How did you see Knuckles before SA?

I think Knuckles has always had a relaxed streak to him (SA2 S&K) But he was also of a short temper. I personally believe that he laughed upon first encounter because he heard all these terrible things about sonic from Robotnik, then this short round hedgehog appears. he probably thought the battle would be easy! I don't really see a huge difference between Knuckles in the original games and in the SA series. sonic 06 and later, definitely!

I saw him as the guy who laughed at me before sending me to the next stage or boss or whatever.

My first impression of Knuckles is kind of how I see Proto Man in the Mega Man games. He was the cool, loner character, except he wasn't the overly serious type; He was a trickster (Unlike Proto Man). Honestly, I think he was characterized pretty well in the OVA (Dubbed). Sadly, that characterization was also misused to develop his character in Sonic Adventure. He was definitely a cooler character.

Amy could use some work too. I agree with Gaming Misfit, she's much better as a damsel in distress.

I never saw Knuckles before SA. I first saw him in SA2 and after that Sonic X came out. I thought he was cool than. He always stayed at that line between serious but not too serious to be considered bland or boring. Always talking about the Master Emerald and how he had to protect it. I loved how he would always end up far from the Heroes and meet up with them on certain occassions when their ideals clashed. It happened in SA2, it happend all throughout the beginning seasons of X. I loved his character. Got excited, SUPER excited whenever he showed up.

Nowadays, I'm a bit disheartened by the fact that I can't get excited over him showing up anymore. All of what I liked about him was taken away.

Looking at Knuckles before Sonic Adventure is hard for me to do, since Sonic Adventure was my first Sonic game, and my real exposure to him was in Sonic X. To be honest, it's challenging for me to view him differently pre Sonic Adventure(or at least Adventure 2.) When I see Knuckles in Sonic 3, I see a gullible, yet tough-as-nails badass. Sonic Adventure kind of continued that I guess, mainly for his theme song( admittedly biased) but his voice actor did a pretty meh job, not utilizing all that much emotion, so I didn't really get the tough-as-nails impression as I would in Sonic 3. Knuckles in Sonic Adventure 2 is exactly how I picture him as I do in Sonic 3. He gets easily distracted when the Master Emerald is stolen, bur he makes it his own mission to get it back, plus Scott Dreier fits the character like a glove, sounding tough and not too deep. Whenever I see Knuckles in my head, it's Scott Dreier doing the voice, and it would match Sonic 3 well IMO if there was dialogue in that game.

My first encounter with Knuckles was in Sonic Adventure actually, so my opinion is a bit biased. I think he would have been a relaxed, but short tempered type. I think he would have been more goofy but not too silly to be like sonic. Apparently, he really enjoyed laughing at pranks . He always seemed to be kinda simple minded (but not stupid) and liked to have life to be peaceful and the same way forever.  I think that because he does not seem to enjoy change that much.

I think Knuckles' guile has been completely downplayed since Adventure, in fact, he's not even anything like he was in Sonic 3 nowadays. In Sonic 3, whilst Knuckles was tough, he wasn't some Knucklehead like he is now. He was fast, intelligent (despite being tricked he was constantly outpacing Sonic and setting off ingenious traps) and protective of his realm.

I always thought of him like a tribal person who only wanted to protect his sacred home. Whilst this did exist in Sonic Adventure, it has never been featured ever again since. Now he just kind of exists, for no real reason expect that he is popular. To be honest, I've always seen him in a light similiar to Shadow. Neither character really works outside their narrative environment, yet they are so popular they are constantly being brought back for no reason. Yet whilst Shadow at least has the rivalry thing going on, Knuckles doesn't even have that anymore.

On a personal note, am I the only one who thought Knuckles was supposed to be slightly insane pre Sonic Adventure? He's constantly laughing to himself whenever he does anything in the classic games. Even in Sonic Drift 2's Title Screen. What's funny about Sonic Drift 2? Knuckles is mad!

Before Sonic Adventure, Knuckles seemed more like a more serious character as people have said before. He was more serious about his job and had a more just serious tone about him because you could take him seriously. If he said something he meant it. These days, they keep trying to turn Knuckles more into a joke character that Sonic and others just want to make fun of instead of take seriously anymore. While he may be funny in some ways, turning him into a complete joke isn't how I would like to see him made now. Making fun of another character because he may not have as much common sense or book smarts as someone else seems kind of mean to me honestly.

totally agreed! No more making fun of Knuckles ya hear!?!

I hate how he is "abused" in recent games.. particularly in Sonic generations....

that is THE greatest insult that can be given to our wonderful Echidna friend!! To be whammed into a tree by a girl who barely even moved her arms!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly though, I wish they would give him some more dignity nowadays :).

