  1. A brand new preview of Sonic Adventure DX has been published by Gamespot - along with a whole bunch of screenshots! - and with it some more details about the game has come to light, including new minigame modes and Chao raiding improvements lifted from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. The Mission Mode and minigame challenges will be where you'll get to unlock the many Game Gear bonus games included in the Gamecube port. According to the preview: Later in the preview, Gamespot talks about the Chao Gardens in Sonic Adventure DX and they have been vastly improved compared to the Dreamcast original. Some of the new features found in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle have been brought into this prequel release, making it familiar to anyone who is used to how Chao evolve in SA2. Overall, Gamespot thinks SADX is shaping up to be "relatively solid," although it had some concerns over the graphics that "are still a bit rough around the edges... at the moment, the game doesn't match the visual quality seen in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and it even falls a bit short of matching its Dreamcast cousin in some spots...the game's frame rate fluctuates a bit, which can be jarring." However, "judging from what we've seen so far, Sonic Adventure DX is poised to offer a relatively solid dose of retro gaming for those who are up for it." Read the rest of the preview on Gamespot's website - and check out the website's HUGE collection of screenshots captured from their playtest as well.
  2. Now's the time to put your money where your mouth is if you want to buy Sonic Adventure DX in the US. Gamestop is now taking pre-orders for the game. The retailer is running with a tentative release date of June 17th, which is a little more final than the 'Summer 2003' that we reported back in January. The game will cost $39.99 USD, and no doubt will have a similar price in other markets. Go ahead and pre-order the game on Gamestop's website here. via Sonic HQ
  3. Sonic Team and Sega have released information on some of their newest games to hit your consoles, that will be showcased at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (or E3). It marks Sonic's first appearance on a console other than a Nintendo one, and some tasty GameCube exclusives too. Take a look see... Sonic Heroes No screenshots have been released as of yet, but rumours are abound that, since Sonic Team are (allegedly) reluctant to ever make a 3D Sonic game again, that this will be a 2D action game for the blue blur. According to the press release, Sonic Heroes also marks Sonic's debut on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, which makes us a tad dubious, given the GameCube 'port over' treatment, without any exclusives for the majority of Sonic fans that actually bought Nintendo's console. Apparently however, like PSO, the GameCube version could be released well in advance of Microsoft and Sony's consoles. Sonic Adventure DX This one's a given really. You can catch the information in the Games Information Section. If you don't know yet, there'll be extra missions (meaning more emblems to collect), revitalised graphics and the whole Game Gear Sonic game catalogue. Sonic Team have done away with the overly-shiny graphics, which is great - let's hope the annoying camera converted from the Dreamcast version disappears sometime soon also. Phantasy Star Online Episode III: CARD Revolution A GameCube exclusive apparently, PSO returns for a third episode, only this time (a lot like the Game Boy Pokemon spin off game) you use playing cards for your offensive and defensive moves. It all sounds a lot like Lost Kingdoms really, and if it's not GameCube exclusive (meaning that Sonic Team may be able to implement a really cool link up with the GBA e-Reader by releasing a PSO Card Series), then this title really doesn't have much going for it. If it's on Xbox and PS2 as well for example, there's not much chance of an e-Reader link up happening, which can be the only appealing sounding part of this game. Nevertheless, we're intrigued. Naka-san hasn't done much wrong yet, so here's hoping... Judging by the only-released screen, the perspective of PSO Ep 3 seems to be turn-taking battling, harking back to classic Phantasy Star rather than free-style like every other PSO title to date. This can be either a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint really. Still. Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg Very very nice indeed. After a couple of years of useless (to us fans anyway) ports to GameCube, we were wondering when, if ever, Sonic Team would get their imaginitive form back from the days of the Sega Saturn. It looks like our prayers are answered, with Billy Hatcher - which seems like a cross between an all-new 3D platformer and a Skies of Arcadia style RPG. These are just assumptions on our part though. You raise monsters from hatching them out of eggs and go on some random quest to save the world. Possibly. It looks like Sonic Team are going to expand their patented A-Life system through this game, previously used on Sonic Adventures 1 & 2's Chao creatures and also in NiGHTS' NiGHTopians. After Sonic Adventure DX, you'll be seeing the good old Sonic Team as it once was, Saturn and Dreamcast-era. Sonic Battle Sonic Battle is a fighting game starring Sonic. Yes. Call me pedantic, but it does sound like Sonic Team are trying to gain from HAL's Super Smash Bros. achievements here. But meh. The game itself is in an isometric 3D style, which is quite strange for a fighting game - it looks like a free-roaming fighter, much in the same vein as Smash Bros, but using a points system (unless that's merely one of the game modes). The sprites are updated Sonic Advance ones, but we question the Shadow sprite to a certain extent. Never mind. Without a '2D' handheld manic fighter in sight, it looks like Sonic could fill the gap of a GBA Smash Bros. Melee. Sonic Pinball Party It seems like most of you have forgotten about this game already! Save for some newly-released screens, there's not a lot more to go by on the information front: it's the spiritual successor to Sonic Spinball for the Game Boy Advance, only this time Sonic takes a step back and is merely part of the background. This game calls for some serious pinball! 'Sabbuse'!
