  • Sonic Shorts Returns After 11 Years With Volume 9

The fan-made Sonic animation compilation is back!

Sonic Paradox's sixteen-year old fan-animated series, Sonic Shorts, is back just in time to celebrate Sonic's thirty-third anniversary! On Twitter, Sonic Paradox has described the new short as "a 40 minute presentation," though whether this will actually be 40 minutes long or if this is just a goof to make it sound like an important Nintend Direct-esque presentation, well...I guess we'll see.

The short will feature work from a variety of creators, including many animators and voice actors. Legendary Sonic animator TheWax70 and Youtube animator Doobus Goobus are among them, though you can check out a full list later in this article.

The short is set to debut soon, at 5PM EST on Sonic Paradox's Youtube channel. The episode will also be on Newgrounds if you want to watch it the way we did back in the day. We don't have a link to the Newgrounds version, though I expect it'll be available on the series page here. You can watch the Youtube version below:

For anyone new to Sonic Shorts: it's basically a series of comedy Sonic shorts, typically animated in Adobe Flash, and structured kind of like Robot Chicken. Each short is generally a minute or less, with a brief moment of television static acting as a transition. Back in the late 2000s/early 2010s it was a fixture in the Sonic fan community. I was among the people who'd watch it back in the day, though I generally didn't keep up with each release. The first episode debuted in 2008, and the last one was released in 2013. It's pretty cool having a new one!

You can check out the short's list of creatives below:

This feels like saying hello to an old friend. I will be watching on Newgrounds for the full "it's 2008" experience.

Not really into this "Robot Chicken" style of shows, but it was still cool to see all those different styles of animation.

The Pinball short was probably my favourite (Poor Tails!).

This was worth waiting for, as I laughed my butt off watching these shorts! This was very funny as heck!

I guess the parts with the butterfly robot, I guess that might have to do with a temporal version of the Butterfly Effect?

Is Sonic Shorts really that old? And has it really been that long since the last one? Dear goodness, I'm getting old.

Can't believe it's been 11 years since the last one.  Man, this series brings back so many good memories!  I just watched this recent set of shorts and they are just as funny as the old shorts!  Definitely the perfect gift for Sonic's birthday!

Man, its like nothing changed. I was a little worried that TheWax would have to carry the whole thing, but we've got 40 minutes of stuff from a wide variety of artists, and I love it. The quality of the shorts is up and down, but that's sort of what you sign up for with this, and I think it's fantastic. I liked the butterfly effect running gag, and the little throwbacks to previous shorts made me smile. I had to explain to my wife why I was laughing at Biblically Accurate Omochao. It makes me want to blow the dust off of Flash CS5 and contribute something to this community for once.

Fun fact: Doobus McGoobus animated one of the shorts.

Another fact: Lythero saved Doobus’ cat by having him make this:
