It’s finally here! This week saw the beginning of Sonic 2’s release around the world, and we’re starting to hear how sales are doing. The first good news comes from France, where the film made $1,200,000 on the day of its release.
Now, this is fantastic news for a couple of reasons. One, that amount of money made Sonic 2 reach #1 at France’s box office. Two, and perhaps more impressive, is that the movie made 30% more money on its premiere day than Sonic 1 did on its premiere day a couple of years ago!
Now, it is worth noting that this is only the beginning. The film premiered in Australia and Germany yesterday. Today, Sonic 2 released in the UK and Spain. North America’s turn comes on April 8th.
This is actually not what was done with Sonic 1. Sonic 2 is opening in 31 markets via a slow rollout. Sonic 1, however, not only opened in 40 markets, but this all happened on the same February date.
What is different this time is the state of the pandemic. Sonic 1 had a lot of momentum, but the initial outbreak of the COVID pandemic resulted in an abrupt end to any further sales. Although the pandemic is still not over yet, Sonic 2 will not see the same fate that Sonic 1 did.
That all said, we’ll keep you up to date on any further sales numbers. To see Sonic 2 already showing signs of doing better than its predecessor, which is even more impressive when you consider that Sonic 1 was a massive success, is very encouraging. It’s uncertain whether this momentum will continue in France, and it is even more uncertain if the movie will see similar success in other regions. We’ll just have to wait and see.