  4. Some new screenshots for Sonic Adventure DX have been released, and they focus on some of the game's memorable cutscenes and the new lighting effects that have been placed on the character models and environment. Take a look below! And since we're playing a bit of catch-up here, we're adding a bunch of other Sonic Adventure DX screenshots that were previously released that we didn't manage to cover before today. You can get a good idea of the upgraded models in these shots, compared to the Dreamcast original. Source: SEGA Press Site
  5. We already know what the Western cover art for Sonic Adventure DX is going to look like, but what about the Japanese version? Well, SEGA Japan has kindly answered this question for us, as it has recently added the packshot for the JP release of the Gamecube port. And as you can see... It really doesn't look too different from the US cover art, to be honest. Sometimes cover artwork for Sonic games vary wildly from region to region, but that isn't the case here. You can check out the SEGA Japan website to find the packshot there, as well as some screenshots and information. via Sonic HQ
  6. We've already had the Japanese release dates for Sonic Adventure DX, but everything's been quiet on the Western front until now. According to a retail listing on Electronics Boutique's website, the US launch date for the Gamecube port (+ Game Gear games) will be June 10th 2023. That's sooner than the Japanese release! And also very close to Sonic the Hedgehog's birthday, so consider this a nice little present for him why don't you? If you want to know what the box will look like so you can easily pluck it from the store shelves on release day, check out our news story about the cover art right here. Via Sonic HQ
  7. Lucky Japanese fans will get the chance to play the Sonic Adventure DX Gamecube port of SA1 ahead of its release, at SEGA's annual GameJam event (called GameJam Storm this year) that takes place this weekend. SEGA also announced that the expo, which is taking place at the Ariake Hall on April 4 and April 5, will also be broadcast live to a number of different SEGA-branded arcades across the country. Apparently the live broadcast will also be available across the internet, so make sure to tune in from home if you can! We're assuming that, because of the broadcast, there will be some SEGA news to come from the show, but beyond that there will be plenty of upcoming games for attendees to play, including Initial D : Special Stage, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution and Virtual-On: Marz on PlayStation 2 and Panzer Dragoon Orta on Xbox among others. 8. New Sonic the Hedgehog games are arriving (seemingly worldwide) in the Summer, but Japanese fans are the first to know when exactly those games will drop. Sonic Adventure DX on Gamecube will hit stores in June 2003, with the GBA's Sonic Pinball Party arriving the month after. Specifically, the Sonic Adventure port will be available from June 19th and will retail for ¥6,800. Sonic Pinball Party will come afterwards on July 17th, and sell for ¥4,800. No specific release dates have been announced by SEGA for the UK and US, but we know that we will also get them in the Summer, so no doubt they'll be available at around the same time. Via Swirlvision
  9. Following on from our recent story about Sonic Adventure DX effectively being a "Sonic Mega Collection 2", we have news of the full list of Game Gear Sonic games that will be included within the Gamecube disc. Read on... As you can see, there will be twelve Sonic GG games available to play. Many of these games will be familiar to 90s Sonic fans as they were released in the West, but a fair number of the titles on offer only ever launched in Japan. A good number of these games are extremely rare as well, which makes it a great thing that they're re-released on modern consoles. Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sonic & Tails (Sonic Chaos) Sonic & Tails 2 (Sonic Triple Trouble) Sonic Labyrinth Sonic Drift (originally released only in Japan) Sonic Drift 2 G-Sonic (Sonic Blast) Tails' Sky Patrol (originally released only in Japan) Tails' Adventure Sonic Spinball Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine Even more reason to look forward to this game's release. Sonic Adventure DX will be landing on Gamecubes in Japan and the West this summer. Source: Swirlvision
  10. SEGA recently revealed that it was returning to self-publishing its games in Europe, and ever since then we've been waiting eagerly for that day to come. The first title to be published by SEGA Europe will be Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II in May, followed closely by Sonic Adventure DX and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution in June. Since SEGA dropped out of the hardware market, Infogrames and THQ have been sharing duties in publishing certain SEGA titles in the West. While SEGA of America's office was still active, SEGA Europe ceased publishing operations entirely... until PSO I & II's release in May, that is. SEGA will open up offices in both London and Paris to manage the publishing duties across PAL territories. That means not just UK and France, but rest of Europe, Australia and New Zealand too. "Sega Europe is now in a position to get closer to the European games market, with its own publishing operation," SEGA Europe president Naoya Tsurumi said in a report on Gamespot. "The transition from hardware manufacturer to software publisher is now complete, and we see the next few years as an incredibly exciting time for growth for Sega Europe." Fitting for us that the first games to launch under the SEGA Europe label will be Sonic Team-developed titles. We can't wait!
