My theory concerning the possibility of Classic Sonic being an illusion in Sonic Forces.

I've recently come up with a new theory which involves the exit of Classic Sonic from the Modern Sonic canon for good.

Infinite has been theorised to have the powers of illusion. With this in mind it could be possible that everything in Sonic Forces isn't actually real. See in the latest trailer we see Infinite fight the heroes with the other villains, but as I'm sure other's have already noted they occasionally have this glitchy flicker motion going on? The same glitchy flicking motion Infinite has. (When he's showering the atmosphere with those dark pink cube things.)

Not to mention Infinite's theme song. The lyrics are pretty telling.

(Cubes turn a dark red.)

When everything you know has come and gone

(You are at your lowest, I am rising higher)

Only scars remain of who I was

(We'll fight in the ashes, you will see the fire)

When there's no one left to carry on

(This is an illusion, open up your eyes and!)

This pain, persists, I can't resist cause that's what it takes to be Infinite!

So look around you and tell me what you really see

I never end and that's the difference in you and me

'Cause when your time is up and everything is falling down (The illusion?)

It's only me and you, who is going to save you now?

So look around you and tell me what you really see

You live a lie and that's the difference in you and me

I have the power, let me show you what it's all about

It's only me and you, who is going to save you now?

I'm starting to think the ending lyrics are addressed from Infinite to Classic Sonic and how he doesn't belong in the Modern Series.

Basically my theory is that Classic Sonic is as much as illusion as the returning villains are. Instead of him being from an another dimension, the twist is going to be that Infinite created this dimension and that killing him means the illusion around them disappears, including Classic Sonic. Classic Sonic will vanish, cease to be outside of the retro games.

Reason I think there's weight to this theory is how Eggman emphasises that Classic Sonic is supposedly from another dimension at the start of the game. I reckon this is the same dimension Infinite has created and reason to why Chaos and Zavok are seen to be still alive along with Metal Sonic and Shadow with Shadow being evil again.

Nakamura said something about Classic Sonic being an importance to this story and I think this may be what he's referring to. Cause interestingly enough he also reiterated how Classic Sonic is the only Classic Character in Sonic Forces, which by itself makes no sense. What Classic Sonic's firends are not going to try and contact him?

Of course though, if this is all true then they probably don't actually exist. Infinite knows this, it's the reason why he referred to Sonic as: 'Blue savior.'

Essentially the damage to the Modern Sonic canon thanks to Generations is being completely retconned, so that there's only just one real Sonic again.

I don't think late Sonic games writers could go that far, even if they wanted.

You never know.

This would be cool, but this is only the second time Classic is showing up, and it doesn't even seem to be the same Classic as the one in Generations, what with that one being from time travel and this one being from another dimension.

...Actually, it'd be kinda cool if this world is a different dimension instead of Classic's, and that's why Eggman was able to take over without Sonic stopping him until now, and why Classic's origins are apparently being retconned. I doubt it, but... Eh.

Edit: Wait, shit, I completely misread that. That would actually be a passable excuse for bringing these guys back, but it seems... unlikely. They don't seem very passionate about this, so that sort of twist... I dunno.

I'm pretty sure Generations may be getting retconned. (The game should have never been treated canon in the first place. What sense does it make if the classic iterationof Sonic, Tails and Eggman completely contradict their Modern iterations?)

Also, just to be more clear I'm saying that Classic Sonic's design is what is being retconned, Modern Sonic would have still had those adventures, but there will be just one now.

One Sonic.

Now as for Infinite, I've only just noticed this, but at 0:48

His eyes turn green for a few seconds?

Wonder who in particular has green eyes?

Either they're dropping clues or it's a red herring. Either way, certainly interesting to speculate until more information is given.

I agree that its very likely Classic Sonic is the result of some kind of connection to whatever power Infinite wields. With the prior knowledge that Classic is of an alternate dimension, as opposed to from the past, its likely that Infinite's powers are derived from an ability to manipulate timespace to suit his whims, which could come across as some form of illusion. Not in the literal sense, but a proverbial one. As in what is being presented is not what it seems.

However that would leave one gigantic elephant in the room, being Classic Sonic's alignment as a hero. If he was indeed an illusion or a manipulation of Infinite, then it would be baffling as to why he would team up with Modern Sonic. Surely if the big bad went through the trouble of bringing over another Sonic alongside the likes of Shadow, Chaos and Zavok, then he too should be batting for team Eggman. Classic Sonic in this regard is an outliner and an anomaly. If he is an illusion, then why isn't he working under the same loyalties as the other three?

But there is an interesting way around that. If we really want to put on our creative caps, and Sonic Team really wants to throw us a curveball, what if Classic Sonic is a villain in this game. The final member of Eggman's elite enforcers. He could spend the entire game fighting alongside Modern and the resistance, only to betray the lot once all the emeralds are inevitably collected. It would make sense. If he is an end product of Infinite's power, then he has no business being a good guy. If  Infinite can create "illusions" why would he create one that actively works against him. Classic Sonic is the ultimate sleeper cell. He's a trump card that can crush the resistance in the final hours. Much like Merlina, he steals the credibility established in a previous game (Gens) to really twist the knife.

Plus, you could get a heck of a final boss out of it. vs. Classic Super Sonic for all the marbles.

Its a theory I came up a while back. But its got some merit.

You could've easily just said he's a double-agent planted by Meph- I mean Infinite, but yeah that works :P
