Ken Penders' Releases "Lara-Su Chronicles" Prologue Book After 13-Year Development

Former Sonic comics writer/artist Ken Penders has begun shipping orders of a prologue book for his upcoming solo project, "The Lara-Su Chronicles", thirteen years after the graphic novel series was first announced.

Titled "The Lara-Su Chronicles: Beginnings", the one-shot reportedly consists of a number of reprints from the classic Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics - namely, the "Mobius: 25 Years Later" story arc from issues #131 through #144 - along with a new short story by Penders himself that connects the events of the Archie comics to his new project.

Penders first revealed the "Lara-Su Chronicles" project in December 2011, following an acrimonious split from Archie Comics that led to a lengthy lawsuit regarding the ownership of characters created in the official Sonic the Hedgehog comic. The author announced then that he would redesign characters such as Julie-Su, Geoffrey St. John and others, and repurpose them as main characters for a brand new series, independent from SEGA's licensed universe.

In the decade since, nothing tangible had been published or sold - despite a number of updates from Penders' social media accounts and website - until an update last year announcing the release of "Beginnings". This past week, more information has been published about the book's print run and its availability, with some recipients on social media sharing their thoughts on the creative choices made in the original story that ties in with the Archie reprints.

It's, uh... it's pretty wild. A heads up, if you go looking for images online, some panels are a little bit NSFW(?).

Penders revealed yesterday that he has been seeing strong sales of the "Beginnings" book, noting that things are going "absolute gangbusters... I’ve received more orders in less than 24 hours than I have in some months during the pre-sale." So for some, it seems like the wait has been worth it.

Even if it’s not reprints from Sega themselves, I’m glad we got reprints of the Archie comic at all. To be honest, if we got official reprints, they might have some kind of content warning due to the stories “representing a direction that is no longer valid at Sega” and being “products of their time”.

The original content, on the other hand… let’s move on.

How in the world can he legally reprint and sell classic Sonic stories that obviously feature Sonic characters? Are the original inkers/colorists/letterers/etc. getting a cut? Did he have to edit the stories to change the names and species of characters?

It just blows my mind how he's able to do any of this.

At this point, he's digging his own grave, and I think he's officially dug so deep that he couldn't climb out if he wanted to.

Not if it's done by Ken Penders, we don't.

The fact that he's bold enough to reprint legit Archie Sonic comics with his weird Echidna fanfiction is like rubbing salt in a wound.  Ecspecially given he's one of the reasons the comic got cancled in the first place.  Not to mention he's also arguably one of the main reasons SEGA has so many mandates/restrictions on the franchise now.

I hope SEGA sues him for using licensed characters like Sonic & Knuckles without a license to do so!

Also he says he plans to reprint his Knuckles stories in a series of omnibuses. Which would definitely be a cause for a lawsuit as despite what he thinks, he doesn't own Knuckles The Echidna!

Hopefully people who bought this for the Archie Sonic material are disgusted by the inappropriate additions and never buy anything from Penders again!

I... I don't think this is legal. He owns the characters, not the comics themselves, right?

He doesn’t even own the Brotherhood of Echidnas and Finitevus either. Really the only characters in his original comics that he owns is Julie-Su, Lara-Su, and the Anti-Mobius characters prior to their overhaul.

Oh, and I guess the Sand Blasters and certain other characters too, but who really cares about them.

WTH! My eyes are hurting. These are supposed to be Echidnas? Does Ken Penders even realise that the way the pictures look noone can ever read his stuff in public. But maybe this is his intention. YUCK! 🤮🤢🤮🤮

I support Penders making bank off characters he created despite the shitshow than ensued because of it and the... dubious quality of the new work he's doing with them. It's a complicated situation, but on principle I stand with the man most directly responsible for creation rather than the companies that he worked for.

That all said, I simply cannot imagine reprinting the Archie comics is legal and something he will get away with. If he does, it's probably because it's such a small run that Sega and or Archie doesn't think the legal proceedings are worth the bad press.

To be fair, Ken isn't exactly an honest man, so I doubt his claims of "OMG PROFIT" are all that truthful.

I don't know how much of Ken's bullcrap is outright lying and how much is delusion and/or denial. When you're the center of your own universe, it's hard to accept the gravitational pull of reality.

God. I'd bleach my eyes but the images would still be imprinted on my brain.

I'll probably not like it anyway, considering Ken's weird choices that I am not a fan of, but I'll try go in with an open mind.

Aside from that though, IT'S OUT!?

So I've been quite vocal about this subject on X/Twitter for some time. Some of you guys might know me from there and/or from Reddit as well.

SEGA really should've dealt with him immediately after he tried to sue Bioware over Sonic Chronicles, which luckily was dismissed as he still had his case with Archie going on at the same time. SEGA's lack of foresight to not only shut Penders down, but also claim back a massive roster of characters, is something that will baffle me.

They could've just had these characters sitting in Limbo, or tweaked with them to make them better for the games/future comics. As long as Penders didn't have them, he couldn't lean on the Sonic branding for his media anymore. And, to be perfectly clean, that's ALL he has going for himself. He can claim all he likes that they're not linked, but they are. It's so blatantly obvious.

But my biggest issue with Ken isn't around the Sonic/SEGA stuff, but rather the disturbing justification he brings up when discussing matters such as Age of Consent and the frankly over the top nudity he's placing in his Lara-Su comics. Especially when these characters are underage.

How has he not been cancelled by people for this? How is this man going to use state laws in the USA as a way to justify a relationship like Sally x Geoff? That should be the stuff that people are going after him for. His abhorrent comments on matters like that, as well as going after Asexual people, claiming his critics are autistic, and using events like Ukraine and school shootings to promote his work.

THAT is what people should be using to cancel him.

Ken has definitely crossed several lines that he never should have crossed, and if fans legitimately AREN'T up in arms about that, then there's something wrong with the fandom.

I mean you can't "cancel" people who simply don't give a shit; and Penders made it clear he didn't 15 years ago.

I'm not saying WE should try to 'cancel' him so much as we need to speak out and say that This Is Not Okay. Hopefully Sega will realize just how poorly Penders' actions reflect on THEIR brand (especially to young and impressionable kids that don't yet know any better) and take whatever actions they are within legal standing to take.
