Sonic Mania New Patch 1.03

Mania has received a new PS4 patch (1.03). Steam has also received a new patch.

There are no patch notes as of yet.

I quickly played the PS4 version (took a screenshot below) and as you can see the super transformation is indeed now mapped to a different button (Triangle) just like in the previous Steam patch.

You also now get an extra life for every 50,000 points earned.

There's still some bugs in the new PS4 patch. For example AI Tails (when I played with Sonic) got stuck in ball-form when I beat the act2 boss of Green Hill). No idea if the patch has come to Xb1 or Switch yet.

Also worth noting, the leaderboards are now properly working on PS4 after being completely inaccessible since launch! Definitely looking forward to some friends competition now!

As a heads up, the PC patch unsurprisingly breaks mods.

Bad news is: MainMemory isn't planning to update his modloader for the game at this point, so it'd be worth backing up your .exe and data.rsdk files before updating, then copying the old files over the new ones after updating and putting Steam into offline mode.

There's also a way to downgrade to older versions using the Steam console.

Thankfully I have every version of the PC release backed up so far (and that includes the day-one online-only release too... don't ask)

The PC version's patch definitely fixed the Tails Flying Battery glitch for me.

Huh, they really did remove it.

Makes me legitimately wonder what the deal behind that easter egg was. Did they even have Dunkey's permission? Did Sega catch wind of it and order the devs to remove it? Was it implemented by one dev member and the rest of the team didn't know about it nor did they agree to it? A hilarious egg for sure, but definitely bizarre.

The patch could have been nothing but adding the Super Sonic button and it would have made the game so much more better.

...Well, that and making sure the music doesn't stop playing randomly, which is an often occurrence in Press Garden.

They fixed the leaderboards? Sweet.

Geez, took a bit longer than I expected, but at least I don't have to hold that against the game anymore. Easily the biggest and most obnoxious shortfall. (with spotty collision detection and music bugs being 2 and 3)

The alt Super Transformation button is also a godsend. I get wanting to be like the classics, but that is a quality of life improvement that these 2D games can't be without imo.

If Sega was offended by the Dunkey easter egg, I really hope they havn't found out about the 25th anniversary livestream easter egg.

The Dunkey easter egg was kinda weird though. To have a random shout out to a Youtuber in an official Sonic game, I wouldn't doubt SEGA didn't like that.

Imagine if in some Mario game, by inputting some very specific commands, you suddenly hear "Hey, I'm Grump! I'm Not So Grump! And we're the Game Grumps!" out of nowhere. That'd be freakin' weird.

Tbh, if nothing else, I feel the only valid reason to remove the Dunkey Easter Egg is out of fairness and respect for all their internet-celebrity fans.  Like why should this one guy, who wasn't even particularly KNOWN for his feelings on Sonic, to get a wink and a nod in such a special game, while others didn't?

It was definitely good fun and super funny, but it was born of convenience of the gag, rather than because Dunkey particularly "deserved" it.  Meanwhile, Heavy Rider's motobug being named Jimmy - that's a person-specific shout-out/easter egg that the person in question is deserving of and far more appropriate, etc.  The Dunkey reference is great, but I think the reason we were all enamoured by it was because we KNEW it was overstepping some bounds.  That's the sort of gag that should be kept for Sonic's social media creations, not the games themselves (see: Sonic and Eggman's "WHAT AM I WILLING TO PUT UP WITH TODAY?" Game Grumps reference during the twitter takeover day they did).

Considering the Mushroom Hill cheat code is a kind of memorable classic easter egg in itself though, it's a shame they couldn't have changed it to trigger something else appropriate though.

Yeah of all the things to be removed from the game, I think this is fine, and I like Dunkey. Now if they went ahead and did something else like remove the livestream sound effect after the Studiopolis 2 boss, it'd be pretty dumb

Well, it wasn't entirely weird. Dunkey is a Sonic fan, and that specific shout-out was also the same sound he made when using those boosters, when he was talking about Sonic 3 in his Best of 2016 video.

Odds are, someone on the dev team was a fan of Dunkey, and sneaked that into the game. When everyone noticed, SEGA took action to remove it, for whatever reason.

I guess we can say goodbye to the missing cutscenes. Such a shame they didn't want to give the latest touch to the game :(

Yesterday I played it from the beginning for the 7th time, I think. I definitely get bored when I reach Stardust. I really want to leave that zone as fast as possible. Fortunately then there's Hidrocity, and only Metallic Madness makes me want to skip again.

I'm definitely not a Sonic CD guy ^_^U

That´s interesting. I usually play like: Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Studiopolis and I feel like not really doing Flying Battery.

Then: Press Garden, Stardust Speedway, Hydrocity (and not Mirage Saloon)

And then again: Oil Ocean to Titanic Monarch.

I believe the reason why I am not much into the Flying Battery/Mirage Saloon is the high possibility of cheap death. I like Mirage Saloon Act 2 though.

Did they get rid of the trick in Special Stage 5 that makes the UFO go backwards? I tried it and it considered going backwards for a split second, but then just kept going the normal way.

Not gonna lie, I was disappointed that they removed the Dunkey Easter Egg, even if it wasn't that surprising to see it removed. I guess it's not too big of a deal though.

Because Dunky is very popular right now and made that video saying he would be coming for the Mania devs if they fucked the game up. He's also called it his most anticipated game of the year a couple of times.

Edit: I also wouldn't say he's the only youtube personality who gets shout outs, the Sonic Twitter seems deeply entrenched in fucking around with Egoraptor, for example.

The difference is that the Sonic twitter is a social media outlet where pretty much any internet reference is fair game, while Sonic Mania is an actual commercial game. The Dunkey reference can certainly have a place in a joke video on the Sonic twitter but not in an officially published Sonic game where a random soundbyte from some popular YouTube guy who isn't even well-known for his Sonic views doesn't make sense whatsoever
