Got room on your shelf for a tiny voxel hedgehog? Kawada Australia currently lists five brand new Nanoblock sets scheduled for late June 2020, featuring tiny, blocky model kits for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Dr. Eggman, and Shadow.
Each set is described as coming with a baseplate and building instructions. Australian hobby store Frontline Hobbies lists each set as $19.99 AUD (translating to just under $13 UDS/11 GBP). No word on if these sets will launch outside of Australia.
The legacy of Sonic building block toys is short, but diverse. Erector released several sets based on the Sumo Digital racing games, and Sonic received a Level pack (with associated minifig and micro-builds) in 2015’s Lego Dimensions line. It also follows the Paladone Pixel Bricks series, which TSS reviewed in 2014.
Unlike similar interlocking brick toy lines, Nanoblocks are rather small, and focused on building display figurines, not articulated toys or playsets. Kadawa’s website touts the smallest bricks to be 4mm x 4mm x 5mm, putting them at roughly half the size of standard Lego bricks. As best can be estimated by the product photo, the Sonic figure measures about 11 bricks wide (4.4cm/1.7in) and 19 bricks tall (5.9cm/2.3in).
