Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of the few Hollywood success stories of 2020, breaking video game movie box office records and bringing in over $300 million before the coronavirus pandemic forced movie theaters worldwide to close. Despite this success, however, there are not currently plans for a sequel.
While talking with USA Today, director Jeff Fowler confirmed that there are no official talks or plans for a sequel. He did, of course, express interest, “nothing would bring me more happiness than getting another shot with these characters and to tell more stories. We’d love to do more with the Sonic cinematic universe.”
Fowler and other people involved in the film have expressed interest in exploring the various other characters and aspects of Sonic in future movies. Barring something unforeseen, those movies are likely to happen. According to Jeffrey Bock, a box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, Paramount Studios is desperate for new franchises, and will likely confirm a sequel “as soon as the world starts spinning in a direction we all recognize again.”
