New Sonic Heroes Preview Praises Level Design and Camerawork

Team Sonic has its stuff together, but Team Dark needs improvement.

Sonic Heroes was available for press and public to playtest at the Tokyo Game Show this month, and gaming website IGN is the first to come back with some hands-on impressions on how the game is shaping up. It seems to be a tale of two halves, with one level being praised and another assessed as 'needing improvement'.

In the preview, IGN writes, "The Tokyo Game Show version of the game featured the same level [as the E3 2003 demo] and its team of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, but also had another level featuring Shadow, Rouge and E-102."

    Quote

We first tried out Sonic, Tails and Knuckles level and were very much impressed. The level moves fast, has lots of sections to show off the series' trademark blazing speed, and offers up good chances to make use of each character's abilities.

We honestly can't think of a single complaint about this level, aside from a few times where controlling the characters can become difficult. Camerawork, in particular, seems to be superb, with the occasional difficulties from E3 having apparently been cleared up. If the entire game ends up being like this level, we'll be in Sonic heaven later this year.

The other level was a different story. We're pretty sure it was just early, but the level had lots of camera problems and control issues. We kept on falling to our deaths in this level, sometimes because we made stupid mistakes but more often because the rough camera work and twitchy controls got in the way.

Despite some cool sequences in this level, there's definitely room for improvement, and we hope Sonic Team can polish this level and all other levels to the same state as featured in the first level.

Beyond the two stages, IGN also took a look at the three console versions independently and tried to spot any differences. Control-wise, there wasn't much separating the Gamecube, Xbox or PS2 versions, but graphically the site noted that the PS2 build looked a lot worse - "poor image quality, slowdown and occasional collision breakdowns, all of which seem to be missing from the Xbox and Gamecube versions of the demo."

Overall, the preview seems to be quite positive. We'll be able to learn more about the game as more impressions come out over the coming weeks and months.

PS2 is only lagging behind for suspense before the miracle happens, so when it is released it will rule the most.

It's a preview, actually, not a review. And it's E-123 Omega, not E-102 Gamma. Silly IGN.

Sounds pretty cool then, with easily fixed issues brought up there. Only have to ponder about how wide-ranging the levels will be graphically, and if the music will be classic Sonic tunes or of the SA2 rock style.

    And, er, go X-Box?

What's this?! IGN saying something good about a Sonic game?! That must mean a VERY good thing. Oh, and I'm not surprised about the PS2 thing, GCN and Xbox are way more better. Sorry PS2 fans.
