What kind of game genre do you think Classic Sonic games would work best in in terms of being 3D?

So, without regard to Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic's gameplay style is said to work best in terms of 2D gameplay. I guess I could say I don't blame people who think that. However, Classic Sonic has done 3D before, in games like Sonic World from Sonic Jam, Sonic R and maybe Sonic the Fighters. (Not counting Sonic 3D Blast, which is isometric and thus just 2D, or so I read and Sonic X-treme, which never came out as it was cancelled). We might also count Classic Sonic's mode in Christmas Nights, which is part of a different franchise altogether. In terms of Sonic World/Sonic Jam, Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters, those are all spinoffs, with different genres. They are not really the same as the famous 2D Classic Sonic gameplay out there. Sonic Jam was a compilation game, Sonic R was a racing game and Sonic the Fighters was a fighting game, and Sonic's mode in Christmas Nights was not even part of the game's main story.

Anyways, the thing I want to ask is this: Not counting mainline (and maybe spinoff) 2D Classic Sonic games, do you think 3D would work for any Sonic game that is of a different genre (like fighting and racing) or as a sub-mode/extra of another Sonic game (maybe Sonic) or a game in another Sega franchise? If you do, what genres of such 3D games that could feature or star Classic Sonic would you like to see?

Super Monkey Ball 😉

Maybe you could put a spin dash in the game?

Dang it! I forgot about Super Monkey Ball! LOL

Maybe it is because I was focusing on the older games that I missed that game, but hey...

In a lot of ways, what it's doing does have a degree of classic Sonic to it. You want a game about momentum, it sure is about that specifically!

That is a good point. Maybe I should try that game myself.

Now for me to wait to see if Sonic can work in 3D in other genres of games. (There is actually nothing wrong with what you said about Super Monkey Ball, in fact, it is must appreciated. I am just curious to know answers for the rest of what I asked if that is okay)

A Tails spinoff in his Biplane 'Tornado' would be great.

Robitnik is invading a small island for resources. Tails happens to be passing by, and takes on flying missions to protect the island.

Basically, the PS2 title 'Skygunner', in the Sonic universe.

Also, I think a proper Sonic RPG would work. Again, might need to be a spinoff starring another character.
