Sonic’s 30th Anniversary Under Way with New Games! European Licensing Magazine Confirms

With the world in a state of disarray during a pandemic and nary a drop of news regarding the next big Sonic game (for very understandable reasons), there may have been some concern among the community that there wouldn’t be much of a celebration for Sonic’s big 30th anniversary in 2021. Thankfully this isn’t the case after spotting an advert on a Licensing Magazine.

On the 90th page of the magazine, you can see the usual stats that a corporation would flaunt to entice other companies to license their IP (sales, revenue, etc), but the last bullet point (ring point?) mentions that in 2021, the 30th anniversary is still on it’s way.

A year of celebration – new games, digital content, events, major announcements and a tailored licensing programme

Rest assured that we will soon see new Sonic games in the coming months! An announcement is always a way to drum up some serious hype in the community, so stay tuned to the Sonic Stadium as more news releases. Stay safe!

  1. I’m really hoping the announcements will be Sonic Mania 2 & Sonic Adventure Remastered
Seeing as their splitting the franchise into two with Classic games and Modern games after the success of Mania.

But i am hearing Sonic Forces 2 was leaked on a Sega website by accident. true or false who knows.

    1. I get that strange feeling that Sega is going to release a pack which contains Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes. Who knows, Mario had one so maybe Sonic might have one as well.

      1. I prefer trilogy pack that contains, sonic adventure, sonic shuffle, and sonic adventure 2 remastered for now. In 2025 or 2030, I expected a remake with the original dreamcast designs for the games that I just mentioned.

  2. Here’s what I want for the Sonic 30th anniversary:
    Sonic Adventure 1&2 remakes
Sonic Colors and Lost World Switch ports.
    A Sonic Adventure-inspired game.

    1. I only see the first option as the most likely to happen (with the first Adventure game at the very least), the second is a strong maybe depending on how the contract with Nintendo will work out (and how Nintendo themselves will respond), and the third, very unlikely.

  3. I wrote this letter to SEGA.

As part of the Sonic 30th anniversary, want a new Sonic game with: Adventure-esque gameplay, playable characters, new characters including a new hedgehog like Shadow from Sonic Adventure 2 and Silver from Sonic 2006, current voice actors from Sonic Colors/Team Sonic Racing, better levels, Chaos Emeralds, several stories like Sonic Adventure and Sonic 2006, Chao Garden with all of the old animals from Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Black market and the colourful Chao eggs. All the characters I want is Sonic, Tails, Knuckes, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, Cream, the Chaotix, Silver, Blaze, Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic, Orbot and Cubot. And the characters I don’t want is Zavok, the rest of the deadly six and the wisps.

Trust me, it will be revealed at the possible Sonic Adventure Music online experience.

    1. @Scoot: No offense but if Sega truly cared about fan letters, something like this would have already happened a long, long time ago already. Just saying, I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you.

      1. I don’t know man, I think what Scott has written there is way too much to reasonably ask for and very non-specific. Does he want all of these characters to be playable or just as part of the story. What does he mean by adventure-esque gameplay; the first game, the second, 06, a mixture of the styles etc. How do the individual stories of roughly 16 characters intertwine without repeating the same story beats and what kind of tone is it supposed to be. More importantly, how do their gameplay styles or mechanics vary without being stale, dissonant and deviating from standard ‘a to b’ act completion gameplay.

I don’t think it’s that they don’t listen to or observe what we like as fans cause Shadow the Hedgehog’s resurrection and standalone game, Mania, Forces character/OC customisation and the return of adventure style structure of 06 wouldn’t have taken place otherwise. As well know, many of these were not well executed or things happened behind the scenes that stopped then from reaching their full potential but they were experiments in the line of what fans had been asking for at various points in time.

I agree with you on short though, I wouldn’t hold my breath on the publishers and developers listening to that.

  4. Cautiously optimistic at the moment but admittedly hyped up to see what they have to offer. It’s been weird not seeing much of the blue blur this year.

  5. Sonic Forces 2 is point blank not happening and I cannot believe people were foolish enough to believe that “leak” was real like are you kidding me???

Anyways, I’m extremely curious for whatever the hell they’re putting out for this anniversary. I don’t want ANOTHER celebration of the franchise because we’ve been there and done that and it’s getting old. I want new ideas, I want a new concept that shakes the franchise to its core. We probably won’t get that, but I just want something good. Something to be proud of. Something to brag about so I can parade around the internet and be like “Yep! That’s my boy!” because I’m sick and tired of Sonic being a laughing stock. We’re probably getting nothing of the sort and that makes me really sad.

      1. Ahaha thank you! I’m just real tired of getting absolutely nothing in the form of the recent 3D Mainline Sonic games and it infuriates me that they came up with the most streamlined and effective 3D formula that was perfected once Generations came out and then…threw everything people loved it out the window for gimmicks literally NO ONE asked for, trying to copy what worked for their competitor (Mario) without understanding why people like Mario games and then when they got the message that no one wanted it, they went back to what worked in the past but with no flavor to it. I could go on all day about this but yeah, I’m tired. I’m really tired.