  11. When we were wondering what kind of improvements Sonic Adventure DX would have over the original Dreamcast release, we couldn't have guessed this! According to Sonic Team's Yuji Naka, the upcoming Gamecube port will contain a 'Sonic Mega Collection 2' of every single Sonic game that released on the SEGA Game Gear in the 1990s. The news came as Naka-san was attending a special event for SEGA's B-Club online service. B-Club aims to be a virtual rental service, allowing players (in Japan only, we assume) to download games from classic consoles onto their PC. The service showcased titles from the SEGA Saturn and Mega CD, among others. Seemed like an appropriate place to casually announce that a slate of classic Sonic titles will end up on a Gamecube disc, then. According to N-philes, "Sonic Team's Yuji Naka, who has worked on games such as NiGHTS, says that Sonic Adventure DX for the GameCube will contain every Sonic Game Gear title (full versions). He jokingly commented that he was tempted to call it Sonic Mega Collection 2." Amazing! We can't wait to get our hands on a copy now. Sonic Adventure DX is set for a summer release on Nintendo Gamecube.
  12. We now have the official cover art for Sonic Adventure DX on Gamecube, and to our surprise the name of the game doesn't end with 'DX'. Behold its full name - Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut! You can see the box art, via N-Philes, below in full. It's the US version of the box, but we imagine the European and Japanese versions are likely to look similar if not the same. Stay tuned to The Sonic Stadium for all the latest news on Sonic Adventure DX (Director's Cut)!
  13. A new batch of screenshots for Sonic Adventure DX on Gamecube have been seen in the wild, and they properly showcase just how much extra shine Sonic Team were able to give the blue blur and friends on Nintendo's home console. The new screenshots, seen above, were found on Gamecube fansite Planet Gamecube, and are a much higher resolution than the initial set of screenshots that we published earlier. You can see Sonic running through Speed Highway, Amy navigating Twinkle Park and Knuckles climbing around Red Mountain. Planet Gamecube were also able to collect some high-resolution version screenshots of the first batch of images we had for Sonic Adventure DX, too. We've included them here so you can see E-102 Gamma, Tails, Big and Knuckles again in better quality. More news on Sonic Adventure DX as we get it!
