Happy 29th Birthday, Sonic The Hedgehog!

It’s June 23rd, and you know what that means. Today marks the anniversary of Sonic’s first adventure. Of course, in the game’s canon, he remains a 15 year old. But Sonic 1 released 29 years ago on this date, which means Sonic, and even Dr. Eggman, are now 29 years old.

Unlike most birthdays, the road to Sonic’s 29th has been very quiet. For example, SEGA didn’t have their annual event at Tokyo Joypolis this year. But that doesn’t mean SEGA’s intending to keep it that way. They’re sending Sonic some happy birthday wishes on their official accounts.

And even though Tokyo Joypolis isn’t holding a Sonic birthday party this year, they still wished Sonic a happy birthday on Twitter. Meanwhile, Phantasy Star Online 2 has been holding their annual Sonic birthday event in the game, with players in North America being able to participate for the very first time.

Over in the west, Sonic’s birthday wasn’t forgotten either. SEGA Europe’s shop announced a special Twitter giveaway to celebrate the occasion. Jun Senoue and Johnny Gioeli of Crush 40 sent some birthday wishes of their own.

As for any potential Sonic news, we’ll just have to see what happens. It’s unlikely Sonic news will happen there, but SEGA’s preparing to showcase some games during the New Game+ event. Nevertheless, SEGA’s not going to let Sonic’s birthday come and go with a whisper. Expect them to keep the birthday tweets going. And you better believe the Sonic community will do the same.

Happy birthday, Sonic the Hedgehog!
