Did next gen never happen?

With Sonic 4 to be a direct sequil to S&K this made me start thinking: Could everything SA1 and onward be no longer canon. It's a possibility that this is the case after all it would make sense seeing as how next gen has so many differencess it may very well be part of another continuity. So...what do you think.

Well, was there anything to suggest that Sonic Adventure followed on from S3&K? If not, then it's entirely possible that Sonic 4 could slot into the gap between the two games.

I highly doubt it, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has been stated to be a direct sequel to Sonic & Knuckles, and the entire Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy is canon to the modern games. There's plenty of things that could have happened in the time span between Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure, and this could merely be one of those happenings - after all, Mecha Sonic's mysterious appearance in Final Egg never still hasn't obtained an explanation yet.

As for them being part of another continuity altogether - no. Amy and Metal Sonic both infer to the events of Sonic the Hedgehog CD in Sonic Adventure, Knuckles' role of guarding the Master Emerald atop Angel Island is still kept (introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 3), and he hints towards Mushroom Hill (from Sonic & Knuckles) in Sonic Heroes. Plenty of other past events from previous games have been either alluded to or explicitly referred to - after all, they're still part of the Sonic Team canon.

Oh, and if "Next-gen" is referring to the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog, then yes. It never chronologically happened, although elements introduced in that game are still canon. (Such as the country of Soleanna, whom Wentos from Sonic World Adfventure seems to have as his nationality.)

They're still using the modern designs of Sonic/Eggman in Sonic 4 and post-Adventure characters are appearing in other games like SASASR. If there was going to be a massive reboot they would have done so across all games.

I've never seen a list of differences that's anything more than misconceptions, easily explained differences, and fiddly details on par with Sonic's eye color changing.