  14. Shortly after confirming a Spring release for Sonic Advance 2, SEGA of America has issued a new press release announcing that Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Pinball Party are set for a Summer 2003 launch in North America. These dates match up with SEGA's already-announced releases for these games in Japan, hinting that Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Pinball Party could launch at the same time globally. Or at least, close enough that we don't get any spoilers ruined for us in the West. We're still waiting on Sonic Advance 2, SEGA... Check out the press release in full below. Source: SEGA
  15. There usually comes a problem within the video game industry. Those little things called 'ports' that the Nintendo Gamecube seems to have too many of these days. It wouldn't be half as bad if the developers actually made any decent overhauls - take an example like 007 NightFire. Now, the Gamecube version seemed to have the same graphics as the PS2 version, when in reality the GC could have easily had the same performance as Xbox. A shame, that. Even Sonic Team went under the 'problematic port' belt for a while, what with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and all, which wasn't the best of games to port, and wasn't the best of ports either. So, naturally, when Sonic Team announced a port of Sonic Adventure 1... well, the world went silent. Even on the Sonic Stadium Message Board, members were betting on how immensely crap this port was going to be, and that ST would put no effort in whatsoever. Boy, were we slapped in the face when we came across these - the first official shots of what is now dubbed "Sonic Adventure DX". Go on, take a look. It's a completely different world to what we knew on the Sega Dreamcast - and quite frankly, the DC graphics is what we were all expecting from the magic hands of Yuji Naka and co. If you haven't already noticed what these screens above are levels of, here's a quick recap: Screen 1 - Speed Highway, Jim, but not as you know it. Screen 2 - Twinkle Park as Amy Screen 3 - Red Mountain as Knuckles Screen 4 - Windy Valley as Tails Screen 5 - Emerald Coast as Big Screen 6 - Windy Valley as Gamma Admittedly, at this stage, Sonic seems the most improved (remember his look in the DC version?), and at present the other characters and levels only seem to have improved textures and smoother edges. But it still looks much more accomplished than the Dreamcast version already - a classic game that seems virtually unplayable today due to the amount of bugs and glitches. According to the Sega Website, there doesn't seem to be much added in the line of gameplay - it mentions the graphics are improved to utilise the Gamecube hardware, and then rabbits on about all the features that we knew and loved from 1999's game. But, as we know from Sonic Team now, they're less than willing to spill anything about gameplay until E3 at the earliest. So what should we expect to be added? Well, the many glitches in the original Sonic Adventure didn't do much to the fun factor - so the de-bugging of the game is pretty much a given, otherwise lynch mobs would be the order of the day at Sonic Team HQ. It would also be really good to make Big's levels just that little bit less tedious - the change of pace for Sonic players pretty much put them off the game outright. Oh, and Amy has to be more controllable than the Dreamcast game... slow that she is. At the moment, except for the graphics, everything (officially) is exactly the same Sonic Adventure 1 that we know and love. But, with any luck, Sonic Team might just add a few extras. Some bonus levels, perhaps? Or maybe a 2-Player mode, now that SA1 succeeds (rather than proceeds) Sonic Adventure 2? And nothing has been mentioned of the Chao yet. Well, we know that they are a definite inclusion - copies of Sonic Pinball Party will link with both SADX and SA2B. But maybe there is scope for a more controlled Chao Garden, with added bonus features? It could happen. Keep your eye on this space for more details.
  16. The first Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Pinball Party screens have been released, courtesy of Sega Japan! Take a look at the selection of images in this post, as well as some detail on these recently-announced titles. Sonic Pinball Party Sonic Pinball Party is not like Sonic Spinball for those who thought so. Think of it like an advanced version of the pinball in Sonic Adventure. Each Sonic character and co will have their own board in 3D realistic pinball style, with a real ball with real physics, and the characteristics of each character on the pinball table will be reflected somehow into gameplay, it would seem. There'll be different boards to choose from and subjects, like different NiGHTS into dreams boards and Samba De Amigo. The Samba board features an option where applying "the ball to the bumper" will play different Sonic Team music - from games like PSO and Burning Rangers. You can also play with four friends using 1 GBA cart, you can play "Party Mode". Sonic Adventure DX There aren't much changes known on this Gamecube Port of the Dreamcast original, but it'll feature much better graphics as you can see - utilizing the Gamecube power! You can learn more about both Sonic Pinball Party and Sonic Adventure DX, as well as the full selection of screenshots, in our TSS Previews for each game. 17. SEGA has officially revealed the name for its previously-announced Sonic Adventure remake for the Nintendo Gamecube. 'Sonic Adventure DX' will release on the console later this year. But the company also announced that a new Game Boy Advance spinoff, Sonic Pinball Party, will also release in 2003. According to a report by Nintendophiles, Sonic Adventure DX "should have the same type of changes that we saw for Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. While it is being called a port by SEGA, it should include many additions and changes." Not much else was revealed for the Sonic Pinball Party game, but judging by the name we would hazard a guess that it involves pinball in some way. Could it be a sequel to the Mega Drive platformer-pinball crossover, Sonic Spinball? Both Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Pinball Party are slated for Summer 2003 releases in Japan, meaning that Western launches can't be too far behind them. Bearing in mind that Sonic Advance 2 has yet to release in the West, and Sonic Team has already revealed the next Sonic game's unveiling at E3 in May, and you have a jam-packed year for Sonic ahead! 22. You can check out the SEGA Japan website to find the packshot there, as well as some screenshots and information. via Sonic HQ View full story
  23. View full story