    1. Tell me about it. Unfortunately, I don’t have much faith in them. Bad writing, retconing things into oblivion, everything that’s happened recently with the blur blur has just been… uggh.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see a new sonic mania game. THAT game actually had effort and love put into it, not just a sonic slapped onto it and rushed out to be sold. Remember when Sega actually cared about story, world building and gameplay? Ahh good times. Good times

  6. While there’s a real likely chance of at least one new game in 2021, we shouldn’t take that advert as gospel, especially right now when plans are frequently shifting. As a cautionary tale, let’s remember a similar advert in 2014 that promised a brand new game in 2015 for PS4/XB1/Wii U.

Regarding the “Sonic Forces 2” rumor, it was admitted by the person who posted it as a hoax.

  7. I’m looking forward to Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th Anniversary which is next year, and my favourite counterparts of Sonic are Classic, Modern and Boom.

  8. I think the 30th Anniversary Game might be a reboot, mainly due to Sonic Forces’ poor execution.

I bet they would make it a 3D retelling of Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3 & Knuckles but with more characters like Fang, Mighty, Ray, the Chaotix, Bean, Bark, Orbot and Cubot.

  9. We’re getting Sonic Forces 2, Sonic Jump DLC, Sonic Dash DLC, Chao Math Garden, Big teaches Phonics, Sonic vs Mario BINGO for the Amico, and Sonic Boom: Knuckles Emerald Hunt GO.

  10. All I want is a new Sonic game with a new and better formula, ideally one similar to the Adventure games but way more focused on physics and momentum and less scripted and linear.

For the sake of comparison I think a game with the same concept as the Sonic GT fan game would work, but obviously with tighter controls, longer stages, etc.

  11. I would like to see the somewhat rumored Sonic Adventure 1 remake, thats honestly enough for me.

After the 30th anniversary I would like to see a few mainline Sonic games here and there that are not being tied with the franchise’s anniversaries. Maybe its just me but it still seems like an anniversary of Sonic is the only time we get a mainline game nowadays.

  12. I don’t want anything close to a Sonic adventure, colors, heroes, unleashed, ect. remake.i don’t want anything close to a Sonic Mania sequel. I don’t want anything close to what’s commonly established as “3D” or even “2D” gameplay as we know it. I don’t want anything close to Boost gameplay. I want something new, fresh, fun, stylish, and innovative. Sega needs to stop looking at the past and think of actually intuitive gameplay that makes sense. But, they know that even horrible games like Sonic Forces sold well, so I think they likely won’t do anything extraordinary to ensure on great gameplay.

  13. For the upcoming 30th anniversary or after that for coming few years, I want the 14 playable characters to appear in a new 3D Sonic game; Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream & Cheese, Big & Froggy, Rouge, Shadow, Omega, Vector, Espio, Charmy, Blaze and Silver. All 14 heroes with their old, new and improved abilitiies on new adventures and epic battles against forces of evil including non-playable villain characters; Dr. Eggman, Orbot, Cubot, Metal Sonic and the Eggman Empire army. I would also like another villain Eggman Nega (mainly the arch-enemy of Blaze and Silver) to make a comeback along with his Metal Sonic 3.0 (last scene in Sonic Rivals 2) with his army and new creations similar to Eggman’s creations.
I would like to see the return of Vanilla the Rabbit ( Cream’s mum), Chocola the Chao (Cheese’s brother) and G-merl the Gizoid (the end of Sonic Advance 3, Tails reprogram G-merl to be a good Gizoid, living with Cream and her family) as the non-playable supporting characters to the playable heroes.
Plus, there are many that I want for the new Sonic game:
Current voice actors from Sonic Colours to Team Sonic Racing
    Better levels
The return of Human citizens (like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed)
The return of Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.) (like Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog)
Chao Garden with all of the animals (from early Sonic games and Sonic Lost World) and Chao (from Sonic Adventure 1 and 2)
    Chaos Emeralds and Sol Emeralds
World Map around the planet and Adventure field/hub (like Sonic Adventure and Sonic Unleashed)
    Several stories including most cutscenes

I wish that I would send the message or email to either SEGA or any behind the Sonic franchise of what to expect for the gaming storyline and the characters’ powers and abilities.
Also I would like to know about the events for Sonic 30th anniversary so I can get to go there either in the UK since I am living now, Japan, USA or anywhere in the world.

    1. @David Twi-Yeboah: Sorry to say but Sega and Sonic Team never take these kind of fan letters seriously.
@Scott: As Axis stated, the cast is big enough as it is. If there is gonna be a new hedgehog (or any new character(s) for that matter) it must be for something innovative in gameplay that hasn’t been done before (and also for good story purposes), not for the sake of just adding another hedgehog.

  14. Okay, we’ve seen how Mario does it, so we gotta go big…
More Sonic Adventure ports, bundled together with Shadow The Hedgehog. Genius. $60.