Definately. Knuckles has just been abused and made fun of in recent games and comics alike. He has been turned into someone that could have been a serious threat or real tough rival into just a person that is there to joke at his lack of the real world due to his solitude or gullibility. He may be gullible, but at the same time, he isn't corrupted from the outside world as much, aka he is kind of like a young kid who believes most things due to not knowing any better. He obviously would know better now from experience, but to keep ragging on him and making him more of someone to laugh at  rather than another rival to sonic is a bit sad.

I'm not gonna lie, I don't like how Knuckles has been treated in the recent games either, but that's what's so funny about that scene: tough Knuckles got shoved into a tree and knocked unconscious by Amy, who barely moved her arms :D Knuckles in the newer games is like a guilty pleasure for me: I don't like Dan Green or Travis W. as Knuckles, but it's not too big of a deal to me if they try to make him into a comic relief character, as long as I still get the impression of tough and cool from Knuckles. They just need to start handling him better in the newer games by giving him a bigger role, or at least not make him seem useless.

I do have to be honest though, I do think that scene is funny... and I can watch it over and over...But I just wish they'd give him some more respect sometimes :(.

Not to say that that moment wasn't a slight embarrassment for ol' Knux there, but that girl does have the strength to use a giant eff-off squeaky hammer to smash robots to pieces just as easily as everyone else.

Oh, definitely. I'm hoping Knuckles is utilized somewhat well in the plot to Lost World, as long as they don't make him seem too useless.

I didn't. I never saw Knuckles before SA(2) to be accurate.

Personally, my headcanon of him has him being a combination of Comically Serious and a stickler to some really vague "traditions" that remain from the golden age of the Echidna Civilization, at least until Perfect Chaos went all shaboozey on it. He would be competent in a fist fight and would be rather inquisitive of ancient history, but at the same time would be a stickler to his vague traditions that only make sense to him (kinda like how Rolf from Ed Edd N Eddy had a bunch of weird traditions that weirded everyone out) and would be somewhat inept with "modern" lingo and oftentimes gets into trouble for not understanding some kind of modern thing, which either left him in an embarrassing situation, or the thing in question buried under a thick slab of concrete after it pisses him off.

Yeah, this right here is sort of the thing. I don't mind knuckles being some comedic relief in the series at all. He can be funny, since his lack of knowledge of how everything in the outside works can be easily exploited. However, he does seem to get a lack of respect at times that he did originally have, at least in my opinion.

I liked the Knuckles appearance in Sonic 3 & Knuckles best. I wasn't necessarily mad at how he was portrayed in SA and beyond but, I just liked the Genesis Knuckles better. He seemed like a silent badass who was an awesome rival to Sonic. Now he kinda just seems like a side character with a lessened rival role.

The Naive, cocky type that takes his job seriously enough to believe any outsider that mentions anyone trying to keep him from doing his job and stop at nothing for the sake of doing said job.

Well as a kid alongside the games, I mainly read the Fleetway comics. So I suppose in my head I'd have attributed most of his personality to that. Which is fair enough, his personality in the Fleetway comics is relatively close to how he's portrayed in the Adventure series.

I thought that he was a girl ( I was 6 ) until I caught up with the series with Sonic Heroes. A tough, no nonsense, badass attitude, hot- tempted, but a softie inside female animal.

Then I heard his voice.....

Looks like this is your cue, Knucklesgirl.

That's quite interesting. I've come across people that thought Tails was a girl, but Knuckles? You're the first person I've seen to get that gender mixed up with Knuckles. :D

Let me guess: it was the dreadlocks that made you think he was a girl?

Weird enough, I have heard of people thinking he was a girl... is it perhaps because he turns pink in hyper mode? We may never know for sure.... blink.png .

Anyway, I always thought he was a guy character. Mostly because my first encounter with him was in Sonic Adventure, where he has a guys voice. But, in all reality, his official artwork looks masculine and such. plus his profile makes it pretty clear he is a guy. But everyone has their "first impression", For example, I thought Amy was like, 22 and Sonic was 20 something too.... ya know..laugh.png

Honestly, it is true that a lot of people think Tails is a girl. So much so, that they call Tails a "cute boy fox with two tails"in the instruction manuals to emphasize that he is, in fact, a boy :).

I am one of those people who thought Tails was a girl. I mean she he looked so cute in Sonic 2....

As for Knuckles, I thought he was a really cool badass character in Sonic 3&K. I mean he attacked Sonic, stole the chaos emeralds and set numerous traps for Sonic and Tails. He definitely seemed like an equal to Sonic.

I have never liked the whole 'Knuckles is an idiot' portrayal since Sonic Adventure. He is a strong character and I hope he is portrayed in a far better light from Sonic Lost World onwards.

Yes! I totally agree. I hate the abuse Knuckles gets from Sega nowadays.
