (like me) have Battle and Advance 3.

N-Gage really needs to pull it's socks up in order to compete with the GBA. As it stands, the N-gage will got the way of the Game Gear. :cry_2003:

I cry for Game Gear - not for N-Gage. End of story.

:cry_2003: Why can't Nokia be happy with the phenomenal sales figures it already has ?

Why do they have to try and destroy things for GBA as well ?

I shall dance when the N-Gage dies and you should too !
